Abstract

A physiological monitoring system may process a physiological signal such a photoplethysmograph signal from a subject. The system may determine physiological information, such as a physiological rate, from the physiological signal. The system may use search techniques and qualification techniques to determine one or more initialization parameters. The initialization parameters may be used to calculate and qualify a physiological rate. The system may use signal conditioning to reduce noise in the physiological signal and to improve the determination of physiological information. The system may use qualification techniques to confirm determined physiological parameters. The system may also use autocorrelation techniques, cross-correlation techniques, fast start techniques, and/or reference waveforms when processing the physiological signal.

Claims

1. A subject monitoring system for determining physiological information of a subject, comprising:

a sensor configured to generate an intensity signal, wherein the sensor detects light attenuated by the subject; and

processing equipment coupled to the sensor, wherein the processing equipment is configured to;

determine a value indicative of a physiological rate of the subject;

select positive values based on the intensity signal;

select negative values based on the intensity signal;

analyze the positive and negative values; and

determine whether to qualify the value indicative of the physiological rate of the subject based on the analysis of the positive and negative values.

2. The system of claim 1, wherein the processing equipment is further configured to condition the intensity signal using a detrending calculation prior to selecting the two signal segments.

3. The system of claim 1, wherein the processing equipment is further configured to:

calculate a cross-correlation sequence based on the intensity signal and a cross-correlation waveform; and

select the two signal segments from the cross-correlation sequence.

4. The system of claim 1, wherein the processing equipment is further configured to:

calculate a statistical property of the positive values;

calculate a statistical property of the negative values;

compare the statistical properties; and

determine whether to qualify the value indicative of the physiological rate based on the comparison of the statistical properties.

5. The system of claim 1, wherein the processing equipment is further configured to not use the value indicative of the physiological rate in calculating a display rate when the value is not qualified.

6. The system of claim 1, wherein the processing equipment is further configured to filter the value indicative of the physiological rate in a rate filter, wherein a filter weight associated with the value is decreased when the value is not qualified.

7. The system of claim 1, wherein the intensity signal is a photoplethysmograph signal and wherein the value indicative of the physiological rate is a value indicative of a pulse rate.

8. A processing module for determining physiological information of a subject, wherein the processing module is configured to:

receive an intensity signal from a detector, wherein the detector detects light attenuated by the subject;

determine a value indicative of a physiological rate of the subject;

select positive values based on the intensity signal;

select negative values based on the intensity signal;

analyze the positive and negative values; and

determine whether to qualify the value indicative of the physiological rate of the subject based on the analysis of the positive and negative values.

9. The processing module of claim 8, further configured to condition the intensity signal using a detrending calculation prior to selecting the two signal segments.

10. The processing module of claim 8, further configured to:

calculate a cross-correlation sequence based on the intensity signal and a cross-correlation waveform; and

select the two signal segments from the cross-correlation sequence.

11. The processing module of claim 8, further configured to:

calculate a statistical property of the positive values;

calculate a statistical property of the negative values;

compare the statistical properties; and

determine whether to qualify the value indicative of the physiological rate based on the comparison of the statistical properties.

12. The processing module of claim 8, further configured to not use the value indicative of the physiological rate in calculating a display rate when the value is not qualified.

13. The processing module of claim 8, further configured to filter the value indicative of the physiological rate in a rate filter, wherein a filter weight associated with the value is decreased when the value is not qualified.

14. The processing module of claim 8, wherein the intensity signal is a photoplethysmograph signal and wherein the value indicative of the physiological rate is a value indicative of a pulse rate.

15. A method for processing physiological information of a subject, comprising:

receiving an intensity signal from a detector, which detects light attenuated by the subject;

determining a value indicative of a physiological rate of the subject;

selecting positive values based on the intensity signal;

selecting negative values based on the intensity signal;

analyzing the positive and negative values; and

determining, using processing equipment, whether to qualify the value indicative of the physiological rate of the subject based on the analysis of the positive and negative values.

16. The method of claim 15, further comprising conditioning the intensity signal using a detrending calculation prior to selecting the two signal segments.

17. The method of claim 15, further comprising calculating a cross-correlation sequence based on the intensity signal and a cross-correlation waveform, wherein selecting the two signal segments based on the intensity signal comprises selecting the two signal segments from the cross-correlation sequence.

18. The method of claim 15, wherein analyzing the positive and negative values comprises:

calculating a statistical property of the positive values;

calculating a statistical property of the negative values; and

comparing the statistical properties, wherein determining whether to qualify the value indicative of the physiological rate comprises determining whether to qualify the value indicative of the physiological rate based on the comparison of the statistical properties.

19. The method of claim 15, further comprising not using the value indicative of the physiological rate in calculating a display rate when the value is not qualified.

20. The method of claim 15, further comprising filtering the value indicative of the physiological rate in a rate filter, wherein a filter weight associated with the value is decreased when the value is not qualified.

21. The method of claim 15, wherein the intensity signal is a photoplethysmograph signal and wherein the value indicative of the physiological rate is a value indicative of a pulse rate.

22. A computer-readable medium for use in determining physiological information of a subject, the computer-readable medium having computer program instructions recorded thereon for:

receiving an intensity signal from a detector, which detects light attenuated by the subject;

determining a value indicative of a physiological rate of the subject;

selecting positive values based on the intensity signal;

selecting negative values based on the intensity signal;

analyzing the positive and negative values; and

determining whether to qualify the value indicative of the physiological rate of the subject based on the analysis of the positive and negative values.

23. The computer-readable medium of claim 22, having further computer program instructions recorded thereon for conditioning the intensity signal using a detrending calculation prior to selecting the two signal segments.

24. The computer-readable medium of claim 22, having further computer program instructions recorded thereon for calculating a cross-correlation sequence based on the intensity signal and a cross-correlation waveform, wherein selecting the two signal segments based on the intensity signal comprises selecting the two signal segments from the cross-correlation sequence.

25. The computer-readable medium of claim 22, having further computer program instructions recorded thereon for:

calculating a statistical property of the positive values;

calculating a statistical property of the negative values; and

comparing the statistical properties, wherein determining whether to qualify the value indicative of the physiological rate comprises determining whether to qualify the value indicative of the physiological rate based on the comparison of the statistical properties.

26. The computer-readable medium of claim 22, having further computer program instructions recorded thereon for not using the value indicative of the physiological rate in calculating a display rate when the value is not qualified.

27. The computer-readable medium of claim 22, having further computer program instructions recorded thereon for filtering the value indicative of the physiological rate in a rate filter, wherein a filter weight associated with the value is decreased when the value is not qualified.

28. The computer-readable medium of claim 22, wherein the intensity signal is a photoplethysmograph signal and wherein the value indicative of the physiological rate is a value indicative of a pulse rate.
