Abstract
Codling moth, Cydia pomonella, (L.), is a cosmopolitan pest of the apple, potentially causing damage to circa 80% of the fruit. Disclosed here are use of extract of Ginkgo biloba, or its synthetic metabolites for preventing or treating apple feeding and infestation by neonate larvae of codling moth.

A method for preventing infestation of a plant by a pest, said method comprising (a) administering a composition to said plant, wherein said composition comprises a molecule derived from a tissue of ginkgo or synthesized in an artificial process, said molecule being selected from the group consisting of alkylphenol, ginkgolide and bilobalide, said molecule being present in said composition in an amount effective in deterring moth infestation.

18. A method for preventing infestation of a plant by a pest, said method comprising modifying said plant genetically such that said plant express a molecule selected from the group consisting of alkylphenol, ginkgolide and bilobalide.

A method for controlling growth of a pathogenic organism, said method comprising exposing said pathogenic organism to a composition obtained from a tissue of Ginkgo plant, wherein said composition comprises at least one compound selected from the group consisting of alkylphenol, ginkgolide and bilobalide, and wherein said composition does not contain significant amount of kaempferol or quercetin.
