1. A knee joint prosthesis comprising:

  • a tibial tray having a solid metal portion, a porous metal portion and a plurality of extensions, the solid metal portion having a mounting surface and the porous metal portion having a porous bone-engaging surface opposite the mounting surface;

    a tibial bearing having a mounting surface shaped to bear against the mounting surface of the tibial tray and an opposite articulation surface; and

    a femoral component having an articulation surface and an opposite bone-engaging surface;

    wherein;

    the tibial tray has a central sagittal plane, a plurality of recesses and a plurality of studs, the recesses and the studs being spaced from the central sagittal plane;

    each stud extends from the solid metal portion into one recess to an end located within one recess;

    the porous bone-engaging surface defines a transverse plane perpendicular to the central sagittal plane;

    the ends of the studs do not extend beyond the transverse plane of the porous bone-engaging surface of the tibial tray;

    each extension is mounted on one stud with a part of the extension received within one recess; and

    each extension extends beyond the transverse of the plane bone-engaging surface of the tibial tray to an end.
