Abstract

A multi-fluid injector system and methods of operation thereof are presented. One embodiment of such a fluid injector system includes an automatic refill procedure for a fluid injector system comprising a fluid injector and an operably engaged syringe. The procedure includes the step of determining, using an electronic control device operably controlling the fluid injector system, whether a fluid injection procedure involving the syringe is impending. If the electronic control device determines that the fluid injection procedure is not impending, such that the automatic refill will not interfere with the fluid injection procedure, an automatic refill of the syringe is initiated.

Claims

1. An automatic refill procedure for a fluid injector system comprising a fluid injector and an operably engaged syringe, comprising:

determining, using an electronic control device operably controlling the fluid injector system, whether a fluid injection procedure involving the syringe is impending; and

initiating an automatic refill of the syringe if the electronic control device determines that the fluid injection procedure is not impending, such that the automatic refill of the syringe will not interfere with the impending fluid injection procedure.

An automatic refill procedure as claimed in claim 1, wherein the electronic control device determines whether the fluid injection procedure involving the syringe is impending based at least partially on inactivity of at least one component of the fluid injector system for a certain period of time.

An automatic refill procedure as claimed in claim 2, wherein the at least one component of the fluid injector system comprises a hand controller, and wherein inactivity of the hand controller for a certain period of time indicates that the fluid injection procedure involving the syringe is not impending, such that the automatic refill of the syringe will not interfere with the impending fluid injection procedure.

4. An automatic refill procedure as claimed in claim 3, wherein the inactivity of the hand controller for the certain period of time is determined based at least partially on a sensor in the hand controller.

5. An automatic refill procedure as claimed in claim 4, wherein the sensor is selected from the group consisting of accelerometer, position sensor, orientation sensor, capacitance touch sensor, or thermal sensor.

An automatic refill procedure as claimed in claim 1, wherein the electronic control device comprises a timer for monitoring inactivity of at least one component of the fluid injector system, and wherein inactivity of the at least one component for a certain period of time indicates that the automatic refill of the syringe will not interfere with the impending fluid injection procedure.

An automatic refill procedure as claimed in claim 6, wherein the at least one component of the fluid injector system comprises a hand controller, and wherein the inactivity of the hand controller for a certain period of time indicates that the automatic refill of the syringe will not interfere with the impending fluid injection procedure.

8. An automatic refill procedure as claimed in claim 7, wherein a sensor in the hand controller signals to the electronic control device that the hand controller is inactive.

9. An automatic refill procedure as claimed in claim 8, wherein the sensor is selected from the group consisting of accelerometer, position sensor, orientation sensor, capacitance touch sensor, or thermal sensor.

10. An automatic refill procedure as claimed in claim 1, further comprising determining if a preprogrammed trigger minimum volume is present in the syringe.

11. An automatic refill procedure as claimed in claim 10, wherein the preprogrammed trigger minimum volume is at least partially determined by or from at least one of the following:

tracking fluid volume dispensed from the syringe during operation of the fluid injector system, a fluid level sensor associated with the syringe, an amount of fluid to perform a next fluid injection procedure, or any combination thereof.

12. An automatic refill procedure as claimed in claim 10, wherein the preprogrammed trigger minimum volume is determined to be present in the syringe when, at the completion of a fluid injection procedure, there is not enough fluid to perform a next fluid injection procedure.

13. An automatic refill procedure as claimed in claim 1, wherein the initiated automatic refill refills the syringe without inducing a vacuum condition in the syringe.

14. An automatic refill procedure for a fluid injector system comprising a fluid injector and an operably engaged syringe, comprising:

determining, using an electronic control device operably controlling the fluid injector system, whether a preprogrammed trigger minimum volume is present in the syringe; and

initiating an automatic refill of the syringe if the preprogrammed trigger minimum volume is present in the syringe.

15. An automatic refill procedure as claimed in claim 14, wherein the preprogrammed trigger minimum volume is at least partially determined by tracking fluid volume dispensed from the syringe during operation of the fluid injector system.

16. An automatic refill procedure as claimed in claim 14, wherein the preprogrammed trigger minimum volume is at least partially determined from a fluid level sensor associated with the syringe.

17. An automatic refill procedure as claimed in claim 14, wherein fill volume and rate of refill are preprogrammed in the electronic control device.

18. An automatic refill procedure as claimed in claim 14, wherein the preprogrammed trigger minimum volume is determined to be present in the syringe when, at the completion of a fluid injection procedure, there is not enough fluid to perform a next fluid injection procedure.

19. An automatic refill procedure as claimed in claim 14, further comprising stopping the automatic refill of the syringe either automatically by the electronic control device or manually.

20. A fluid injector system comprising a fluid injector and an operably engaged syringe, comprising:

at least one processor in communication with the fluid injector system, the at least one processor configured to;

determine if at least one fluid injection procedure involving the syringe is impending; and

initiate an automatic refill of the syringe if the at least one fluid injection procedure is not determined to be impending, such that the automatic refill of the syringe will not interfere with the fluid injection procedure.

21. A fluid injector system as claimed in claim 20, further comprising at least one hand controller configured to operate at least a portion of the fluid injector system, wherein the determination if at least one fluid injection procedure involving the syringe is impending is based at least partially on at least one of the following:

inactivity of the at least one hand controller, a movement of the at least one hand controller, an orientation of the at least one hand controller, a physical contact between the at least one hand controller and an individual, or any combination thereof.

A fluid injector system as claimed in claim 21, wherein the at least one hand controller comprises at least one sensor, and wherein the determination if at least one fluid injection procedure involving the syringe is impending is based at least partially on at least one output of the at least one sensor.

23. A fluid injector system as claimed in claim 22, wherein the at least one sensor comprises at least one of the following:

an accelerometer, a position sensor, an orientation sensor, a capacitance touch sensor, a thermal sensor, or any combination thereof.

24. A fluid injector system as claimed in claim 20, wherein the electronic control device determines whether the fluid injection procedure involving the syringe is impending based at least partially on inactivity of at least one component of the fluid injector system for a certain period of time.
