Abstract

An expansible ear canal insert for treating TMJ disorders and headaches which acts directly on the TMJ and associated ligament and muscle structures to reduce stress and loads placed on the articulator disc located between the temporal bone and the mandible, as well as supportive muscles and ligaments near the TMJ. The insert is adapted to expand by application of body heat. In the expanded condition, the insert provides support to the TMJ and associated ligament and muscle structures.

Claims

1. A prosthesis adapted to be inserted into an ear canal for supporting a joint between a mandible and a corresponding temporal bone, the ear canal having an entrance and an isthmus located at a position remote from the entrance, the prosthesis comprising:

a deformable body including a sound transmission channel extending along the length of the deformable body, at least one support member disposed radially outward from sound transmission channel, the deformable body having a length adapted to extend substantially between the entrance and the isthmus of the ear canal, at least one of the deformable body and the support member being adapted to expand upon application of body heat such that the deformable body or the support member conforms in pressing relation against the walls of the ear canal.

2. The prosthesis as recited in claim 1, wherein said at least one support member comprises an expansible endoskeleton frame.

3. The prosthesis as recited in claim 2, wherein the endoskeleton frame is formed from a shape-memory alloy.

4. The prosthesis as recited in claim 2, wherein the expansible endoskeleton has a serpentine ring structure.

5. A prosthesis as recited in claim 1, wherein said at least one support member comprises a substantially solid wall sound transmission bore.

6. A prosthesis as recited in claim 5, wherein an expansible endoskeleton frame is disposed about the sound transmission bore.

7. The prosthesis as recited in claim 6, wherein the endoskeleton frame is formed from a shape-memory alloy.

8. The prosthesis as recited in claim 6, wherein the expansible endoskeleton has a serpentine ring structure.

9. The prosthesis as recited in claim 1, wherein the deformable body comprises a heat expansible foam adapted to expand upon exposure to body temperature.

10. The prosthesis as recited in claim 9, wherein the heat expansible foam includes a heat expansible filler adapted to expand upon exposure to body temperature.

21. A method of delivering an agent to a subject in need thereof, the method comprising:

(a) applying the agent to the prosthesis of claim 1, 11, or 20; and

(b) inserting the prosthesis into an ear canal of the subject.

22. The method of claim 21, wherein the prosthesis facilitates transdermal delivery of the agent to the subject.

23. The method of claim 21, wherein the agent is selected from the group consisting of a systemic medication, a medication for treating headache, a medication for treating TMJ, and a medication for treating ear infection.

24. The method of claim 21 further comprising:

(c) removing the prosthesis from the ear canal of the subject;

(d) re-applying the agent to the prosthesis; and

(e) re-inserting the prosthesis into the ear canal of the subject;

25. The method of claim 24, wherein a time interval of about 1 hour to about 48 hours occurs between applying and re-applying the agent to the prosthesis.

26. The method of claim 25, wherein a time interval of about 1 hour to about 24 hours occurs between applying and re-applying the agent to the prosthesis.

27. The method of claim 21, wherein applying the agent to the prosthesis includes coating a portion of the deformable body with the agent.

11. A prosthesis adapted to be inserted into an ear canal for treating discomfort in a joint between a mandible and a corresponding temporal bone, the ear canal having an entrance and an isthmus located at a position remote from the entrance, the prosthesis comprising:

a deformable body including a sound transmission channel extending along the length of the deformable body, an expansible endoskeleton frame embedded within the deformable body, the endoskeleton frame defining a support member extending at least partially along the length of the prosthesis in radially outward relation to the sound transmission channel, the deformable body having a length adapted to extend substantially between the entrance and the isthmus of the ear canal, the endoskeleton frame being adapted to undergo a phase change and to expand and increase in rigidity upon application of body heat, the deformable body being adapted to conform in pressing relation against the walls of the ear canal upon expansion of the endoskeleton frame.

12. The prosthesis as recited in claim 11, wherein the endoskeleton frame is formed from a shape-memory alloy.

13. The prosthesis as recited in claim 12, wherein the expansible endoskeleton has a serpentine ring structure.

14. A prosthesis as recited in claim 11, further comprising a substantially solid wall contoured sound transmission bore disposed at the interior of the endoskeleton frame, the interior of the sound transmission bore defining the sound transmission channel.

15. A method of treating discomfort in a joint between a mandible and a corresponding temporal bone, the method comprising:

inserting a prosthesis into an ear canal, the ear canal having an entrance and an isthmus located at a position remote from the entrance, the prosthesis comprising;

a deformable body including a sound transmission channel extending along the length of the deformable body, at least one support member extending at least partially along the length of the prosthesis in radially outward relation to the sound transmission channel, the deformable body extending substantially between the entrance and the isthmus of the ear canal; and

expanding at least one of the deformable body and the support member within the ear canal such that the deformable body or the support member conforms in pressing relation against the walls of the ear canal with the sound transmission channel held in an open condition.

16. The method as recited in claim 15, wherein said at least one support member comprises an expansible endoskeleton frame.

17. The method as recited in claim 16, wherein the endoskeleton frame is formed from a shape-memory alloy.

18. The method as recited in claim 16, wherein the expansible endoskeleton has a serpentine ring structure.

19. The method as recited in claim 15, wherein said at least one support member comprises a substantially solid wall sound transmission bore.

20. A prosthesis adapted to be inserted into an ear canal for supporting a joint between a mandible and a corresponding temporal bone, the ear canal having an entrance and an isthmus located at a position remote from the entrance, the prosthesis comprising:

a deformable body including a sound transmission channel extending along the length of the deformable body, the deformable body having a length adapted to extend substantially between the entrance and the isthmus of the ear canal, the deformable body being adapted to expand upon application of body heat such that the deformable body conforms in pressing relation against the walls of the ear canal.
