Abstract

Techniques are described for generating pattern representation images of business intelligence (BI) dashboard objects in a business intelligence (BI) dashboard. In one example, a method includes generating an image that represents a dashboard object in the business intelligence dashboard. The image may be based at least in part on one or more rules defined for metadata associated with the dashboard object. The method may include collecting the data from the dashboard object prior to generating the image. The metadata may include an indication of a type of display comprised in the dashboard object, and the method may further include generating the image with a theme associated with the type of the display. The theme may include one or more styles and one or more color schemes applied to the image.

Claims

1. A method comprising:

generating an image that represents a dashboard object in a business intelligence dashboard,

wherein the image is generated based at least in part on one or more rules defined for metadata associated with the dashboard object.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein the metadata comprise an indication of a type of display comprised in the dashboard object, and the method further comprises generating the image with a theme associated with the type of the display, wherein the theme comprises one or more styles and one or more color schemes applied to the image.

3. The method of claim 2, wherein the type of the display comprises at least one of a business intelligence report, a text document, a list, a chart, a graph, or a dashboard.

4. The method of claim 1, wherein the metadata comprise a number of displays in the dashboard object, and the method further comprises generating the image with one or more image portions representing one or more of the displays, and with a visual representation of the number of displays.

5. The method of claim 1, wherein the metadata comprise one or more types of displays in the dashboard object, and the method further comprises generating the image with one or more contrasting image portions representing each of the one or more types of displays, and with a visual representation of each of the one or more types of displays.

6. The method of claim 1, wherein the metadata comprise a number of tabs of the dashboard object, and the method further comprises generating the image with one or more image portions representing one or more of the tabs, and with a visual representation of the number of tabs.

7. The method of claim 1, wherein the metadata comprise a name of the dashboard object, and the method further comprises generating the image with a visual representation of the name in a color that is based on the name.

8. The method of claim 1, wherein the metadata comprise a length of a name of the dashboard object, and the method further comprises generating the image with a visual representation of the name with a length that is based on the length of the name.

9. The method of claim 1, wherein the metadata comprise one or more of metadata dimensions and metadata measures, and the method further comprises generating the image with one or more vertically oriented, horizontally oriented, or angled lines to represent the metadata dimensions and metadata measures.

10. The method of claim 1, wherein the image is further based at least in part on data comprised within the dashboard object.

11. The method of claim 10, wherein the data comprised within the dashboard object is stored by a server from a previous run of the dashboard object.

12. The method of claim 10, wherein the data comprises a number of pages in the dashboard object, and the method further comprises generating the image with a visual representation of the number of pages.

13. The method of claim 10, wherein the data comprises a data size of a display in the dashboard object, and the method further comprises generating the image with a visual representation of the display with a visual indication of the data size of the display.

14. The method of claim 13, wherein the data size of a display comprises at least one of a range of rows in a list and a size of a crosstab in the dashboard object.

15. A computing system comprising:

one or more processors;

one or more computer-readable data storage devices; and

computer-executable program instructions, stored on the one or more computer-readable data storage devices for execution by the one or more processors, wherein the program instructions comprise;

program instructions for generating an image that represents a dashboard object in a business intelligence dashboard,

wherein the program instructions generate the image based at least in part on one or more rules defined for metadata associated with the dashboard object.

16. The computing system of claim 15, wherein the metadata comprise an indication of a type of display comprised in the dashboard object, wherein the program instructions further comprise:

program instructions for generating the image with a theme associated with the type of the display;

wherein the theme comprises one or more styles and one or more color schemes applied to the image; and

wherein the type of the display comprises at least one of a business intelligence report, a text document, a list, a chart, a graph, or a dashboard.

17. The computing system of claim 15, wherein the image is further based at least in part on data from a previous run of the dashboard object stored by a server as metadata associated with the dashboard object, wherein the program instructions further comprise:

program instructions for generating the image with a visual representation of the data from a previous run of the dashboard object.

18. A computer program product comprising executable instructions stored on a non-transitory computer-readable storage medium, configured for causing one or more programmable processors to:

generate an image that represents a dashboard object in a business intelligence dashboard,

wherein the image is generated based at least in part on one or more rules defined for metadata associated with the dashboard object.

19. The computer program product of claim 18, wherein the metadata comprise an indication of a type of display comprised in the dashboard object, the computer program product further comprising:

program instructions for generating the image with a theme associated with the type of the display;

wherein the theme comprises one or more styles and one or more color schemes applied to the image; and

wherein the type of the display comprises at least one of a business intelligence report, a text document, a list, a chart, a graph, or a dashboard.

20. The computer program product of claim 18, wherein the image is further based at least in part on data from a previous run of the dashboard object stored by a server as metadata associated with the dashboard object, the computer program product further comprising:

program instructions for generating the image with a visual representation of the data from a previous run of the dashboard object.
