Abstract

An ambidextrously operated charging handle for use with the M16 family of firearms is provided. The charging handle provides a latch mechanism consisting of two extended handles which are in operational communication with each other. Either handle may be independently retracted to disengage the latch mechanism of the charging handle from the host firearms receiver. The spring-biased mechanism of the charging handle is sheltered within the interior of the charging handle thereby protecting it from the elements. Further, an improved axial pin has been provided to secure the handles of the latch mechanism to the grasping portion of the charging handle.

Claims

1. A charging handle for a rifle having a receiver, comprising:

a body portion comprised of a shaft having a transverse member at a rearward end and a bolt carrier engagement portion at a forward end;

a latch mechanism comprised of a primary handle defining a latch element on it'"'"'s front end and a protruding member on its back end, a secondary handle defining a protruding member on its back end, a spring and a plunger;

said latch mechanism is moveable between a first position and a second position, said first position placing said latch element into contact with the firearm receiver, said second position disengaging said latch element from the firearm receiver;

said primary handle and said secondary handle are secured to said transverse member, said plunger provides a means of placing said primary handle and said secondary handle into communication whereby the rotation of one handle results in the simultaneous rotation of the other handle and the movement of said latch element;

2. The charging handle of claim 1, wherein said spring and at least a portion of said plunger are housed within a longitudinally extending opening in the backside of said transverse member.

3. The charging handle of claim 1, further comprised of two axial pins which secure said primary handle and said secondary handle to said transverse member and allow for the rotational movement thereof.

4. The charging handle of claim 3, wherein said axial pins are constructed from a solid piece of metal.

5. The charging handle of claim 4, wherein said axial pin has a head portion and a tail portion connected by a body portion, said tail portion being smaller in diameter than said body portion, said tail portion is constructed to expand while being deformed.

6. The charging handle of claim 1, wherein said plunger has two recesses located opposite each other, each recess is configured to receive one of said protruding members located on said primary handle and said secondary handle, thereby linking their movement.

7. The charging handle of claim 6, wherein said recesses of said plunger are approximately U-shaped and located opposite each other, said recesses are configured to receive a convex portion of the protrusions found on said handles.

8. A charging handle operable to manually reciprocate the action of a rifle comprising:

a T-shaped body portion having a front end with a bolt carrier engagement portion and a rear end defining a top surface, a bottom surface, a left side, a right side and a back side;

a latch mechanism consisting of a primary handle having a latch element on its forward end, a secondary handle, a spring and a plunger;

said rear end of said body portion defining a recess on said right side and a recess on said left side between said top and bottom surfaces, each recess being configured to receive a portion of either said primary handle or said secondary handle;

said spring and said plunger are housed within the interior of said rear end of the charging handle;

said plunger is constructed to receive a portion of said primary handle and said secondary handle thereby linking their movements, said spring biases said plunger towards said back side of the charging handle thereby rotating the primary handle so that said latch elements engages with a portion of the rifle.

9. The charging handle of claim 8, wherein said spring and said plunger are housed within an opening which runs parallel with the longitudinal axis of the charging handle.

10. The charging handle of claim 8, wherein said primary handle has an aperture constructed to receive an axial pin which is secured to the charging handle, said secondary handle having an aperture sized to receive an axial pin which is secured to the charging handle.

11. The charging handle of claim 10, wherein said axial pin is a rivet, said rivet is constructed to allow a handle to rotate when mounted to the charging handle.

12. The charging handle of claim 8, further comprising an aperture through the interior of said rear end extending between said recess on said left side and said recess on said right side.

13. The charging handle of claim 12, wherein said aperture is constructed to receive a portion of said primary handle and said secondary handle with said spring and said plunger being housed within a perpendicular bore that bisects said aperture.

14. The charging handle of claim 13, wherein said aperture is defined by two parallel side walls which are perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the charging handle.

15. A rifle charging handle comprising:

a body portion comprised of a shaft having a transverse member at a rearward end and a bolt carrier engagement portion at a forward end, said transverse member defining a top surface, a bottom surface, a right side and a left side;

a latch mechanism comprised of at least one rotatable handle, a spring and a plunger;

said at least one rotatable handle having on it'"'"'s front a latch element for releasable engaging with an exterior portion of a rifle and a protruding member on its back end

said transverse member defining at least one recess on said left side between said top surface and said bottom surface, said at least one recess being configured to receive a portion of at least one rotatable handle;

said spring and said plunger are housed within an interior space of said transverse member;

said plunger is constructed to receive the protruding member of at least one rotatable handle, said spring biases said plunger towards the back end of the charging handle thereby pivoting said rotatable handle so that said latch element engages with a portion of the rifle.

16. The rifle charging handle of claim 15, wherein said spring and said plunger are housed within an opening which runs parallel to the longitudinal axis of the charging handle.

17. The rifle charging handle of claim 16, further comprising an aperture through the interior of said transverse member, extending between said recess and said opening that houses said spring and plunger.

18. The rifle charging handle of claim 17, wherein said aperture is constructed to allow said protruding member to pass through and engage with a recess located on said plunger.

19. The rifle charging handle of claim 18, wherein said aperture is defined by two parallel side walls which are perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the rifle charging handle.

20. The rifle charging handle of claim 15, wherein said at least one rotatable handle has an aperture thereon constructed to receive an axial pin which is secured to the transverse member of the rifle charging handle.

21. The rifle charging handle of claim 20, wherein said axial pin is a rivet, said rivet is constructed to allow a rotatable handle to pivot when mounted to the charging handle.
