Abstract

A microwave ablation system configured for use in luminal network is provided. The microwave ablation system includes a microwave energy source. A tool for treating tissue is provided with the microwave ablation system. An extended working channel is configured to provide passage for the tool. A locatable guide catheter is positionable through the extended working channel and configured to navigate the extended working channel adjacent the target tissue. The microwave ablation system includes a navigation system that is configured for guiding the tool, extended working channel or the locatable guide through a luminal network following a predetermined determined pathway to the target tissue. One or more imaging modalities may be utilized for confirming placement of the tool within target tissue.

Claims

1. A microwave ablation system configured for use in luminal network, comprising:

a microwave energy source;

a tool for treating tissue;

an extended working channel configured to provide passage for the tool;

a locatable guide catheter positionable through the extended working channel and configured to navigate the extended working channel adjacent the target tissue; and

a navigation system for guiding at least one of the tool, extended working channel or the locatable guide through a luminal network following a predetermined determined pathway to the target tissue.

2. The microwave ablation system according to claim 1, further including a bronchoscope configured to receive the extended working channel for providing access to the luminal network.

3. The microwave ablation system according to claim 1, wherein the tool is selected from the group consisting of a microwave ablation catheter, a biopsy brush, needle brushes and biopsy forceps.

4. The microwave ablation system according to claim 3, wherein the microwave ablation catheter comprises:

a coaxial cable connected at its proximal end to a microwave energy source and at its distal end to a distal radiating section, the coaxial cable including inner and outer conductors and

a dielectric positioned therebetween, the inner conductor extending distally past the outer conductor and in sealed engagement with the distal radiating section; and

a balun formed in part from a conductive material electrically connected to the outer conductor of the coaxial cable and extending along at least a portion of the coaxial cable, the conductive material having a braided configuration and covered by at least one insulative material.

5. The microwave ablation system according to claim 4, further including a multi-lumen housing that is configured to receive the ablation catheter.

6. The microwave ablation system according to claim 5, wherein the multi-lumen housing includes a hub at a proximal end thereof, the hub including a plurality of ports.

The microwave ablation system according to claim 6, wherein at least one of the plurality of ports is an electrical port configured to provide electrical communication between the coaxial cable and the microwave energy source, and wherein at least two of the plurality of ports are a fluid intake port and a fluid return port configured to provide respective ingress and egress of a coolant to and from the multi-lumen housing for cooling the distal radiating section of the coaxial cable.

The microwave ablation system according to claim 7, wherein the multi-lumen housing includes a four lumen configuration having two lumens dedicated for communication with a respective one of the fluid intake and return ports and two lumens dedicated to support the coaxial cable including the balun.

The microwave ablation system according to claim 8, wherein the multi-lumen housing includes a five lumen configuration having four lumens two of which being dedicated for communication with the fluid intake port and two of which being dedicated for communication with the fluid return port and one lumen designated to support the coaxial cable including the balun.

10. The microwave ablation system according to claim 4, wherein the extended working channel includes a closed distal end.

11. The microwave ablation system according to claim 10, wherein the extended working channel includes a multi-lumen configuration and is configured to receive the ablation catheter.

12. The microwave ablation system according to claim 11, wherein the extended working channel includes hub at a proximal end thereof, the hub including a plurality of ports.

The microwave ablation system according to claim 12, wherein at least two of the plurality of ports are a fluid intake port and a fluid return port configured to provide respective ingress and egress of a coolant to and from the extended working channel for cooling the distal radiating section of the coaxial cable.

14. The microwave ablation system according to claim 13, wherein the extended working channel includes one of:

a three lumen configuration having two lumens dedicated for communication with a respective one of the fluid intake and return ports and one lumen dedicated to support the coaxial cable including the balun;

a four lumen configuration having two lumens dedicated for communication with a respective one of the fluid intake and return ports and two lumens dedicated to support the coaxial cable including the balun; and

a five lumen configuration having four lumens two of which being dedicated for communication with the fluid intake port and two of which being dedicated for communication with the fluid return port and one lumen designated to receive the ablation catheter.

15. The microwave ablation system according to claim 1, wherein the predetermined pathway is generated based on computed tomographic (CT) data of the luminal network, and is displayed in a generated model.

16. The microwave ablation system according to claim 15, wherein the predetermined pathway is generated from CT data to identify a pathway to a target identified by a user in the CT data, and the pathway is generated for acceptance by the user before use in the navigation system.

17. A microwave ablation system configured for use in luminal network, comprising:

a microwave energy source;

a tool for treating tissue;

an extended working channel configured to provide passage for the tool;

a locatable guide catheter positionable through the extended working channel and configured to navigate the extended working channel adjacent the target tissue; and

at least one imaging modality for confirming placement of the tool within target tissue.

18. The microwave ablation system according to claim 17, further including a bronchoscope configured to receive the extended working channel for providing access to the luminal network.

19. The microwave ablation system according to claim 18, wherein the tool is selected from the group consisting of a microwave ablation catheter, a biopsy brush, needle brushes and biopsy forceps.

20. The microwave ablation system according to claim 19, wherein the microwave ablation catheter comprises:

a coaxial cable connected at its proximal end to a microwave energy source and at its distal end to a distal radiating section, the coaxial cable including inner and outer conductors and

a dielectric positioned therebetween, the inner conductor extending distally past the outer conductor and in sealed engagement with the distal radiating section; and

a balun formed in part from a conductive material electrically connected to the outer conductor of the coaxial cable and extending along at least a portion of the coaxial cable, the conductive material having a braided configuration and covered by at least one insulative material.

21. The microwave ablation system according to claim 20, further including a multi-lumen housing that is configured to receive the ablation catheter.

22. The microwave ablation system according to claim 21, wherein the multi-lumen housing includes a hub at a proximal end thereof, the hub including a plurality of ports.

The microwave ablation system according to claim 22, wherein at least one of the plurality of ports is an electrical port configured to provide electrical communication between the coaxial cable and the microwave energy source, and wherein at least two of the plurality of ports are a fluid intake port and a fluid return port configured to provide respective ingress and egress of a coolant to and from the multi-lumen housing for cooling the distal radiating section of the coaxial cable.

The microwave ablation system according to claim 23, wherein the multi-lumen housing includes a three lumen configuration having two lumens dedicated for communication with a respective one of the fluid intake and return ports and one lumen dedicated to support the coaxial cable including the balun.

The microwave ablation system according to claim 24, wherein the multi-lumen housing includes a five lumen configuration having four lumens two of which being dedicated for communication with the fluid intake port and two of which being dedicated for communication with the fluid return port and one lumen designated to support the coaxial cable including the balun.

26. The microwave ablation system according to claim 17, wherein the extended working channel includes a closed distal end.

27. The microwave ablation system according to claim 26 wherein the extended working channel includes a multi-lumen configuration and is configured to receive the ablation catheter.

28. The microwave ablation system according to claim 27, wherein the extended working channel includes hub at a proximal end thereof, the hub including a plurality of ports.

29. The microwave ablation system according to claim 28, wherein the extended working channel includes one of:

a three lumen configuration having two lumens dedicated for communication with a respective one of the fluid intake and return ports and one lumen dedicated to support the coaxial cable including the balun;

a four lumen configuration having two lumens dedicated for communication with a respective one of the fluid intake and return ports and two lumens dedicated to support the coaxial cable including the balun; and

a five lumen configuration having four lumens two of which being dedicated for communication with the fluid intake port and two of which being dedicated for communication with the fluid return port and one lumen designated to receive the ablation catheter.

30. The microwave ablation system according to claim 17, wherein the at least one imaging modality is selected from the group consisting of computer tomography, ultrasound and fluoroscopy.

31. The microwave ablation system according to claim 30, wherein computer tomography data is manipulated to create a virtual fluoroscopic image that identifies the target tissue.

32. The microwave ablation system according to claim 31, wherein the virtual fluoroscopic image is generated for comparison with a live fluoroscopic image to provide a user with the ability to compare placement of the extended working channel and microwave ablation catheter within target tissue.
