Abstract

An austenitic iron-based alloy containing manganese and at most 10% by weight and in particular at most 5% by weight nickel, based in each case on the overall weight of the iron-based alloy.

Claims

1. An austenitic iron-based alloy containing manganese and at most 10% by weight nickel, based on the overall weight of the iron-based alloy.

2. The austenitic iron-based alloy as claimed in claim 1, wherein the manganese content is 8 to 25% by weight based on the overall weight of the iron-based alloy.

3. The austenitic iron-based alloy as claimed in claim 1, wherein, in addition to iron and manganese, it contains at least one of the elements selected from the group consisting of C, Cr, Si, Nb, Mo, W and N.

4. The austenitic iron-based alloy as claimed in claim 1, wherein it contains substantially the following elements:

C;

0.05 to 0.7% by weight,

Cr;

8 to 25% by weight,

Mn;

8 to 25% by weight,

Ni;

≦

10% by weight,

Si;

0.1 to 4.5% by weight,

Nb;

0.1 to 4.5% by weight,

Mo;

≦

5% by weight,

W;

≦

7% by weight,

N;

0.05 to 2% by weight,

Fe;

ad 100% by weight.

5. The austenitic iron-based alloy as claimed in claim 1, wherein it contains substantially the following elements:

C;

0.25 to 0.35% by weight,

Cr;

15 to 16.5% by weight,

Mn;

15 to 17% by weight,

Si;

0.5 to 1.2% by weight,

Nb;

0.5 to 1.2% by weight,

W;

2 to 3% by weight,

N;

0.2 to 0.4% by weight,

Fe;

ad 100% by weight, with the iron-based alloy being substantially free of nickel.

6. A component for turbocharger applications, having an exhaust-gas temperature of up to 1050°

C. consisting essentially of an iron-based alloy as claimed in claim 1.

11. A process for producing a component made of an iron-based alloy as claimed in claim 1 comprising:

a. hot working the entire article to a first geometry which approximates the desired final geometry except for portions of the article which are at least about 25% oversized compared to the desired final geometry;

b. heat treating the article to increase the grain size;

c. warm working the oversized portions of the article to final shape

whereby the warm-worked portions of the article have enhanced tensile properties and the hot-worked portions of the article have enhanced creep properties by a pressure die casting process.

13. An austenitic iron-based alloy as in claim 1, containing manganese and at most 5% by weight nickel based on the overall weight of the iron-based alloy.

14. The austenitic iron-based alloy as claimed in claim 1, wherein the manganese content is 12 to 20% by weight based on the overall weight of the iron-based alloy.

7. An exhaust-gas turbocharger, comprising at least one component consisting essentially of an iron-based alloy containing manganese and at most 10% by weight nickel, based on the overall weight of the iron-based alloy.

8. The exhaust-gas turbocharger as claimed in claim 7, wherein the manganese content in the iron-based alloy is 8 to 25% by weight based on the overall weight of the iron-based alloy.

9. The exhaust-gas turbocharger as claimed in claim 7, wherein the austenitic iron-based alloy contains substantially the following elements:

C;

0.05 to 0.7% by weight,

Cr;

8 to 25% by weight,

Mn;

8 to 25% by weight,

Ni;

≦

10% by weight,

Si;

0.1 to 4.5% by weight,

Nb;

0.1 to 4.5% by weight,

Mo;

≦

5% by weight,

W;

≦

7% by weight,

N;

0.05 to 2% by weight, and

Fe;

ad 100% by weight.

10. The exhaust-gas turbocharger as claimed in claim 7, wherein the austenitic iron-based alloy contains substantially the following elements:

C;

0.25 to 0.35% by weight,

Cr;

15 to 16.5% by weight,

Mn;

15 to 17% by weight,

Si;

0.5 to 1.2% by weight,

Nb;

0.5 to 1.2% by weight,

W;

2 to 3% by weight,

N;

0.2 to 0.4% by weight,

Fe;

ad 100% by weight, with the iron-based alloy being substantially free of nickel.

15. The exhaust-gas turbocharger of claim 7, comprising at least one component consisting essentially of an iron-based alloy containing manganese and at most 10% by weight nickel, based in each case on the overall weight of the iron-based alloy.

16. The exhaust-gas turbocharger as claimed in claim 7, wherein the manganese content in the iron-based alloy is 12 to 20% by weight based on the overall weight of the iron-based alloy.

17. The exhaust-gas turbocharger as claimed in claim 7, wherein the austenitic iron-based alloy contains substantially the following elements:

C;

00.2 to 0.5% by weight,

Cr;

12 to 20% by weight,

Mn;

12 to 20% by weight,

Ni;

≦

5% by weight,

Si;

0.5 to 3% by weight,

Nb;

0.5 to 3% by weight,

Mo;

≦

3% by weight,

W;

≦

4% by weight,

N;

0.1 to 1% by weight, and

Fe;

ad 100% by weight.
