Abstract

Disclosed is a lighting assembly for installation in conventional lighting fixtures using an angled mounting component and LED-based printed circuit board lighting fixtures having a plurality of LEDs. The printed circuit boards are secured to the mounting component of a conventional lighting fixture such that the LEDs are positioned to provide a light pattern similar to the pattern existing with the original fixture.

Claims

1. A power-consumption reducing system, the system comprising:

a lighting assembly made to be installable into a structure;

a plurality of illumination devices on the assembly;

both an external power source as well as a battery electrically connected to the illumination devices;

a switching system, the switching system upon receipt of a remotely transmitted first signal causing the external power source to be disconnected from the illumination devices, causing the illumination devices to be powered solely by battery power;

the switching system, upon the transmission of a remotely-transmitted second signal causing the external power source to become reconnected and power the illumination devices.

2. The assembly of claim 1 comprising:

a power save component which switches the illumination devices back to the external power source if the battery backup reaches a certain percentage of full charge.

3. The assembly of claim 1 wherein the assembly is adapted to receive the first and second signals electronically.

4. The assembly of claim 1 wherein the assembly is adapted to receive the first and second signals wirelessly.

5. The assembly of claim 1 wherein the external power source is an AC power grid.

6. The assembly of claim 5 wherein the first and second signals are transmitted according to time tables established by an external entity.

7. The assembly of claim 6 wherein the external entity is a power provider.

8. The assembly of claim 6 wherein the first and second signals are transmitted by the external entity in response to consumption demands.

9. The assembly of claim 1 wherein the illumination devices are LEDs mounted on two or more printed circuit boards.

10. The assembly of claim 9 wherein the printed circuit boards are oriented to direct light in an outward and downward direction.

11. The assembly of claim 10 wherein the printed circuit boards are included on a mount, the mount adapted to be retrofit into an existing lighting fixture.

12. The assembly of claim 11 wherein the mount includes two outwardly facing angled faces for supporting the printed circuit boards, the faces being at 15 degrees plus or minus 10 degrees away from horizontal in opposite directions.

13. The mount of claim 12, wherein the faces are at 15 degrees plus or minus 5 degrees away from horizontal.

14. The mount of claim 13, wherein the faces are at 15 degrees plus or minus 3 degrees away from horizontal.

15. The mount of claim 14, wherein the faces are at about 15 degrees away from horizontal.

16. A method for retrofitting an existing fluorescent-bulb lighting fixture, the existing fixture having vintage bulb connection receptacles designed to receive the ends of one or more fluorescent bulbs to support said bulbs, the method comprising:

attaching a plurality of printed circuit boards (PCBs) into the existing fluorescent-bulb lighting structure such that a plurality of LEDs on the PCBs will direct light outwardly;

executing the attaching step without using the vintage bulb connection receptacles for support.

17. A power-consumption reducing system comprising:

a plurality of LED illumination fixtures retrofitted into a variety of already existing lighting structures;

each of the LED illumination fixtures in the plurality being either connected or disconnected from an AC power grid source in response to externally-transmitted signals;

a battery power source electrically supplying power to each of the plurality of fixtures when the AC power grid is disconnected.

18. The system of claim 17 wherein the externally-emitted signals are receivable by the fixtures from a power marketing company over one of a wired or wireless network.

19. The system of claim 17 wherein the externally-emitted signal is transmitted according to a time table established by an external entity.

20. The system of claim 17 wherein the signals are used to dynamically change the amount of power consumed from the AC power grid in response to real-time consumption demands.
