Abstract

Methods and apparatus are provided for shared situational awareness between a first display and a second display onboard an aircraft. The first display and the second display are associated with a respective first user input device and second user input device that each receive user input with respect to the first display and the second display. The method includes receiving a request to activate a shared situational awareness system to enable telestration between the first display and the second display. The method also includes determining, based on user input received from the first user input device and the second user input device, if a request to change a background image displayed on the first display and the second display has been received, and outputting a different background image for display on the first display and the second display, which is generated from data relating to the operation of the aircraft.

Claims

1. A system for shared situational awareness between a first display and a second display onboard an aircraft, each of the first display and the second display being associated with a respective first user input device and second user input device that each receive user input with respect to the first display and the second display, the system comprising:

a source of data regarding the operation of the aircraft;

an illustration control module that receives user selection data and user input data from the first user input device and the second user input device and that sets illustration data based on the user selection data and user input data; and

a graphical user interface manager control module that outputs a graphical user interface that includes the data regarding the operation of the aircraft and the illustration data, the graphical user interface being displayed on both the first display and the second display to enable shared situational awareness between the first display and the second display.

2. The system of claim 1, wherein the data regarding the operation of the aircraft is selected from the group comprising:

traffic data, weather data, in-trail procedure data, taxiway data, four-dimensional trajectory data, and combinations thereof

3. The system of claim 1, further comprising:

a background control module that receives user selection data from the graphical user interface manager control module and the data regarding the operation of the aircraft, and based on the user selection data sets background data for the graphical user interface manager control module that includes a background image to display on the first display and second display.

4. The system of claim 3, wherein the illustration data is superimposed on the background image.

5. The system of claim 3, further comprising:

an annotation control module that receives user selection data and text data from the graphical user interface manager control module, and based on the user selection data and text data sets annotation data for the graphical user interface manager control module, the annotation data including text for display on the first display and second display.

6. The system of claim 5, wherein the annotation data is superimposed on the background image adjacent to the illustration data.

7. The system of claim 4, wherein the illustration data comprises a line or a symbol.

8. The system of claim 1, wherein the graphical user interface manager control module receives user input data to activate the display of the graphical user interface on both the first display and the second display.

9. The system of claim 6, wherein the graphical user interface manager control module receives user input data from the first user input device and the second user input device, and sets the user selection data based on the user input data.

10. A method for shared situational awareness between a first display and a second display onboard an aircraft, each of the first display and the second display being associated with a respective first user input device and second user input device that each receive user input with respect to the first display and the second display, comprising:

receiving a request to activate a shared situational awareness system to enable telestration between the first display and the second display;

determining, based on user input received from the first user input device and the second user input device, if a request to change a background image displayed on the first display and the second display has been received; and

outputting a different background image for display on the first display and second display that is generated from data relating to the operation of the aircraft.

11. The method of claim 10, further comprising:

generating the background image based on weather data regarding the weather surrounding and along a flight plan for the aircraft.

12. The method of claim 10, further comprising:

generating the background image based on traffic data regarding at least one of air traffic and ground traffic surrounding the aircraft along the flight plan for the aircraft.

13. The method of claim 10, further comprising:

generating the background image based on taxiway data associated with a taxiway of an airport along the flight plan of the aircraft.

14. The method of claim 10, further comprising:

generating the background image based on in-trail procedure data related to the operation of the aircraft.

15. The method of claim 10, further comprising:

generating the background image based on a four-dimensional trajectory for the aircraft.

16. The method of claim 10, further comprising:

determining, based on user input received from the first user input device and the second user input device, if an illustrator has been selected; and

superimposing illustration data on the background image based on the selected illustrator that illustrates a movement of the first user input device or second user input device relative to the respective one of the first display on the first display and second display.

17. The method of claim 16, further comprising:

determining, based on user input received from the first user input device and the second user input device, if an annotation has been selected; and

outputting annotation data that annotates the illustration data superimposed on the background image on the first display and second display.

18. A computer program product for processing a digital signal, comprising:

a tangible storage medium readable by a processing circuit and storing instructions for execution by the processing circuit for performing a method comprising;

receiving a request to activate a shared situational awareness system to enable telestration between a first display and a second display onboard an aircraft;

receiving data regarding the operation of the aircraft from an operational data source;

generating a background image for display on the first display and the second display based on the data regarding the operation of the aircraft;

receiving user input from a first user input device associated with the first display and a second user input device associated with the second display;

generating illustration data based on the user input; and

outputting a graphical user interface that includes the illustration data superimposed on the background image for display on the first display and the second display.

19. The computer program product of claim 18, wherein receiving data regarding the operation of the aircraft further comprises:

receiving weather data, traffic data, taxiway data, in-trail procedure data and four-dimensional trajectory data associated with a flight plan of the aircraft; and

based on the weather data, traffic data, taxiway data, in-trail procedure data and four-dimensional trajectory data, setting background data for a graphical user interface manager control module,

wherein the graphical user interface manager control module uses the background data to generate the background image for display on the first display and second display.

20. The computer program product of claim 18, further comprising:

determining if an annotation has been selected based on the user input;

generating annotation data based on the user input; and

superimposing the annotation data adjacent to the illustration data on the graphical user interface for display on the first display and the second display.
