1. An analyte sensor comprising:

  • a first substrate comprising a first major surface and a second major surface and a second substrate comprising a first major surface and a second major surface such that the second major surface of the first substrate faces the first major surface of the second substrate to provide a sample chamber,the sample chamber comprising a first electrode disposed on the second major surface of the first substrate or the first major surface of the second substrate and a second electrode disposed on the second major surface of the first substrate or the first major surface of the second substrate;

    wherein the sample chamber is positioned at a proximal end of the analyte sensor and wherein a distal end of the analyte sensor is connectable to a meter;

    a conductive calibration pattern on the first major surface of the first substrate and/or second major surface of second substrate at or near the distal end, wherein the calibration pattern provides a species-specific calibration information to the meter;

    wherein the conductive calibration pattern is one of a plurality of patterns, wherein the plurality of patterns comprise different patterns which provide different species-specific calibration information to a meter.
