Abstract

The present invention includes a healthcare system for capturing and maintaining patient healthcare records and employing information in the records to proactively alert hospital workers to a condition that places patient health at risk.

Claims

1. A notification system comprising:

a patient support having a configuration;

a patient support monitoring system;

a patient'"'"'s condition or risk factor(s) stored in said patient support monitoring system; and

said patient support monitoring system configured to detect and monitor when the patient support'"'"'s configuration is unsuitable for a given patient based on the patient'"'"'s condition or risk factor(s) and to generate a notification of an unsatisfactory configuration when the patient support'"'"'s configuration is unsuitable for a given patient based on the patient'"'"'s condition or risk factor(s).

2. The notification system according to claim 1, wherein the patient'"'"'s condition or risk factor is determined or selected by a person and then entered or selected as the patient'"'"'s condition or risk factor in said patient support monitoring system for the given patient.

The notification system according to claim 1, wherein the patient'"'"'s condition or risk factor is determined or selected by a person and then entered or selected as the patient'"'"'s condition or risk factor in said patient support monitoring system for the given patient remotely from the patient support.

4. The notification system according to claim 1, wherein, based on the designated condition or risk factor for the patient, the patient support monitoring system automatically selecting or determining a set of appropriate patient support configurations and/or criteria for the given patient.

5. The notification system according to claim 1, wherein, the patient support monitoring system is operable to receive the set of appropriate patient support configurations and/or criteria entered therein.

6. The notification system according to claim 3, wherein said set of appropriate patient support configurations and/or criteria includes one or more of the group consisting of side rails up, bed exit alarmed, maximum head of bed angle, and patient movement.

7. The notification system according to claim 1, wherein the patient support monitoring system includes a network interface and one or more sensors in communication with the network interface for detecting the actual configuration and/or criteria of the patient support.

8. The notification system according to claim 7, wherein the network interface is in communication with a hospital network and/or nurse call station.

The notification system according to claim 8, wherein the hospital network and/or nurse call station receives the status or signals of the sensor(s) from the network and compares the status or signals to the appropriate patient support configurations and/or criteria to determine if the actual patient support configurations and/or criteria deviate from the appropriate patient support configurations and/or criteria.

The notification system according to claim 1, wherein when the patient support monitoring system determines that the actual patient support configurations and/or criteria of the patient support deviate from the appropriate patient support configurations and/or criteria, the patient support monitoring system generates a notification or report of an unsatisfactory configuration at the patient support.

11. The notification system according to claim 8, wherein the notification generates a pop-up display at the nurse call station or documentation for storage.

12. The notification system according to claim 1, wherein a notification level may be selected.

13. The notification system according to claim 1, wherein the notification system is operable to receive input from a user, such as a caregiver, designating a level of priority, such as a high, a moderate, or a low priority level.

14. A notification system comprising:

a patient support having a configuration;

a patient support monitoring system;

a patient'"'"'s condition or risk factor(s) accessible by said patient support monitoring system; and

said patient support monitoring system configured to detect and monitor when the patient support'"'"'s configuration is unsuitable for a given patient based on the patient'"'"'s condition or risk factor(s) and to generate a notification of an unsatisfactory configuration when the patient support'"'"'s configuration is unsuitable for a given patient based on the patient'"'"'s condition or risk factor(s).

15. The notification system method according to claim 14, wherein said patient'"'"'s condition or risk factor(s) is stored in said patient support monitoring system.

16. The notification system according to claim 14, wherein the patient support monitoring system comprises a system remote from said patient support.

17. The notification system according to claim 16, wherein the patient support monitoring system comprises a network interface, said network in communication with one or more sensors at said patient support for detecting the actual configuration and/or criteria of the patient support.

18. The notification system according to claim 17, wherein the network interface is in communication with a hospital network and/or nurse call station.

19. A method of notifying relative to a patient support having a configuration, said method comprising:

monitoring the patient support'"'"'s configuration;

comparing the patient support'"'"'s configuration to a patient'"'"'s condition or risk factor(s); and

generating a notification of an unsatisfactory configuration when the patient support'"'"'s configuration is unsuitable for a given patient based on the patient'"'"'s condition or risk factor(s).

20. The method of notifying according to claim 19, further comprising generating a notification of a satisfactory configuration when the patient support'"'"'s configuration is suitable for a given patient based on the patient'"'"'s condition or risk factor(s).

21. The method of notifying according to claim 19, further comprising storing patient'"'"'s condition or risk factor(s) in a patient monitoring system at the patient support.

22. The notification system according to claim 19, wherein said monitoring includes remote monitoring.

23. The notification system according to claim 19, further comprising entering or selecting the patient'"'"'s condition or risk factor.

24. The notification system according to claim 19, further comprising automatically selecting or determining a set of appropriate patient support configurations and/or criteria for a given patient.

25. The notification system according to claim 19, wherein said monitoring includes monitoring one or more activities at or components of the patient support consisting of side rails up, bed exit alarmed, maximum head of bed angle, and patient movement.
