Abstract

A method for making carbon nanotube composite film is provided. An original carbon nanotube film includes carbon nanotubes joined end to end by van der Waals attractive force. The carbon nanotubes substantially extend along a first direction. A patterned carbon nanotube film is formed by patterning the original carbon nanotube film to define at least one row of through holes arranged in the original carbon nanotube film along the first direction. Each row of through holes includes at least two spaced though holes. The patterned carbon nanotube film is treated with a polymer solution. The patterned carbon nanotube film is shrunk into the carbon nanotube composite film.

Claims

1. A method for making carbon nanotube composite film, comprising:

providing an original carbon nanotube film comprising a plurality of carbon nanotubes joined end to end by van der Waals attractive force and substantially extending along a first direction;

forming a patterned carbon nanotube film by patterning the original carbon nanotube film to define at least one row of through holes arranged in the original carbon nanotube film along the first direction, each row of through holes comprising at least two spaced though holes; and

treating the patterned carbon nanotube film with a polymer solution such that the patterned carbon nanotube film is shrunk into the carbon nanotube composite film.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein the patterning the original carbon nanotube film comprises using a laser beam or an electron beam to irradiate the original carbon nanotube film.

3. The method of claim 1, wherein a shape of each through hole is a circle, ellipse, triangle, or quadrangle.

4. The method of claim 1, wherein a shape of each through hole is a rectangle, and a space between adjacent through holes is larger than or equal to 0.1 millimeters.

5. The method of claim 1, wherein a shape of each through hole is a rectangle having sides larger than 0.1 millimeters.

6. The method of claim 1, wherein the patterning the original carbon nanotube film comprises forming a plurality of through holes arranged into a plurality of rows of through holes along the first direction in the original carbon nanotube film.

The method of claim 6, wherein the plurality of through holes in a second direction are arranged in columns, and the plurality of through holes in a same column are spaced from each other, an angle between the first direction and the second direction is larger than 0 degrees and smaller or equal to 90 degrees.

8. The method of claim 7, wherein a length in the first direction of each through hole is larger than a space along the second direction between adjacent through holes.

9. The method of claim 7, wherein a space along the second direction between adjacent through holes is larger than a length in the second direction of each through hole.

10. The method of claim 1, wherein the treating the patterned carbon nanotube film further comprises:

suspending the patterned carbon nanotube film to obtain a suspended patterned carbon nanotube film;

applying the polymer solution on the suspended patterned carbon nanotube film to soak the patterned carbon nanotube film, thus shrinking the patterned carbon nanotube film into a treated patterned carbon nanotube film; and

solidifying the polymer solution on the treated patterned carbon nanotube film.

11. The method of claim 10, wherein the polymer solution is obtained by dissolving a polymer material in a solvent.

12. The method of claim 11, wherein the patterned carbon nanotube film is shrunk due to an interfacial tension of the solvent in the polymer solution.

13. The method of claim 11, wherein the polymer material is infiltrated into the patterned carbon nanotube film.

14. The method of claim 11, wherein the solvent is selected from the group consisting of water, ethanol, methanol, acetone, dichloroethane, chloroform, or combinations thereof.

15. The method of claim 11, wherein the polymer material is a transparent material.

16. The method of claim 1, wherein a concentration of the polymer solution is in a range from about 0.1 wt % to about 1 wt %.

The method of claim 1, wherein the polymer solution comprises a polymer material, the polymer material is selected from the group consisting of epoxy resin, polyolefin resin, acrylic resin, polyamide, polyurethane, polycarbonate, polyacetal resin, polyethylene terephthalate, polymethyl methacrylate, silicone resin, and any combination thereof.
