Abstract

An advertising system generates customized advertising for social network members based on search queries. The ads results are personalized based on member actions taken, content reviews, selections, etc.

Claims

1. A method of presenting advertising content to a member of a social networking site with a computing system comprising:

(a) collecting and processing first ratings data for a first member with the computing system including a first rating for a first content source and/or a first rating for a first item;

(b) receiving and processing a first query from said first member of said social network directed to a first subject;

(c) with a recommender system, correlating said first subject to one or more of said first content source and/or said first item with the computing system based on said first rating;

(d) based on results of step (d) customizing a set of search result listings presented to said first member responsive to said first topic, such that said set of search result listings include recommended content identified by a recommender system from said first content source and/or related to said first item;

(e) presenting a set of advertisements for said set of search result listings to said first member which set of advertisements are also determined by a recommender system to be correlated to said first topic and/or said recommended content.

2. The method of claim 1 wherein step (a) is performed with first ratings data from a separate website.

3. The method of claim 1 wherein said set of search result listings recommended content includes at least one listing identifying another second member.

4. The method of claim 1 wherein said set of search result listings includes at least one listing identifying content or items rated by a second member of said social network identified as a friend of said first member.

5. The method of claim 1 wherein step (c) is performed by mapping said first subject to a matrix of topic ratings maintained for said first member at said social network site.

6. A method of presenting advertising content to a user at a social networking site with a computing system comprising:

(a) presenting first content to a first member of a social network within a graphical interface, which first content is automatically determined by the computing system for said first member based in part on;

i) first interest information identified explicitly by said first member; and

ii) second interest information determined implicitly from actions take by said first member;

(b) collecting and processing first ratings data provided explicitly by said first member with the computing system including for a first content source;

 

wherein a second member of said social network can be designated by said first member as a friend of said first member;

(c) receiving and processing a query from said second member of said social network directed to a first topic;

(d) presenting a set of search results to said second member responsive to said first topic, which search results include recommended content derived from said first content source;

(e) automatically identifying a first advertisement correlated to said first content source adopted by said first member;

(f) presenting said first advertisement within said graphical interface to said second member as part of said recommended content;

wherein said first advertisement includes content derived from said first content source.

7. The method of claim 6 wherein said first content source is another social network member.

8. The method of claim 6 wherein said first content source is a website.

9. The method of claim 6 wherein said first content source is an author of audio or video content.

10. The method of claim 6 wherein said first content source is an author of articles or stories.

11. The method of claim 6 wherein said first content source is an advertiser.

12. The method of claim 6 wherein said first content source is a data feed.

13. The method of claim 6, where said second member can specify a rating for said first advertisement.

14. The method of claim 6 wherein said first ratings data includes a time weighting.

15. The method of claim 6 wherein said first ratings data includes a useage frequency weighting.

16. The method of claim 6 wherein said first advertisement presented to said second member is based on endorsements of advertisements made by said first member.

17. The method of claim 6 wherein said first member and said second member are logically grouped for purposes of collecting ratings and recommending advertisements.
