Abstract

Technologies and implementations for selectively synchronizing data with a tethered device are generally disclosed.

Claims

1. A method for managing data usage for a mobile device, the method comprising:

receiving a request for data communication from the mobile device;

determining a type of network being utilized by the mobile device;

determining a type of data to be communicated by the received request for data communication; and

managing data communication based, at least in part, on the determined type of network or the determined type of data.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein determining the type of network comprises determining whether the network is a cellular network.

3. The method of claim 1, wherein:

determining the type of network comprises determining whether the network is any of a wired network or a wireless local area network (WiFi); and

managing data communication further comprises accepting the received request for data communication.

7. The method of claim 1, wherein managing data communication comprises adjusting data communication to accommodate data communication bandwidth based, at least in part, on the determined type of network or the determined type of data.

8. The method of claim 1, wherein managing data communication comprises determining a data limit associated with the mobile device.

10. The method of claim 1, wherein:

determining the type of network being utilized by the mobile device comprises determining that the network is a cellular network;

determining the type of data to be communicated comprises determining a file size of the data to be communicated; and

managing data communication further comprises determining a data limit associated with the mobile device and the cellular network, and rejecting the received request for data communication based, at least in part, on the file size exceeding the data limit.

31. The method of claim 1, wherein the request for data communication from the mobile device indicates a request for two-way data communication.

32. The method of claim 1, wherein determining the type of network is based, at least in part, on the Service Set Identifier (SSID) associated with the mobile device.

33. The method of claim 32, wherein determining the type of network based, at least in part, on the SSID associated with the mobile device further comprises determining that the SSID includes keywords associated with a cellular network.

11. A machine-readable non-transitory medium having stored therein instructions that, when executed by one or more processors, operatively enable a data communication manager to perform operations comprising:

receiving a request for data communication from a mobile device;

determining a type of network being utilized by the mobile device;

determining a type of data to be communicated by the received request for data communication; and

managing data communication based, at least in part, on the determined type of network or the determined type of data.

12. The machine-readable non-transitory medium of claim 11, wherein determining a type of network comprises determining whether the network is a cellular network.

13. The machine-readable non-transitory medium of claim 11, wherein:

determining the type of network comprises determining whether the network is a wired network or a wireless local area network (WiFi); and

managing data communication further comprises accepting the received request for data communication.

17. The machine-readable non-transitory medium of claim 11, wherein managing data communication comprises adjusting data communication to accommodate data communication bandwidth based, at least in part, on the determined type of network or the determined type of data.

18. The machine-readable non-transitory medium of claim 11, wherein managing data communication comprises determining a data limit associated with the mobile device.

20. The machine-readable non-transitory medium of claim 11, wherein:

determining a type of network comprises determining that the network is a cellular network;

determining the type of data to be communicated comprises determining a file size of the data to be communicated; and

managing data communication further comprises determining a data limit associated with the mobile device and the cellular network, and rejecting the received request for data communication based, at least in part, on the file size exceeding the data limit.

21. A system for managing data usage for a mobile device, comprising:

a processor;

a data communication manager communicatively coupled to the processor; and

a machine-readable non-transitory medium having stored therein instructions that, when executed by the processor, operatively enable the data communication manager to perform operations comprising;

receiving a request for data communication from a mobile device;

determining a type of network being utilized by the mobile device;

determining a type of data to be communicated by the received request for data communication; and

managing data communication based, at least in part, on the determined type of network or the determined type of data.

22. The system of claim 21, wherein determining a type of network comprises determining whether the network is a cellular network.

23. The system of claim 21, wherein:

determining a type of network comprises determining whether the network is a wired network or a wireless local area network (WiFi); and

managing data communication further comprises accepting the received request for data communication.

27. The system of claim 21, wherein managing data communication comprises adjusting data communication to accommodate data communication bandwidth based, at least in part, on the determined type of network or the determined type of data.

28. The system of claim 21, wherein managing data communication comprises determining a data limit associated with the mobile device.

30. The system of claim 21, wherein:

determining a type of network comprises determining that the network is a cellular network;

determining the type of data to be communicated comprises determining a file size of the data to be communicated; and

managing data communication further comprises determining a data limit associated with the mobile device and the cellular network, and rejecting the received request for data communication based, at least in part, on the file size exceeding the data limit.
