Abstract

Wearable apparatus for monitoring various physiological and environmental factors are provided. Real-time, noninvasive health and environmental monitors include a plurality of compact sensors integrated within small, low-profile devices, such as earpiece modules. Physiological and environmental data is collected and wirelessly transmitted into a wireless network, where the data is stored and/or processed.

Claims

1. A network for evaluating the cardiopulmonary functioning of a person, the system comprising:

a portable telecommunication device; and

a sensor module configured to be worn by the person, the sensor module comprising;

at least one physiological sensor configured to sense one or more of the following types of physiological information generated by the person;

pulse rate, blood flow, blood gas levels, body temperature, blood pressure, and intracranial pressure;

at least one motion sensor configured to sense body motion of the person;

a signal processor configured to process signals from the at least one physiological sensor and the at least one motion sensor to generate an assessment of cardiopulmonary functioning of the person; and

a transmitter in communication with the signal processor and configured to transmit signals from the signal processor to the portable telecommunication device;

wherein the portable telecommunication device comprises a user interface configured to display signals from the signal processor.

2. The network of claim 1, wherein the portable telecommunication device comprises at least one physiological sensor configured to sense one or more of the following types of physiological information generated by the person:

pulse rate, blood flow, blood gas levels, body temperature, blood pressure, and intracranial pressure.

3. The network of claim 1, wherein the sensor module comprises an earpiece module and wherein the at least one physiological sensor is configured to sense physiological information generated from the ear region of the person.

4. The network of claim 1, wherein the at least one physiological sensor comprises a blood pressure sensor comprising an actuator and a pressure transducer.

5. The network of claim 1, wherein the at least one physiological sensor comprises a blood pressure sensor comprising a pulse rate and/or blood volume sensor.

6. The network of claim 1, further comprising a personal database and an anonymous database, wherein the personal database contains cardiopulmonary information for the person, and wherein the anonymous database contains cardiopulmonary information for multiple other persons, and wherein the anonymous database is publicly accessible through the Internet.

7. The network of claim 1, wherein the sensor module comprises at least one environmental exposure sensor configured to sense environmental exposure information in the vicinity of the ear region of the person, and wherein the at least one signal processor is configured to remove environmental exposure information and/or motion information from signals generated by the at least one physiological sensor.

The network of claim 7, further comprising a personal database and an anonymous database, wherein the personal database contains cardiopulmonary and environmental information for the person, and wherein the anonymous database contains cardiopulmonary and environmental information for multiple other persons, and wherein the anonymous database is publicly accessible through the Internet.

9. The network of claim 6, wherein the portable telecommunication device comprises at least one signal processor configured to communicate with the personal and anonymous databases, to generate personalized cardiopulmonary statistics for the person from data in the personal database, and to generate cardiopulmonary statistics for multiple other persons from data in the anonymous database.

10. The network of claim 9, wherein the portable telecommunication device at least one signal processor is configured to generate a comparison between cardiopulmonary functioning of the person and cardiopulmonary functioning of multiple other persons.

11. The network of claim 1, wherein the at least one physiological sensor and/or motion sensor can be activated and deactivated via the user interface.

12. A wearable apparatus, configured to be worn at the ear region of a person and to monitor physiological information from the person, the apparatus comprising:

at least one blood flow sensor configured to sense blood flow near the ear region;

at least one acoustic sensor configured to sense sounds from the ear region;

at least one signal processor configured to process signals from the blood flow sensor and acoustic sensor; and

at least one transmitter responsive to the at least one signal processor that is configured to transmit at least one signal to at least one remote terminal.

13. The apparatus of claim 12, wherein the at least one signal processor is configured to monitor the cardiopulmonary functioning of the person.

14. The apparatus of claim 12, wherein the remote terminal comprises a signal processor that is configured to monitor the cardiopulmonary functioning of the person.

15. The apparatus of claim 12, wherein the apparatus further comprises at least one motion sensor configured to sense body motion of the person and wherein the at least one signal processor is configured to process signals from the at least one motion sensor.

16. The apparatus of claim 12, wherein the apparatus further comprises at least one temperature sensor configured to sense core body temperature of the person and wherein the at least one signal processor is configured to process signals from the at least one temperature sensor.

17. The apparatus of claim 16, wherein the at least one blood flow sensor comprises at least one optical sensor, pulse oximeter, galvanometry sensor, and/or fast-response thermal sensor;

wherein the at least one acoustic sensor comprises at least one microphone, piezoelectric sensor, vibrating membrane, and/or magnetic recorder; and

wherein the temperature sensor comprises at least one infrared sensor, imaging sensor, thermistor, and/or thermocouple.

18. The apparatus of claim 12, wherein the at least one transmitter is configured to transmit the at least one signal to a mobile phone, a music player, a computer, a personal digital assistant, and/or a database via a wired connection.

19. A system for monitoring the cardiopulmonary functioning of a person, the system comprising:

at least one remote terminal; and

a sensor module configured to be worn by the person, the sensor module comprising;

at least one physiological sensor configured to configured to sense at least one of the following types of physiological information generated by the person;

pulse rate, a blood flow, blood gas levels, body temperature, blood pressure, and intracranial pressure;

at least one signal processor configured to process the signals generated by the at least one physiological sensor; and

at least one transmitter responsive to the at least one signal processor that is configured to transmit at least one signal to the at least one a remote terminal;

wherein the at least one signal processor is configured to focus processing resources on at least one type of physiological information in response to a specified preference through the at least one remote terminal.

20. The system of claim 19, wherein the specified preference is determined by the person or is determined automatically independently of the person.
