Abstract

A video map comprising a first plurality of segment definitions defining video segments within a video, the defining being responsive to at least one presentation of the video less in length than the length of the video; a first segment definition that defines a first video segment within the video and is associated with an actual identity of a locale depicted within the first video segment, the actual identity of the locale being different than a locale identity as represented in the video; a second segment definition that defines a second video segment within the video and is associated with an identification of a cinematic technique depicted within the second video segment; and a third segment definition that defines a third video segment within the video and is associated with an explanation of a depiction within the third video segment.

Claims

1. A method comprising the steps of:

retrieving a video map comprising (a) a first plurality of segment definitions defining video segments within a video, the defining being responsive to at least one presentation of the video less in length than the length of the video; and

(b) a second plurality of segment definitions, each of the segment definitions being associated with plot explanation for a plot point depicted within the video;

enabling a user to establish (a) a preference for a presentation that focuses on the plot points of the video, and (b) a plot explanation preference;

automatically selecting, responsive to the presentation preference and the first plurality of segment definitions, video segments from within the video;

playing the selected video segments as a video presentation;

monitoring a play location within the video presentation;

searching the second plurality of segment definitions to identify a segment definition that is responsive to the play location and the plot explanation preference;

providing, responsive to the identification of a responsive segment definition, an indication that plot explanation is available;

receiving, from the user, a request for plot explanation; and

providing, responsive to the request, the available plot explanation.

2. The method of claim 1 wherein each of the segment definitions is further associated with additional plot explanation;

and wherein the method further comprises the steps of;

receiving from the user a request for additional plot explanation; and

providing the additional plot explanation.

3. The method of claim 1 wherein each of the segment definitions is further associated with descriptors responsive to a plot point;

and wherein the method further comprises the steps of;

keyword searching the plurality of segment definitions; and

selectively playing, responsive to the keyword searching, a plurality of video segments.

4. The method of claim 1 further comprising the steps of:

receiving, from the user, a request for additional plot explanation; and

playing, responsive to user request, a plurality of video segments from within the video.

5. The method of claim 1 wherein the plot explanation is a video presentation.

6. The method of claim 1 further comprising the step of pausing, responsive to the request for plot explanation, the playing of the video presentation.

7. A method comprising the steps of:

retrieving a video map comprising (a) a first plurality of segment definitions defining video segments within a video, the defining being responsive to at least one presentation of the video less in length than the length of the video; and

(b) a second plurality of segment definitions, each of the segment definitions being associated with item information for an item depicted within the video;

enabling a user to establish a presentation preference and a function preference;

automatically selecting, responsive to the presentation preference and the first plurality of segment definitions, video segments from within the video;

playing the selected video segments as a video presentation;

monitoring a play location within the video presentation;

searching the second plurality of segment definitions to identify a segment definition that is responsive to the play location and the function preference;

providing, responsive to the identification of a responsive segment definition, an indication that item information is available;

receiving, from the user, a request for item information; and

providing, responsive to the request, the available item information.

8. The method of claim 7 wherein each of the segment definitions is further associated with additional information;

and wherein the method further comprises the steps of;

receiving from the user a request for additional information; and

providing the additional information.

9. The method of claim 7 wherein each of the segment definitions is further associated with descriptors;

and wherein the method further comprises the steps of;

keyword searching the plurality of segment definitions; and

selectively playing, responsive to the keyword searching, a plurality of video segments.

10. The method of claim 7 further comprising the steps of:

receiving, from the user, a request for additional item information; and

playing, responsive to user request, a plurality of video segments from within the video.

11. The method of claim 7 wherein the presentation of the video less in length than the length of the video is responsive to a content preference of the user.

12. The method of claim 7 wherein the item information is an identification of a cinematic technique;

and wherein the item depicted within the video is a depiction of a cinematic technique.

13. The method of claim 7 wherein the item information is an identification of an actual identity of a locale, the actual identity of the locale being different than a locale identity as represented in the video;

and wherein the item depicted within the video is a depiction of a locale.

14. A method comprising the steps of:

retrieving a video map comprising (a) a first plurality of segment definitions defining video segments within a video, the defining being responsive to at least one presentation of the video less in length than the length of the video; and

(b) a second plurality of segment definitions, each of the segment definitions being associated with item information for an item depicted within the video;

enabling a user to establish a presentation preference and a function preference;

automatically selecting, responsive to the presentation preference and the first plurality of segment definitions, video segments from within the video;

playing the selected video segments as a video presentation;

receiving from the user, during a playing of the video presentation, a request for item information;

identifying, responsive to the request, a location in the video presentation;

selecting, from the second plurality of segment definitions, a segment definition that is responsive to the identified location; and

providing, responsive to the selected segment definition, item information.

15. The method of claim 14 wherein each of the segment definitions is further associated with additional information;

and wherein the method further comprises the steps of;

receiving from the user a request for additional information; and

providing the additional information.

16. The method of claim 14 wherein each of the segment definitions is further associated with descriptors;

and wherein the method further comprises the steps of;

keyword searching the plurality of segment definitions; and

selectively playing, responsive to the keyword searching, a plurality of video segments.

17. The method of claim 14 further comprising the steps of:

receiving, from the user, a request for additional item information; and

playing, responsive to user request, a plurality of video segments from within the video.

18. The method of claim 14 wherein the presentation of the video less in length than the length of the video is responsive to a content preference of the user.

19. The method of claim 14 wherein the item information is an identification of a cinematic technique;

and wherein the item depicted within the video is a depiction of a cinematic technique.

20. The method of claim 14 wherein the item information is an identification of an actual identity of a locale, the actual identity of the locale being different than a locale identity as represented in the video;

and wherein the item depicted within the video is a depiction of a locale.
