Abstract

A protective cover for an electronic device that has an interactive control panel and one or more electrical contacts includes a protective shell having first member and a second member. The second member is configured to join with the first case member to at least partially cover the electronic device. An aperture defined by the protective shell is aligned with the interactive control panel when the electronic device is at least partially enclosed by the protective shell. A securing mechanism secures the first member with the second member. An electrical connection attached to the protective shell is configured to connect an electrical source to at least one of the electrical contacts of the electronic device to provide an electrical connection to the electrical source when the electronic device is received by the first member.

Claims

1. A protective cover for an electronic device having an interactive control panel and one or more electrical contacts for receiving electrical power, the protective cover comprising:

a protective shell having a first member and a second member for enclosing and substantially surrounding the electronic device, the shell being substantially rigid and substantially crush-resistant;

the first member having a proximal portion, a distal portion, and opposing side portions, as well as a surface extending between the opposing side portions, wherein the surface includes an inner surface and an outer surface, the inner surface to receive the electronic device;

the second member having a proximal portion, a distal portion, as well as opposing side portions and being configured to join with the first member such that the first member and the second member at least partially cover the electronic device when the electronic device is received by the inner surface of the first member, the electronic device being a separate unit from the protective shell;

an aperture defined by the protective shell, the aperture being aligned with the interactive control panel when the electronic device is at least partially covered by the first member and the second member of the protective shell;

a clasping mechanism configured for securing the first member with the second member when the electronic device is enclosed and substantially surrounded by the shell; and

an electrical connection attached to the protective shell, the electrical connection configured to connect an electrical source to at least one of the one or more electrical contacts of the electronic device to provide the electrical power from the electrical source to the electronic device after the electronic device is received by the inner surface of the first member.

2. The protective cover in accordance with claim 1, wherein the electrical connection is attached to the first member of the protective shell.

3. The protective cover in accordance with claim 1, wherein the electrical connection is attached to the second member of the protective shell.

The protective cover in accordance with claim 1, wherein the clasping mechanism comprises a first clasp coupled with the first member and a second clasp coupled with the second member, the first clasp and second clasp being configured to clasp together to secure the first member with the second member to form the protective shell to at least partially cover the electronic device.

The protective cover in accordance with claim 1, further comprising a membrane configured to be disposed over and adjacent to the interactive control panel of the electronic device when the electronic device is at least partially covered by the protective shell, the membrane and the protective shell forming the protective cover for the electronic device having the interactive control panel, the membrane being sufficiently thin to allow inputs on a front side of the membrane to be received by the interactive control panel.

6. The protective cover in accordance with claim 1, wherein at least one of the first member and the second member includes one or more light transmissive features to transmit light from a respective indicator light.

7. The protective cover in accordance with claim 6, wherein at least one of the one or more light transmissive features is configured to convey the light from the indicator light associated with the electrical source.

8. The protective cover in accordance with claim 1, wherein the electrical connection includes one or more of an electrical contact and an electrical cable.

9. The protective cover in accordance with claim 1, wherein the electrical connection comprises a spring loaded probe.

10. The protective cover in accordance with claim 1, wherein the electrical connection includes one or more of an electrical contact and an electrical cable.

11. The protective cover in accordance with claim 1, wherein the electrical connection is a fixed electrical connector.

12. A protective cover for an electronic device having an interactive control panel and one or more electrical contacts for receiving electrical communication, the protective cover comprising:

a protective shell having a first member and a second member configured to surround the electronic device, the shell having a substantially rigid portion providing crush-resistance;

the first member having a proximal portion, a distal portion, opposing side portions, and having an inner surface and an outer surface, the inner surface for receiving the electronic device;

the second member having a proximal portion, a distal portion and opposing side portions, and being configured to join with the first member wherein the first member and the second member together at least partially cover the electronic device when the electronic device is received by the inner surface of the first member, the electronic device being a separate unit from the protective shell;

an aperture defined by an inner perimeter of the protective shell, the aperture being aligned with a top surface of the electronic device to provide access to at least the interactive control panel of the electronic device when the electronic device is at least partially covered by the first member and the second member of the protective shell;

a securing mechanism configured to secure the first member with the second member when the electronic device is surrounded by the shell; and

an electrical connection attached to the protective shell, the electrical connection configured to connect an electrical communication source to at least one of the one or more electrical contacts of the electronic device to convey electrical communication between the electrical communication source and the electronic device after the electronic device is received by the inner surface of the first member.

13. The protective cover in accordance with claim 12, wherein the electrical connection is attached to the first member of the protective shell.

14. The protective cover in accordance with claim 12, wherein the electrical connection is attached to the second member of the protective shell.

15. The protective cover in accordance with claim 12, wherein the electrical communication source also provides electrical power to the electronic device.

The protective cover in accordance with claim 12, wherein the securing mechanism comprises a first clasp coupled with the first member and a second clasp coupled with the second member, the first clasp and second clasp being configured to clasp together to secure the first member with the second member to form the protective shell to at least partially cover the electronic device.

The protective cover in accordance with claim 12, further comprising a membrane configured to be disposed over and adjacent to the interactive control panel of the electronic device when the electronic device is at least partially covered by the protective shell, the membrane and the protective shell forming the protective cover for the electronic device having the interactive control panel, the membrane being sufficiently thin to allow inputs on a front side of the membrane to be received by the interactive control panel.

18. The protective cover in accordance with claim 12, wherein at least one of the first member and the second member includes one or more light transmissive features configured to transmit light from an indicator light.

19. The protective cover in accordance with claim 18, wherein at least one of the one or more light transmissive features is configured to convey light associated with the electrical communication source.

20. The protective cover in accordance with claim 12, wherein the electrical connection includes one or more of an electrical contact and an electrical cable.

21. A protective cover for an electronic device having an interactive control panel and one or more electrical contacts, the protective cover comprising:

a protective shell having a first member and a second member providing a perimeter for at least partially surrounding the electronic device, the shell providing protection to the electronic device when dropped;

the first member having a proximal portion, a distal portion, opposing side portions, and having an inner surface and an outer surface, the inner surface for receiving the electronic device;

the second member having a proximal portion, a distal portion, as well as opposing side portions and being configured to join with the first member such that the first member and the second member at least partially cover the electronic device when the electronic device is received by the inner surface of the first member, the electronic device being a separate unit from the protective shell;

an aperture defined by the protective shell, the aperture being at least partially aligned with the interactive control panel when the electronic device is at least partially covered by the first member and the second member of the protective shell; and

an electrical connection attached to the protective shell, the electrical connection to provide communication between an electrical source and the electrical contacts of the electronic device when the electronic device is received by the inner surface of the first member.

The protective cover in accordance with claim 21, wherein the electronic device is chargeable by connection of at least one of the one or more electrical contacts of the electronic device to the electrical source via the electrical connection when the electrical source provides electricity to charge a battery of the electronic device.

The protective cover in accordance with claim 22, wherein the protective shell is sized to mate with a cradle having an electrical source, and the electrical connection is configured to connect the at least one of the one or more electrical contacts to the electrical source provided by the cradle when the protective shell is mated with the cradle.

24. The protective cover in accordance with claim 21, further comprising:

a securing mechanism configured for securing the first member to the second member.

25. The protective cover in accordance with claim 21, wherein the electrical source provides electrical communication signals to the electronic device or receives electrical communication signals from the electronic device.

26. The protective cover in accordance with claim 21, further comprising a membrane configured to be disposed over and adjacent to the interactive control panel of the electronic device when the electronic device is at least partially covered by the protective shell, the membrane and the protective shell forming the protective cover for the electronic device having the interactive control panel, the membrane being sufficiently thin to allow inputs on a front side of the membrane to be received by the interactive control panel.

27. The protective cover in accordance with claim 21, wherein at least one of the first member and the second member includes one or more light transmissive features configured to transmit light from an indicator light.

28. The protective cover in accordance with claim 27, wherein at least one of one or more light transmissive features is configured to transmit light associated with a battery condition.

29. The protective cover in accordance with claim 21, wherein the electrical connection includes one or more electrical cables coupled to at least one of the first member and the second member.

30. A protective enclosure for an electronic device having an interactive control panel and one or more electrical contacts, the protective enclosure comprising:

a shell configured to enclose and surround the electronic device, the electronic device being a separate unit from the shell, the shell being configured to permit insertion and removal of the electronic device by hand, the shell comprising;

a front shell member having a front shell inner surface, a front shell outer surface, and a front shell perimeter portion that includes a front shell perimeter edge and an interactive control panel frame, the interactive control panel frame defining an aperture that is configured to provide access to the interactive control panel when the electronic device is enclosed in the protective enclosure proximate the front shell inner surface and is at least partially covered by the front shell member of the protective shell, the front shell member further having an elevated protective rim surrounding the interactive control panel frame to form a recess from the elevated protective rim to the interactive control panel frame, the elevated protective rim to protect the interactive control panel of the electronic device from contact with an object that is larger than the aperture when the electronic device is enclosed and surrounded by the shell;

a rear shell member having a rear shell inner surface, a rear shell outer surface, and a rear shell perimeter portion that includes a rear shell perimeter edge, the rear shell perimeter edge of the rear shell member being configured to mate with the front shell perimeter edge of the front shell member;

a securing mechanism disposed along at least a portion of one or more of the perimeter portion of the rear shell member and the perimeter portion of the front shell member, the securing mechanism configured to clasp the rear shell member with the front shell member when the rear shell perimeter edge of the rear shell member is mated with the front shell perimeter edge of the front shell member, and to form the shell to enclose and surround the electronic device; and

an electrical connection attached to the front shell member or the rear shell member of the protective shell, the electrical connection configured to connect an electrical source to at least one of the one or more electrical contacts of the electronic device.
