Abstract

An in-place information management system having a management application built on a common data model and configured for asynchronous query-based application of policies on content stored in the disparate data storage systems through a query interface which may be part of a set of integration services. The common data model may be configured based on common architectures of the disparate data storage systems. The query interface may be configured for running a query on a data storage system in response to a search request received by the management application from a records manager and for mapping semantically equalivant keys from disparate data storage systems to a key in the common data model. The query may define a set of records to be treated similarly according to corporate policy on content lifecycle and records compliance.

Claims

1. A system, comprising:

a server computer connected to disparate data storage systems over a network;

a management application running on the server computer and configured for asynchronous query-based application of policies on content stored in the disparate data storage systems;

a common data model utilized by the management application, the common data model configured based on common architectures of the disparate data storage systems including at least a content server; and

a query interface configured for running a query on the content server in response to a search request received by the management application from a records manager having access to the management application, wherein the content server identifies a set of records that match the query and returns identification information corresponding to the set of records to the query interface, wherein the query interface is further configured for translating the identification information corresponding to the set of records into a translated format utilizing the common data model, and wherein the management application is further configured for returning the identification information corresponding to the set of records in the translated format to the records manager.

2. The system of claim 1, wherein the management application enables the records manager to define at least one policy that is effective across all the content stored in the disparate data storage systems.

The system of claim 2, wherein the at least one policy effective across all the content does not interfere with at least one local records management policy specific to one of the disparate data storage systems, the local records management policy defined using an application other than the management application.

4. The system of claim 1, wherein the management application is further configured for lifecycle control, in-place records management, or a combination thereof, over the content stored in the disparate data storage systems.

5. The system of claim 1, wherein the management application is further configured for placing an in-place hold on the set of records.

6. The system of claim 1, further comprising a controlled repository communicatively connected to the server computer, wherein the management application is further configured for moving data from any of the disparate data storage systems to the controlled repository.

7. The system of claim 1, further comprising a controlled repository communicatively connected to the server computer, wherein the management application is further configured for certifiable records management over records stored in the controlled repository.

8. The system of claim 1, further comprising a hold repository communicatively connected to the server computer, wherein the content server does not support in-place holds, and wherein the management application is further configured for copying the set of records into the hold repository in accordance with a policy set by the records manager.

9. The system of claim 1, wherein the server computer and at least one of the disparate data storage systems are independently controlled.

10. A method, comprising:

receiving, by a management application running on a server computer, a search request from a records manager having access to the management application, wherein the management application utilizes a common data model and configured for asynchronous query-based application of policies on content stored in disparate data storage systems connected to the server computer over a network, the common data model configured based on common architectures of the disparate data storage systems;

communicating, by a query interface executing on the server computer, a query to a content server in response to the search request, wherein the content server is one of the disparate data storage systems, and wherein the content server identifies a set of records that match the query and returns identification information corresponding to the set of records to the query interface;

translating, by the query interface, the identification information corresponding to the set of records into a translated format utilizing the common data model; and

returning, by the management application, the identification information corresponding the set of records in the translated format to the records manager.

11. The method according to claim 10, further comprising:

providing authorized user access to the set of records in a multi-state review process.

12. The method according to claim 10, further comprising:

enabling the records manager to define at least one policy that is effective across all the content stored in the disparate data storage systems.

13. The method according to claim 12, wherein the at least one policy effective across all the content does not interfere with at least one local records management policy specific to one of the disparate data storage systems, the local records management policy defined using an application other than the management application.

14. The method according to claim 10, further comprising:

performing lifecycle control, in-place records management, or a combination thereof, over the content stored in the disparate data storage systems.

15. The method according to claim 10, further comprising:

placing an in-place hold on the set of records.

16. The method according to claim 10, further comprising:

moving data from any of the disparate data storage systems to a controlled repository communicatively connected to the server computer; and

providing certifiable records management over records stored in the controlled repository.

17. The method according to claim 10, further comprising:

copying the set of records into a hold repository communicatively connected to the server computer in accordance with a policy set by the records manager.

18. A computer program product comprising at least one non-transitory computer readable medium storing instructions translatable by a server computer to implement a system having:

a management application configured for asynchronous query-based application of policies on content stored in disparate data storage systems connected to the server computer over a network;

a common data model utilized by the management application, the common data model configured based on common architectures of the disparate data storage systems including at least a content server; and

a query interface configured for running a query on the content server in response to a search request received by the management application from a records manager having access to the management application, wherein the content server identifies a set of records that match the query and returns identification information corresponding to the set of records to the query interface, wherein the query interface is further configured for translating the identification information corresponding to the set of records into a translated format utilizing the common data model, and wherein the management application is further configured for returning the identification information corresponding to the set of records in the translated format to the records manager.

19. The computer program product of claim 18, wherein the instructions are further translatable by the server computer to provide authorized user access to the set of records in a multi-state review process.

20. The computer program product of claim 18, wherein the instructions are further translatable by the server computer to enable the records manager to define at least one policy that is effective across all the content stored in the disparate data storage systems.

21. The computer program product of claim 20, wherein the at least one policy effective across all the content does not interfere with at least one local records management policy specific to one of the disparate data storage systems, the local records management policy defined using an application other than the management application.

22. The computer program product of claim 18, wherein the instructions are further translatable by the server computer to perform lifecycle control, in-place records management, or a combination thereof, over the content stored in the disparate data storage systems.

23. The computer program product of claim 18, wherein the instructions are further translatable by the server computer to place an in-place hold on the set of records.

24. The computer program product of claim 18, wherein the instructions are further translatable by the server computer to:

move data from any of the disparate data storage systems to a controlled repository communicatively connected to the server computer; and

provide certifiable records management over records stored in the controlled repository.

25. The computer program product of claim 18, wherein the instructions are further translatable by the server computer to copy the set of records into a hold repository communicatively connected to the server computer in accordance with a policy set by the records manager.
