Abstract

A method of providing navigation instructions in a locked mode of a device is disclosed. The method, while the display screen of the device is turned off, determines that the device is near a navigation point. The method turns on the display screen and provides navigation instructions. In some embodiments, the method identifies the ambient light level around the device and turns on the display at brightness level determined by the identified ambient light level. The method turns off the display after the navigation point is passed.

Claims

1. A system for providing navigation directions, the system comprising:

a navigation application for generating navigation instructions running on a device;

an electronic display of the device that displays directions when the device is near a turn location while in a locked view and turns the electronic display off when the device is past a turn location while in the locked view.

2. The system of claim 1 further comprising a control for locking the device.

3. The system of claim 1, wherein being near a turn location comprises being within a threshold distance before the turn location.

4. The system of claim 3, wherein being past a turn location comprises being within outside a threshold time after a turn location has been passed.

5. The system of claim 1, wherein the electronic display, upon receiving a text message event, turns on and displays a notification display object even when not near a turn location.

6. The system of claim 5, wherein the device places the text message in a storage location and displays a message access control in the electronic display.

7. The system of claim 6, wherein upon the message access control being applied, the device displays the text message on the electronic display.

8. The system of claim 7, wherein after the text message is displayed and the device is placed back in lock mode, the device no longer displays the text message access control.

9. The system of claim 1, further comprising an unlocking control that unlocks the device into the navigation application despite a different application being open in a foreground of the device before the device was locked.

10. A method of providing navigation instructions in a locked mode of a device, the method comprising:

while a display screen of the device is turned off, determining that the device is near a navigation point;

identifying an ambient light level around the device;

turning on the display screen at a brightness level determined by the identified ambient light level.

11. The method of claim 10 further comprising, after determining that the device is near a navigation point and before identifying the ambient light level, activating an ambient light level sensor.

12. The method of claim 10 further comprising, after turning on the display screen, displaying a set of decreasing distances as the device approaches the navigation point.

13. The method of claim 12 further comprising, after the navigation point is passed, displaying a next navigation instruction then turning off the display.

14. A method of displaying messages in a locked mode of a device, the method comprising:

turning on a display of the device;

displaying a message notification;

displaying a message access control;

receiving a selection of the message access control;

displaying the message.

15. The method of claim 14, wherein said selection of the message access control is received without first unlocking the device.

16. The method of claim 14, wherein the message notification is a first message notification and the message is a first message, the method further comprising displaying a second message notification before receiving a selection of the message access control and displaying both the first message and the second message after receiving the selection of the message access control.

17. The method of claim 14 further comprising, after displaying the message, receiving a command to stop displaying the message and removing the message access control.

18. A non-transitory computer readable medium storing a program which when executed by at least one processing unit provides navigation instructions in a locked mode of a device, the program comprising sets of instructions for:

while a display screen of the device is turned off, determining that the device is near a navigation point;

identifying an ambient light level around the device;

turning on the display screen at a brightness level determined by the identified ambient light level.

19. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 18, the program further comprising sets of instructions for, after determining that the device is near a navigation point and before identifying the ambient light level, activating an ambient light level sensor.

20. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 18, the program further comprising sets of instructions for, after turning on the display screen, displaying a set of decreasing distances as the device approaches the navigation point.

21. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 20, the program further comprising sets of instructions for, after the navigation point is passed, displaying a next navigation instruction then turning off the display.

22. A non-transitory computer readable medium storing a program which when executed by at least one processing unit displays messages in a locked mode of a device, the program comprising sets of instructions for:

turning on a display of the device;

displaying a message notification;

displaying a message access control;

receiving a selection of the message access control;

displaying the message.

23. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 22, wherein said selection of the message access control is received without first unlocking the device.

24. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 22, wherein the message notification is a first message notification and the message is a first message, the program further comprising sets of instructions for displaying a second message notification before receiving a selection of the message access control and displaying both the first message and the second message after receiving the selection of the message access control.

25. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 22, the program further comprising sets of instructions for:

after displaying the message, receiving a command to stop displaying the message; and

removing the message access control.
