Abstract

Embodiments of the invention directed to systems and methods that allow for determining a transaction initiation mode used to conduct a transaction and applying a specific set of rules associated with the transaction initiation mode to the transaction. A transaction authorization request message is received at a server computer. The transaction authorization message is for a transaction between a consumer and a merchant and includes a plurality of data elements. The server computer determines a transaction initiation mode, from among at least three different transaction initiation modes, used to conduct the transaction based at least in part on the data elements. The server computer applies a specific set of rules associated with the transaction initiation mode to the transaction.

Claims

1. A method, comprising:

receiving, at a server computer, a transaction authorization request message for a transaction between a consumer and a merchant, wherein the transaction authorization request message comprises a plurality of data elements;

determining, by the server computer, a transaction initiation mode, from among at least three different transaction initiation modes, used to conduct the transaction based at least in part on the data elements; and

applying, by the server computer, a specific set of rules associated with the transaction initiation mode to the transaction.

2. The method of claim 1 wherein the plurality of data elements further comprises a transaction initiation mode data element.

3. The method of claim 1 wherein the plurality of data elements further comprise at least one of access device information, payment device characteristic information, or transaction initiation channel information.

4. The method of claim 1 wherein the plurality of data elements further comprise at last one of information about the merchant or information about a third party agent.

5. The method of claim 1 further comprising:

generating a credential value based on the plurality of data elements; and

transmitting the credential value to the merchant.

6. The method of claim 5 further comprising authorizing or denying the transaction based at least in part on the credential value.

7. The method of claim 1 wherein a communication is sent to the merchant for additional data elements if the plurality of data elements is insufficient to determine the transaction initiation mode.

8. The method of claim 1 wherein the specific set of rules determine the risk of the transaction based on the transaction initiation mode.

9. The method of claim 1 wherein the specific set of rules define a cost of processing the transaction.

10. The method of claim 1 further comprising:

creating an electronic receipt comprising the plurality of data elements; and

transmitting the electronic receipt to a device operated to the user.

22. The method claim 1 wherein the entity is a merchant.

11. A server computer, comprising:

a processor; and

a non-transitory computer-readable storage medium, comprising code executable by the processor for implementing a method comprising;

receiving a transaction authorization request message for a transaction between a consumer and a merchant, wherein the transaction authorization request message comprises a plurality of data elements;

determining a transaction initiation mode, from among at least three different transaction initiation modes, used to conduct the transaction based at least in part on the data elements; and

applying a specific set of rules associated with the transaction initiation mode to the transaction.

12. The server computer of claim 11 wherein the plurality of data elements further comprises a transaction initiation mode data element.

13. The server computer of claim 11 wherein the plurality of data elements further comprise at least one of access device information, payment device characteristic information, transaction initiation channel information.

14. The server computer of claim 11 wherein the plurality of data elements further comprise at last one of information about the merchant or information about a third party agent.

15. The server computer of claim 11 wherein the method further comprises:

generating a credential value based on the plurality of data elements; and

transmitting the credential value to the merchant.

16. The server computer of claim 15 wherein the method further comprises authorizing or denying the transaction based at least in part on the credential value.

17. The server computer of claim 11 wherein a communication is sent to the merchant for additional data elements if the plurality of data elements is insufficient to determine the transaction initiation mode.

18. The server computer of claim 11 wherein the specific set of rules determine the risk of the transaction based on the transaction initiation mode.

19. The server computer of claim 11 wherein the specific set of rules define a cost of processing the transaction.

20. The server computer of claim 11 wherein the method further comprises:

creating an electronic receipt comprising the plurality of data elements; and

transmitting the electronic receipt to a device operated to the user.

21. A method for authenticating a user for a transaction, comprising:

receiving, at a server computer, a plurality of data elements;

validating the plurality of data elements;

generating a credential value based on the plurality of data elements; and

transmitting the credential value to an entity.

23. A server computer configured to perform the method of claim 21.
