Abstract

There is provided a rake receiver for a femtocell base station, the rake receiver being for use in receiving a multipath signal, the rake receiver comprising a plurality of fingers, and wherein the rake receiver is adapted to assign multiple fingers to the same path in the multipath signal.

Claims

1. A femtocell base station, comprising:

a rake receiver for use in receiving a multipath signal, the rake receiver comprising a plurality of fingers, and wherein the rake receiver is configured to assign multiple fingers to a single path in the multipath signal.

2. The femtocell base station as claimed in claim 1, wherein the rake receiver further comprises a coarse timing searcher that is configured to identify paths in the received multipath signal.

3. The femtocell base station as claimed in claim 2, wherein the coarse timing searcher identifies the paths by detecting signal peaks in the received multipath signal.

The femtocell base station as claimed in claim 3, wherein the received multipath signal is represented by a plurality of data samples, the coarse timing searcher is configured to identify two adjacent data samples in the plurality of data samples that correspond to a single detected signal path and the rake receiver is configured to assign a finger to each of the two adjacent data samples for at least one of the paths.

5. The femtocell base station as claimed in claim 4, wherein the rake receiver further comprises a control block for receiving an output from the coarse timing searcher indicating the detected paths and for controlling the assignment of fingers to the detected paths.

6. The femtocell base station as claimed in claim 1, wherein an output of each of the fingers is combined to produce a composite signal.

7. The femtocell base station as claimed in claim 1, wherein each finger is configured to perform delay and phase equalization on the path assigned thereto.

8. The femtocell base station as claimed in claim 1, wherein the femtocell base station is for use in a 3GPP Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS) communication network.

9. A user equipment comprising:

a rake receiver for use in receiving a multipath signal, the rake receiver comprising a plurality of fingers, and wherein the rake receiver is configured to;

assign multiple fingers to a single path in the multipath signal when the user equipment is communicating with a femtocell base station; and

assign a single finger to each path in the multipath signal when the user equipment is communicating with a microcell or macrocell base station.

10. The user equipment as claimed in claim 9, wherein the rake receiver further comprises a coarse timing searcher that is configured to identify paths in the multipath signal.

11. The user equipment as claimed in claim 10, wherein the coarse timing searcher identifies the paths by detecting signal peaks in the multipath signal.

The user equipment as claimed in claim 11, wherein the multipath signal is represented by a plurality of data samples, and wherein, when the user equipment is communicating with the femtocell base station, the coarse timing searcher is configured to identify two adjacent data samples in the plurality of data samples that correspond to a single detected signal path and the rake receiver is configured to assign a finger to each of the two adjacent data samples for at least one of the identified paths.

13. A femtocell base station having a rake receiver, comprising:

a coarse timing searcher configured to configured to process a multipath signal to determine course timing accuracy thereby detecting a peak which coarsely identifies the single path in the multipath signal;

a finger control/selection block, responsive to course timing searcher detecting the peak which coarsely identifies the single path, configured to assign a first finger to the single path and a second finger to the single path such that multiple fingers are applied to the single path, wherein the course timing searcher has sampling error as a result of course tracking;

a plurality of fingers as part of the rake receiver, the rake receiver configured with at least the first finger and the second finger, both of which are assigned to the single path in the multipath signal to collect signal energy from the coarsely identified single path such that assigning more than one finger to the single path compensates for error from the course timing searcher.

14. The femtocell base station having a rake receiver of claim 13, wherein the single path is identified as two signal peaks because the coarse timing searcher has sampling error and thus does not accurately identify the single path.

The femtocell base station having a rake receiver of claim 13, wherein the rake receiver compensates for timing error resulting from the coarse timing searcher by assigning fingers at a sub-chip accuracy of less than 1 chip to eliminate the need for a complex and precise fine timing finger tracker.
