Abstract

An infusion device (10) includes one or more of automatic insertion and retraction of an introducer needle (40) and catheter (28), introducer needle safety and extension set. The device (10) can further comprise a top-push button (16) activation feature, a side-push button (402) activation feature or a rotary-button (412) activation feature, and one or more of a manual interlock of an outer barrel and base, and a manual interlock for an extension set top and base. Packaging (500) for an integrated and/or removable inserter with activation button protection is also disclosed.

Claims

1. An infusion device, comprising an inserter that can insert a catheter into a skin surface, comprising:

an infusion device housing, comprising a catheter and a driver for inserting said catheter into a skin surface; and

an infusion device base for rotatably securing said infusion device housing, comprising at least one adhesive layer for releasably securing said infusion device base with said skin surface.

2. An infusion device as claimed in claim 1, further comprising:

an introducer needle and a hub, wherein said driver comprises a push button configured to travel substantially perpendicular to said skin surface and rotate said hub into a release position.

3. An infusion device as claimed in claim 2, wherein:

said hub comprises a retention sear; and

said infusion device housing comprises a slot for slidably receiving said retention sear in said release position.

4. An infusion device as claimed in claim 2, further comprising:

a drive spring to drive said introducer needle and said catheter into said skin surface when said hub is rotated into said release position.

5. An infusion device as claimed in claim 2, wherein said driver is configured to release from base and retract said introducer needle when rotated.

6. An infusion device as claimed in claim 1, further comprising:

an introducer needle and a hub, wherein said hub comprises at least one sear holding said hub in a retracted position and wherein said driver comprises;

a push button configured to travel substantially perpendicular to said skin surface and deflect said sear of said hub into a release position.

7. An infusion device as claimed in claim 6, further comprising:

a drive spring to drive said introducer needle and said catheter into said skin surface when said sear of said hub is deflected into said release position.

8. An infusion device as claimed in claim 6, wherein said driver is configured to release from base and retract said introducer needle when rotated.

9. An infusion device as claimed in claim 1, further comprising:

an introducer needle and a hub, wherein said hub comprises at least one key holding said hub in a retracted position and wherein said driver comprises;

a push button configured to secure said key of said hub and comprising a keyhole, said push button configured to travel substantially parallel to said skin surface and align said keyhole with said key of said hub in a release position.

10. An infusion device as claimed in claim 9, further comprising:

a drive spring to drive said introducer needle and said catheter into said skin surface when said keyhole and said key of said hub are aligned in said release position.

11. An infusion device as claimed in claim 9, wherein said driver is configured to release from base and retract said introducer needle when rotated.

12. An infusion device as claimed in claim 1, further comprising:

an introducer needle and a hub, wherein said housing comprises a slot and said hub comprises at least one sear holding said hub in a retracted position and wherein said driver comprises;

a rotatable button configured to rotate said sear of said hub into alignment with said slot for release.

13. An infusion device as claimed in claim 12, further comprising:

a drive spring to drive said introducer needle and said catheter into said skin surface when said sear of said hub is rotated into alignment with said slot in said release position.

14. An infusion device as claimed in claim 12, wherein said driver is configured to release from base and retract said introducer needle when rotated.

15. An infusion device as claimed in claim 1, further comprising a deflectable latch to prevent rotation of said infusion device housing relative to said infusion device base.

16. An infusion device as claimed in claim 1, further comprising:

a tube set connector; and

a deflectable latch to prevent rotation of said tube set connector relative to said infusion device base.

17. An infusion device as claimed in claim 1, further comprising a stabilizer extending from said catheter

18. An infusion device as claimed in claim 1, further comprising:

a packaging element for receiving said infusion device housing, wherein at least one side of said packaging element comprises said infusion device base.

19. An infusion device as claimed in claim 18, wherein said packaging element comprises at least one detent to releasably secure said infusion device housing.

20. A method of placing an infusion device, comprising the steps of:

placing an infusion device base and inserter upon an infusion site; and

pressing a button to insert at least one of a catheter and an introducer needle into said infusion site; and

rotating said inserter to release said inserter from said base and retract said introducer needle.

21. A method of placing an infusion device as claimed in claim 20, wherein said button is configured to travel substantially perpendicular to said skin surface and rotate said inserter into a release position.

22. A method of placing an infusion device as claimed in claim 20, wherein said button is configured to travel substantially perpendicular to said skin surface and deflect said inserter into a release position.

23. A method of placing an infusion device as claimed in claim 20, wherein said button is configured to travel substantially parallel to said skin surface and align said inserter into a release position.

24. A method of placing an infusion device as claimed in claim 20, wherein said button is configured to rotate and rotate said inserter into a release position.
