Abstract

Implementations described and claimed herein provide a spinal facet cage implant for implantation in a spinal facet joint. In one implementation, the implant includes a distal leading end, a proximal trailing end, a first face, and a second face. The distal leading end has a distal surface generally opposite a proximal surface of the proximal trailing end. The first face has a first surface that is generally parallel with a second surface of the second face. The first and second faces extend between the distal leading end and the proximal trailing end. The first and second surfaces having one or more textured features adapted to provide friction with the spinal facet joint. One or more windows are defined in the first and/or second surfaces, and one or more side windows are defined in the first and/or second side surfaces.

Claims

1. An implant for implantation in a spinal facet joint, the implant comprising:

a distal leading end having a distal surface generally opposite a proximal surface of a proximal trailing end;

a first face having a first surface that is generally parallel with a second surface of a second face, the first and second faces extending between the distal leading end and the proximal trailing end, the first and second surfaces having one or more textured features adapted to provide friction with the spinal facet joint;

a first side having a first side surface generally opposite a second side having a second side surface, the first side surface and the second side surface;

one or more windows defined in the first surface generally opposing one or more windows defined in the second surface; and

one or more side windows defined in the first side surface generally opposing one or more windows defined in the second side surface, the windows and side windows providing access to a hollow interior of the implant.

The implant of claim 1, wherein the textured features include a ridge extending perpendicularly from each of the first and second surfaces along the length of the first and second surfaces, the ridge including an inner surface generally opposite an outer surface that is coextensive with a respective side surface of the first and second sides, the ridge having a saw toothed profile defined by a plurality of teeth having a leading distal face, a trailing proximal face, and a tip formed at an intersection between the leading distal face and the trailing proximal face.

3. The implant of claim 2, wherein the trailing proximal face has a slope that is greater than a slope of the leading distal face.

The implant of claim 2, wherein a tip of one of the teeth positioned near a general center between the distal leading end and the proximal trailing end has a height that is higher than a height of a tip of one of the teeth positioned near the proximal trailing end and a height of a tip of one of the teeth positioned near the distal leading end.

5. The implant of claim 2, wherein the ridges extend across the first and second surfaces of the first and second faces from the first side to the second side.

6. The implant of claim 1, wherein the textured features include a plurality of protrusions extending perpendicularly from each of the first and second surfaces.

7. The implant of claim 6, wherein the protrusions each have a pyramidal shape with a rectangular base that is generally parallel to a respective surface of the first face and the second face.

8. The implant of claim 6, wherein the protrusions form relatively small pyramids.

9. The implant of claim 6, wherein the protrusions form relatively large pyramids.

10. The implant of claim 6, wherein the protrusions are arranged in rows, a first row of the protrusions abutting a second row of the protrusions.

11. The implant of claim 1, wherein the textured features include a plurality of dimples, each of the dimples having a generally spherical indentation having a radial vertical depth generally perpendicularly into a respective surface of the first face and the second face.

12. The implant of claim 11, wherein the dimples are arranged in rows, each of the indentations overlapping with at least a portion of at least one adjacent indentation to form a tower.

13. The implant of claim 1, wherein the textured features include a plurality of grit particles extending generally perpendicularly from a respective surface of the first face and the second face.

14. The implant of claim 13, wherein the plurality of grit particles are randomly adhered to the surfaces of the first face and the second face.

15. The implant of claim 1, wherein the textured features include a plurality of pits extending generally perpendicularly into a respective surface of the first face and the second face.

16. The implant of claim 15, wherein the plurality of pits cover a respective surface of the first face and the second face in a random orientation.

17. The implant of claim 15, wherein the plurality of pits are achieved as a result of surface treating the surfaces of the first face and the second face.

18. The implant of claim 1, wherein the windows and the side windows are rectangular in shape.

19. The implant of claim 1, wherein the windows are circular in shape.

20. A spinal facet cage implant for implantation in a spinal facet joint, the implant comprising:

a distal leading end having a distal surface generally opposite a proximal surface of a proximal trailing end;

a first face having a first surface that is generally parallel with a second surface of a second face, the first and second faces extending between the distal leading end and the proximal trailing end, the first and second surfaces having one or more textured features adapted to provide friction with the spinal facet joint;

a first side having a first side surface generally opposite a second side having a second side surface, the first side surface and the second side surface, the first face, the second face, the distal leading end, the proximal trailing end, the first side, and the second side forming a rectangular body;

a set of distal windows including a window defined in the first surface of the first face and a side window defined in the side surface of the first side, the window and the side window extending along approximately half of a length of the implant and centered between the first side and the second side, the set of distal windows providing an opening to a distal chamber in an interior of the implant; and

a set of distal windows positioned near the distal leading end and including a distal window defined in the first surface of the first face and a distal side window defined in the side surface of the first side, the distal window and the distal side window extending along approximately half of a length of the implant and centered between the first side and the second side, the set of distal windows providing an opening to a distal chamber in an interior of the implant

a set of proximal windows positioned near the proximal trailing end and including a proximal window defined in the first surface of the first face and a proximal side window defined in the side surface of the first side, the proximal window and the proximal side window extending along approximately half of a length of the implant and centered between the first side and the second side, the set of proximal windows providing an opening to a proximal chamber in an interior of the implant.
