1. A wireless communication system having:

  • one or more base stations each having at least one of a plurality of sets of antennas, each set of antennas being capable of serving a distinct geographical area and each set of antennas being capable of being configured for use as a plurality of antenna ports; and

    a subscriber station in wireless communication with at least one base station for receiving a data transmission specific to the subscriber station;

    whereinsaid data transmission is jointly transmitted using at least two antenna ports with transmit diversity applied between said at least two antenna ports, and at least two of said at least two antenna ports being configured from different ones of said plurality of sets of antennas.
