Abstract

A physiological monitoring system may process a physiological signal such a photoplethysmograph signal from a subject. The system may determine physiological information, such as a physiological rate, from the physiological signal. The system may use search techniques and qualification techniques to determine one or more initialization parameters. The initialization parameters may be used to calculate and qualify a physiological rate. The system may use signal conditioning to reduce noise in the physiological signal and to improve the determination of physiological information. The system may use qualification techniques to confirm determined physiological parameters. The system may also use autocorrelation techniques, cross-correlation techniques, fast start techniques, and/or reference waveforms when processing the physiological signal.

Claims

1. A subject monitoring system for determining physiological information of a subject, comprising:

a sensor configured to generate an intensity signal, wherein the sensor detects light attenuated by the subject; and

processing equipment coupled to the sensor, wherein the processing equipment is configured to;

determine an algorithm setting based on the intensity signal; and

determine a value indicative of a physiological rate of the subject based on the intensity signal and based on the algorithm setting, wherein the processing equipment configured to determine the value indicative of the physiological rate is further configured to;

perform a correlation calculation; and

filter a signal based on the algorithm setting, wherein the signal is based on the intensity signal.

2. The system of claim 1, wherein the processing equipment is further configured to perform an autocorrelation calculation based on the intensity signal.

3. The system of claim 1, wherein the processing equipment is further configured to perform a bandpass filtering calculation, and wherein the configuration of the bandpass filter is based on the algorithm setting.

4. The system of claim 1, wherein the processing equipment is further configured to:

perform an autocorrelation calculation based on the intensity signal to generate an autocorrelation signal; and

perform a bandpass filtering calculation on the autocorrelation signal.

5. The system of claim 1, wherein the processing equipment is further configured to:

generate a correlation signal based on the correlation calculation;

generate a threshold based on the correlation signal; and

identify threshold crossings.

6. The system of claim 5, wherein the processing equipment is further configured to generate the threshold based on the correlation signal and based on the algorithm setting.

7. The system of claim 5, wherein the processing equipment is further configured to determine the value indicative of a physiological rate based on a difference associated with at least two threshold crossings.

8. The system of claim 1, wherein the intensity signal is a photoplethysmograph signal and wherein the processing equipment is further configured to:

determine the algorithm setting based on the intensity signal comprises using a first method; and

determine the value indicative of the physiological rate comprises using a second method, wherein the first method is different than the second method, and wherein the value indicative of the physiological rate is a value indicative of a pulse rate.

9. A processing module for determining physiological information of a subject, wherein the processing module is configured to:

receive an intensity signal from a detector, wherein the detector detects light attenuated by the subject;

determine an algorithm setting based on the intensity signal; and

determine a value indicative of a physiological rate of the subject based on the intensity signal and based on the algorithm setting, wherein the processing module configured to determine the value indicative of the physiological rate is further configured to;

perform a correlation calculation; and

filter a signal based on the algorithm setting, wherein the signal is based on the intensity signal.

10. The processing module of claim 9, further configured to perform an autocorrelation based on the intensity signal.

11. The processing module of claim 9, further configured to perform a bandpass filtering calculation, wherein the configuration of the bandpass filter is based on the algorithm setting.

12. The processing module of claim 9, further configured to:

perform an autocorrelation calculation based on the intensity signal to generate an autocorrelation signal; and

perform a bandpass filtering calculation on the autocorrelation signal.

13. The processing module of claim 9, further configured to:

generate a correlation signal;

generate a threshold based on the correlation signal; and

identify threshold crossings.

14. The processing module of claim 13, further configured to generate the threshold based on the correlation signal and based on the algorithm setting.

15. The processing module of claim 13, further configured to determine a difference associated with at least two threshold crossings.

16. The processing module of claim 9, wherein the intensity signal is a photoplethysmograph signal, the processing module further configured to:

determine the algorithm setting based on the intensity signal using a first method; and

determine the value indicative of the physiological rate comprises using a second method, wherein the first method is different than the second method, and wherein the value indicative of the physiological rate is a value indicative of a pulse rate.

17. A method for determining physiological information of a subject, comprising:

receiving an intensity signal from a detector, which detects light attenuated by the subject;

determining an algorithm setting based on the intensity signal; and

determining, using processing equipment, a value indicative of a physiological rate of the subject based on the intensity signal and based on the algorithm setting, wherein determining the value indicative of the physiological rate comprises;

performing a correlation calculation; and

filtering a signal based on the algorithm setting, wherein the signal is based on the intensity signal.

18. The method of claim 17, wherein performing the correlation calculation comprises performing an autocorrelation based on the intensity signal.

19. The method of claim 17, wherein filtering the signal based on the algorithm setting comprises performing a bandpass filtering calculation, wherein the configuration of the bandpass filter is based on the algorithm setting.

20. The method of claim 17, wherein performing the correlation calculation comprises performing an autocorrelation calculation based on the intensity signal to generate an autocorrelation signal and wherein filtering the signal comprises performing a bandpass filtering calculation on the autocorrelation signal.

21. The method of claim 17, wherein the correlation calculation generates a correlation signal and wherein determining the value indicative of the physiological rate comprises:

generating a threshold based on the correlation signal; and

identifying threshold crossings.

22. The method of claim 21, wherein generating the threshold based on the correlation signal comprises generating the threshold based on the correlation signal and based on the algorithm setting.

23. The method of claim 21, wherein determining the value indicative of a physiological rate further comprises determining a difference associated with at least two threshold crossings.

24. The method of claim 17, wherein determining the algorithm setting based on the intensity signal comprises using a first method, wherein determining the value indicative of the physiological rate comprises using a second method, wherein the first method is different than the second method, wherein the intensity signal is a photoplethysmograph signal, and wherein the value indicative of the physiological rate is a value indicative of a pulse rate.

25. A computer-readable medium for use in determining physiological information of a subject, the computer-readable medium having computer program instructions recorded thereon for:

receiving an intensity signal from a detector, which detects light attenuated by the subject;

determining an algorithm setting based on the intensity signal; and

determining a value indicative of a physiological rate of the subject based on the intensity signal and based on the algorithm setting, wherein determining the value indicative of the physiological rate comprises;

performing a correlation calculation; and

filtering a signal based on the algorithm setting, wherein the signal is based on the intensity signal.

26. The computer-readable medium of claim 25, having further computer program instructions recorded thereon for performing an autocorrelation based on the intensity signal.

27. The computer-readable medium of claim 25, having further computer program instructions recorded thereon for performing a bandpass filtering calculation, wherein the configuration of the bandpass filter is based on the algorithm setting.

28. The computer-readable medium of claim 25, having further computer program instructions recorded thereon for:

performing an autocorrelation calculation based on the intensity signal to generate an autocorrelation signal; and

performing a bandpass filtering calculation on the autocorrelation signal.

29. The computer-readable medium of claim 25, having further computer program instructions recorded thereon for:

generating a correlation signal based on the correlation calculation;

generating a threshold based on the correlation signal; and

identifying threshold crossings.

30. The computer-readable medium of claim 29, having further computer program instructions recorded thereon for generating the threshold based on the correlation signal and based on the algorithm setting.

31. The computer-readable medium of claim 29, having further computer program instructions recorded thereon for determining a difference associated with at least two threshold crossings.

32. The computer-readable medium of claim 25, wherein the intensity signal is a photoplethysmograph signal, the computer-readable medium having further computer program instructions recorded thereon for:

determining the algorithm setting based on the intensity signal using a first method; and

determining the value indicative of the physiological rate using a second method, wherein the first method is different than the second method, and wherein the value indicative of the physiological rate is a value indicative of a pulse rate.
