Abstract

A system for inserting alert based information into broadcast programming over a program distribution network. A program distributor transmits broadcast programming over program distribution network via a network fabric. When program distributor receives alert based information, the program distributor converts the alert information from a first format to a second format compatible with the broadcast programming and the program distributor inserts the converted alert into a signal carrying the broadcast programming via the network fabric. A method is also disclosed for inserting alert based information into a broadcast programming transmitted over a program distribution network.

Claims

1. A method for rendering an alert comprising:

receiving information comporting to an alert at a device;

receiving a plurality of user input selections comporting to when alerts should be rendered; and

rendering said information as an alert when said alert is of a type from a plurality of types of alerts where said type matches a first user input selection from said plurality of user input selections.

2. The method of claim 1 where said alert will be rendered when said information is from a source from a plurality of sources where said source matches a second user input selection from said plurality of user input selections.

3. The method of claim 2 where said alert will be rendered when said information has a geographic information from a plurality of geographic information where said geographic information matches a third user input selection from said plurality of user input selections.

4. The method of claim 3 where said alert where be rendered in a form in at least one of an alert shown on a display of said device, a flashing light of said device, and an audible warning from said device in response to a fourth user input selection from said plurality of user input selections.

5. A device for rendering alerts comprising:

a network connection that receives information comporting to an alert at a device;

a user interface that receives a plurality of user input selections comporting to when alerts should be rendered;

a memory that stores said plurality of user input selections;

a discriminator that determines that said information is to be rendered as an alert when said alert is of a type from a plurality of types of alerts where said type matches a first user input selection from said plurality of user input selections; and

a display that renders said alert when said discriminator determines that said alert is of said type that matches said first user input selection.

6. The apparatus of claim 5 where said discriminator determines when said information is from a source from a plurality of sources where said source matches a second user input selection from said plurality of user input selections, and said alert is rendered when said discriminator determines that said information is from said source matching said second user input selection.

7. The apparatus of claim 6 where said discriminator determines when said information has a geographic information from a plurality of geographic information where said geographic information matches a third user input selection from said plurality of user input selections, and said alert is rendered when said discriminator determines that said geographic information matches said third user input selection.
