SYSTEM AND METHOD FOR HANDSET OPERATION IN A WIRELESS COMMUNICATION NETWORK

1. A method for the control of a plurality of wireless communication devices in a short-range wireless communication network using an application programming interface (API) wherein each of the plurality of wireless communication devices includes a short-range transceiver, the method comprising:
- authenticating one of the plurality of wireless communication devices associated with a user via one or more of a plurality of access points associated with a venue;
upon authentication of the wireless communication device, establishing a communication link between one or more of the plurality of access points and the authenticated wireless communication device;
receiving user data for the user of the authenticated wireless communication device; and
sending targeted advertising data to the authenticated wireless communication device from one or more of the access points via the communication link, the targeted advertising data being dependent on the received user data, wherein the API is configured to automatically process the advertising data and to display the advertising data on a display of the authenticated wireless communication device without further intervention by the user.

Abstract
An application programming Interface (API) is downloaded to wireless user equipment (UE). The API enables the UE to automatically detect the presence of one or more access points (AP) in a venue and to transmit identification information to the access point to authenticate the UE. The identification/authentication may occur whenever the UE comes within range of any of the APs in the venue. A plurality of venues may be coupled to a Cloud network with the authentication information stored on the Cloud network. In this manner, whenever the UE enters any of the venues, the
UE is automatically authenticated when it comes within range of any AP within any of the venues. The venue may use the API to provide advertising to the UE. The Cloud network may aggregate data from a plurality of data sources to provide targeted advertising via the API to the UE.

the API causing the wireless communication device to automatically search for an access point using the short-range transceiver; automatically transmitting an authentication request to a detected access point, the authentication request including identification data associated with the wireless communication device; upon authentication of the authenticated wireless communication device, automatically establishing a communication link with the access point; automatically transmitting a signal from the authenticated wireless communication device to the access point using the short-range transceiver so long as the communication link with the access point is still established, the signal comprising user data; receiving targeted advertising data from the access point that is dependent on the user data; and automatically processing the targeted advertising data and displaying the targeted advertising data on a display of the authenticated wireless communication device without further intervention by the user. - View Dependent Claims (18, 19, 20)

an authentication server configured to receive an authentication request from a wireless communication device and, in response to the authentication request, to verify an identity of the wireless communication device based on authentication data contained in the authentication request; a plurality of wireless access points associated with a first venue, the authentication server being configured to establish a communication link between the authenticated wireless communication device and one or more of the plurality of wireless access points such that the communication link is maintained so long as the authenticated wireless communication device is within range of at least one of the plurality of wireless access points; a subscriber management data storage module configured to store user data for a user of the authenticated wireless communication device; a database server configured to receive user data from the subscriber management data storage module, to receive user data from a data storage of the authenticated wireless communication device, and to receive user data from a infrastructure network data storage module associated with the plurality of wireless access points, the database server further configured to cause the aggregated user data to be analyzed by a data analytics module to determine one or more user characteristics of the user, to select targeted advertising data based on the determined one or more user characteristics, and to deliver targeted advertising data to the authenticated wireless communication device via the communication link. - View Dependent Claims (29, 30, 31, 32, 33, 34, 35)
