Abstract

Methods, systems, and computer-executable instructions for automatically processing promotion redemptions are provided. An exemplary method includes linking promotion information with an account of a customer in a database. The promotion information pertains to a promotion for a product or service offered by a merchant. The method includes receiving a request to provide payment for a transaction using the customer account. The request includes an amount of the transaction and an identifier of the customer account. The method further includes retrieving the promotion information from the database based on the identifier, verifying that the transaction is eligible for the promotion based on the retrieved promotion information, and adjusting the amount of the transaction based on the retrieved promotion information.

Claims

1. A method comprising:

linking promotion information with an account of a customer in a database, using a computer processor, wherein the promotion information pertains to a promotion for a product or a service offered by a merchant;

receiving, at the computer processor from the merchant, a request to provide payment for a transaction using the customer account, wherein the request includes an amount of the transaction and an identifier of the customer account;

retrieving, by the computer processor, the promotion information from the database;

verifying that the transaction is eligible for the promotion based on the retrieved promotion information; and

adjusting, by the computer processor, the amount of the transaction based on the retrieved promotion information.

2. The method of claim 1 wherein the promotion information is retrieved from the database based on the identifier of the customer account.

3. The method of claim 1 wherein the promotion information is retrieved from the database based on a unique identifier, wherein the unique identifier is provided to the merchant by the customer and further included in the request to provide payment.

4. The method of claim 1 wherein verifying that the transaction is eligible for the promotion includes verifying that the merchant is associated with the promotion.

5. The method of claim 1 wherein the request to provide payment further includes an identification of the product or the service and verifying that the transaction is eligible for the promotion includes verifying that the received identification of the product or the service satisfies an eligibility requirement included in the retrieved promotion information.

6. The method of claim 1 wherein verifying that the transaction is eligible for the promotion includes:

transmitting information about the transaction to a provider of the promotion; and

receiving approval to apply the promotion to the transaction from the provider.

7. The method of claim 1 wherein linking the promotion information with the account includes receiving the promotion information from a provider of the promotion in response to a selection of the promotion by the customer.

8. The method of claim 1 further comprising transmitting an authorization for the transaction to the merchant including the adjusted transaction amount.

9. The method of claim 1 further comprising processing the transaction for the transaction amount before adjusting the transaction amount, wherein processing the transaction includes applying a debit to the customer account for the transaction amount and applying a credit to an account of the merchant for the transaction amount.

10. The method of claim 9 wherein the credit to the account of the merchant is reduced based on a transaction fee.

11. The method of claim 9 wherein adjusting the amount of the transaction includes:

applying an adjustment credit to the customer account; and

applying an adjustment debit to the merchant account;

wherein the adjustment credit and the adjustment debit reflect a difference between the amount of the transaction and the adjusted amount of the transaction.

12. The method of claim 1 wherein:

the customer account is a first customer account;

the promotion information is initially associated with a second customer account; and

linking the promotion information with the first customer account includes;

dissociating the promotion information from the second customer account; and

associating the promotion information with the first customer account.

13. The method of claim 1 wherein adjusting the transaction amount includes transmitting a portion of the retrieved promotion information to the merchant and receiving the adjusted transaction amount from the merchant.

14. The method of claim 1 further comprising updating the promotion information to indicate that the promotion has been redeemed after adjusting the amount of the transaction.

15. The method of claim 1 wherein the customer account is a debit card account or a credit card account.

16. A transaction processing system for processing a transaction initiated by a customer comprising:

a database;

a linking module configured to link promotion information with an account of the customer in the database, wherein the promotion information pertains to a promotion for a product or a service offered by a merchant;

a communication module configured to receive a request to provide payment for the transaction using the customer account, wherein the request includes an amount of the transaction and an identifier of the customer account;

a processing module configured to;

retrieve the promotion information from the database;

verify that the transaction is eligible for the promotion based on the retrieved promotion information; and

adjust the amount of the transaction based on the retrieved promotion information.

17. The transaction processing system of claim 16 wherein the promotion information is retrieved from the database based on the identifier of the customer account.

18. The transaction processing system of claim 16 wherein the promotion information is retrieved from the database based on a unique identifier, wherein the unique identifier is provided to the merchant by the customer and further included in the request to provide payment.

19. The transaction processing system of claim 16 wherein configured to verify that the transaction is eligible for the promotion includes configured to verify that the merchant is associated with the promotion.

20. The transaction processing system of claim 16 wherein the request to provide payment further includes an identification of the product or the service and configured to verify that the transaction is eligible for the promotion includes configured to verify that the received identification of the product or the service satisfies an eligibility requirement included in the retrieved promotion information.

21. The transaction processing system of claim 16 wherein configured to link the promotion information with the account includes configured to receive the promotion information from a provider of the promotion in response to a selection of the promotion by the customer.

22. The transaction processing system of claim 16 wherein the communication module is further configured to transmit an authorization for the transaction to the merchant including the adjusted transaction amount.

23. The transaction processing system of claim 16 wherein the processing module is further configured to process the transaction for the transaction amount before adjusting the transaction amount, wherein configured to process the transaction includes configured to apply a debit to the customer account for the transaction amount and to apply a credit to an account of the merchant for the transaction amount.

24. The transaction processing system of claim 23 wherein the credit to the account of the merchant is reduced based on a transaction fee.

25. The transaction processing system of claim 23 wherein configured to adjust the amount of the transaction includes configured to:

apply an adjustment credit to the customer account; and

apply an adjustment debit to the merchant account;

wherein the adjustment credit and the adjustment debit reflect a difference between the amount of the transaction and the adjusted amount of the transaction.

26. The transaction processing system of claim 16 wherein configured to verify that the transaction is eligible for the promotion includes configured to:

transmit a promotion approval request to a provider of the promotion; and

receive a promotion authorization from the provider in response to the promotion approval request.

27. The transaction processing system of claim 16 wherein:

the customer account is a first customer account;

the promotion information is initially associated with a second customer account; and

configured to link the promotion information with the first customer account includes configured to;

dissociate the promotion information from the second customer account; and

associate the promotion information with the first customer account.

28. The transaction processing system of claim 16 wherein configured to adjust the transaction amount includes configured to transmit a portion of the retrieved promotion information to the merchant and configured to receive the adjusted transaction amount from the merchant.

29. The transaction processing system of claim 16 wherein the processing module is further configured to update the promotion information to indicate that the promotion has been redeemed after adjusting the amount of the transaction.

30. The transaction processing system of claim 16 wherein the customer account is a debit card account or a credit card account.

31. A non-transitory computer-readable medium comprising instructions that, when executed by one or more computer processors, direct the one or more computer processors to:

link promotion information with an account of a customer in a database, wherein the promotion information pertains to a promotion for a product or a service offered by a merchant;

receive a request to provide payment for a transaction using the customer account, wherein the request includes an amount of the transaction and an identifier of the customer account;

retrieve the promotion information from the database;

verify that the transaction is eligible for the promotion based on the retrieved promotion information; and

adjust the amount of the transaction based on the retrieved promotion information.

32. The computer-readable medium of claim 31 wherein the promotion information is retrieved from the database based on the identifier of the customer account.

33. The computer-readable medium of claim 31 wherein the promotion information is retrieved from the database based on a unique identifier, wherein the unique identifier is provided to the merchant by the customer and further included in the request to provide payment.

34. The computer-readable medium of claim 31 wherein to verify that the transaction is eligible for the promotion includes to verify that the merchant is associated with the promotion.

35. The computer-readable medium of claim 31 wherein the request to provide payment further includes an identification of the product or the service and to verify that the transaction is eligible for the promotion includes to verify that the received identification of the product or the service satisfies an eligibility requirement included in the retrieved promotion information.

36. The computer-readable medium of claim 31 wherein to verify that the transaction is eligible for the promotion includes to:

transmit information about the transaction to a provider of the promotion; and

receive approval to apply the promotion to the transaction from the provider.

37. The computer-readable medium of claim 31 wherein to link the promotion information with the account includes to receive the promotion information from a provider of the promotion in response to a selection of the promotion by the customer.

38. The computer-readable medium of claim 31 wherein the instructions further direct the one or more computer processors to transmit an authorization for the transaction to the merchant including the adjusted transaction amount.

39. The computer-readable medium of claim 31 wherein:

the transaction is processed for the transaction amount before adjusting the transaction amount; and

processing the transaction includes applying a debit to the customer account for the transaction amount and applying a credit to an account of the merchant for the transaction amount.

40. The computer-readable medium of claim 39 wherein the credit to the account of the merchant is reduced based on a transaction fee.

41. The computer-readable medium of claim 39 wherein to adjust the amount of the transaction includes to:

apply an adjustment credit to the customer account; and

apply an adjustment debit to the merchant account;

wherein the adjustment credit and the adjustment debit reflect a difference between the amount of the transaction and the adjusted amount of the transaction.

42. The computer-readable medium of claim 31 wherein:

the customer account is a first customer account;

the promotion information is initially associated with a second customer account; and

to link the promotion information with the first customer account includes to;

dissociate the promotion information from the second customer account; and

associate the promotion information with the first customer account.

43. The computer-readable medium of claim 31 wherein to adjust the transaction amount includes to transmit a portion of the retrieved promotion information to the merchant and to receive the adjusted transaction amount from the merchant.

44. The computer-readable medium of claim 31 wherein the instructions further direct the one or more processors to update the promotion information to indicate that the promotion has been redeemed after adjusting the amount of the transaction.

45. The computer-readable medium of claim 31 wherein the customer account is a debit card account or a credit card account.
