1. A computer based method for characterizing the energy use of multiple different building massing configurations, the method comprising:
- specifying a set of parameters for a building massing configuration;
calculating a normalized energy use index for multiple different building massing configurations that meet the specified set of parameters, wherein the normalized energy use index for each of the multiple different building massing configurations is normalized against a reference energy use index of a reference building;
ranking the multiple different building massing configurations by the respective normalized energy use indexes; and
selecting at least one of the different massing configurations for display on a graphical user interface according to the ranking.

Computer based methods and systems for characterizing the energy use of multiple different building massing configurations are disclosed. In one embodiment, a computer based method involves specifying a set of parameters for a building massing configuration, calculating a normalized energy use index for multiple different building massing configurations that meet the specified set of parameters, wherein the normalized energy use index for each of the multiple different building massing configurations is normalized against a reference energy use index of a reference building, ranking the multiple different building massing configurations by the respective normalized energy use indexes, and selecting at least one of the different massing configurations for display on a graphical user interface according to the ranking.

26. A computer based method for realizing a building system, the method comprising:

receiving input related to customer needs for a building system, the input being received through a user interface at a remote client device and being expressed in a formal description language; generating multiple different business models from the customer needs input, wherein the business models define, in a functional language, types and volumes of services that will be provided within the building system to satisfy the customer needs; generating multiple different spatial arrangements from at least one of the business models, wherein the spatial arrangements define a form and shell of the building system, a block and stack of the building system, and room locations within the building system; generating multiple different systems integration designs from at least one of the spatial arrangements, wherein the systems integration designs define three dimensional spaces of infrastructure of the building system; tracking dependencies between the customer needs, the business models, the spatial arrangements, and the systems integration designs; wherein generating multiple different spatial arrangements comprises; identifying, from at least one of the business models, a set of parameters for a building form and shell, the set of parameters defining multiple different building massing configurations; calculating, using pre-defined normalized energy use index formulas, a normalized energy use index for the multiple different building massing configurations, wherein the normalized energy use index for each of the multiple different building massing configurations is normalized against a reference energy use index of a reference building; ranking the multiple different building massing configurations by the respective normalized energy use indexes; and selecting at least one of the different building massing configurations for display on a graphical user interface according to the ranking. - View Dependent Claims (27)

establishing a reference energy use index by running an energy simulation based on building massing configuration parameters of a reference building; establishing a set of configuration parameters for each of multiple different building footprint shapes; running an energy simulation for each of multiple different building massing configurations that meet the set of configuration parameters to produce energy use indexes for the multiple different building massing configurations; calculating a normalized energy use index for each different massing configuration from the energy use indexes for the multiple different building massing configurations and from the reference energy use index; and deriving shape-specific normalized energy use index formulas for each of the multiple different building footprint shapes from the normalized energy use indexes. - View Dependent Claims (34, 35, 36, 37, 38)
