Abstract

Codling moth, Cydia pomonella, (L.), is a cosmopolitan pest of the apple, potentially causing damage to circa 80% of the fruit. Disclosed here are use of extract of Ginkgo biloba, or its synthetic metabolites for preventing or treating apple feeding and infestation by neonate larvae of codling moth.

Claims

1. A composition comprising a molecule derived from a tissue of ginkgo or synthesized in an artificial process, said molecule being selected from the group consisting of alkylphenol, ginkgolide and bilobalide, said molecule being present in said composition in an amount effective in deterring moth infestation, wherein said composition does not contain significant amount of kaempferol or quercetin.

2. The composition of claim 1, wherein the composition is prepared from a tissue of ginkgo and wherein one or more components that promote fruit infestation by codling moth have been removed from said composition.

3. The composition of claim 1, further comprising wax.

4. The composition of claim 1, wherein the composition is in the form of a spray, a mist, or an aerosol.

5. The composition of claim 1, wherein said composition comprises an alkylphenol and said alkylphenol is present in said composition at a concentration of from about 2 mg/ml to about 5 mg/ml.

6. The composition of claim 5, wherein said alkylphenol molecule is a ginkgolic acid.

7. The composition of claim 6, wherein said ginkgolic acid is a saturated ginkgolic acid.

8. The composition of claim 6, wherein the ginkgolic acid is ginkgolic acid 15:

9. The composition of claim 1, wherein said composition comprises ginkgolide B and said ginkgolide B is present in said composition at a concentration of at least about 10 mg/ml.

10. The composition of claim 1, wherein said composition comprises a bilobalide and said bilobalide is present in said composition at a concentration of from about 0.1 mg/ml to about 10 mg/ml.

11. A method for preventing infestation of a plant by a pest, said method comprising (a) administering a composition to said plant, wherein said composition comprises a molecule derived from a tissue of ginkgo or synthesized in an artificial process, said molecule being selected from the group consisting of alkylphenol, ginkgolide and bilobalide, said molecule being present in said composition in an amount effective in deterring moth infestation.

12. The method of claim 11, wherein the pest is an insect.

13. The method of claim 11, wherein the pest is a codling moth.

14. The method of claim 11, wherein said composition comprises an alkylphenol, said alkylphenol being present in said composition at a concentration of from about 2 mg/ml to about 5 mg/ml.

15. The method of claim 14, wherein said composition comprises ginkgolic acid 15:

16. The method of claim 11, wherein said composition comprises ginkgolide B, said ginkgolide B being present in said composition at a concentration of at least about 10 mg/ml.

17. The method of claim 11, wherein said composition comprises a bilobalide, said bilobalide being present in said composition at a concentration of from about 0.1 mg/ml to about 10 mg/ml.

18. A method for preventing infestation of a plant by a pest, said method comprising modifying said plant genetically such that said plant express a molecule selected from the group consisting of alkylphenol, ginkgolide and bilobalide.

19. A method for controlling growth of a pathogenic organism, said method comprising exposing said pathogenic organism to a composition obtained from a tissue of Ginkgo plant, wherein said composition comprises at least one compound selected from the group consisting of alkylphenol, ginkgolide and bilobalide, and wherein said composition does not contain significant amount of kaempferol or quercetin.

20. The method of claim 19, wherein the pathogenic organism is a codling moth.
