Abstract

A system and method facilitating replacement of comminuted bone fractures or portions thereof adjacent bone joints. The system and method employs a prosthesis to replace at least a portion of the comminuted bone fractures. The prosthesis serves in reproducing the articular surface of the portion or portions of the comminuted bone fractures that are replaced. In doing so, the prosthesis serves in restoring joint viability and corresponding articulation thereof.

Claims

1. A system for replacement of at least a portion of a comminuted humeral head, the system comprising:

a prosthesis and a bone plate, said prosthesis having an exterior surface being sized and shaped to approximate the surface of the at least a portion of the comminuted humeral head, said bone plate including a first surface, an opposite second surface, and at least one post formed thereon, said first surface being adapted to contact at least a portion of a humerus, said at least one post extending outwardly from said first surface, wherein one of said prosthesis and said at least one post includes a male component, and the other of said prosthesis and said at least one post includes a female component, said male and female components engaging one another to connect said prosthesis and said bone plate to one another.

2. The system of claim 1, wherein said male component is an end portion of said at least one post, and said female component is an aperture formed in said prosthesis.

3. The system of claim 1, wherein said male component is a protrusion formed on said prosthesis, and said female component is an aperture formed in said at least one post.

4. The system of claim 1, wherein said at least one post is adapted to be inserted through the humerus to engage said prosthesis.

5. The system of claim 1, wherein said male and female components include complimentary engagement surfaces to facilitate a connection therebetween.

The system of claim 1, wherein said at least one post includes two portions, a first of said two portions including a regular roughened surface, an irregular roughened surface, or a smoothened surface, and a second of said two portions including a regular roughened surface, an irregular roughened surface, or a smoothened surface.

7. The system of claim 1, wherein said each of said two portions are one of cylindrical and frusto-conical.

8. A system for replacement of at least a portion of a comminuted humeral head, the system comprising:

a prosthesis having an exterior surface and at least one aperture, said exterior surface being sized and shaped to approximate the surface of the at least a portion of the comminuted humeral head; and

a bone plate including a first surface, an opposite second surface, and at least one post formed thereon, said first surface being adapted to contact at least a portion of a humerus, said at least one post extending outwardly from said first surface, wherein, when the system is positioned with respect to the humerus, said at least one post extends through the humerus and engages said at least one aperture formed in said prosthesis to connect said prosthesis and said bone plate to one another.

9. The system of claim 8, wherein said prosthesis and said first surface are adapted to clamp a portion of the humerus therebetween.

10. The system of claim 8, wherein said at least one post and said at least one aperture include complimentary engagement surfaces to facilitate a connection therebetween.

11. The system of claim 8, wherein said prosthesis includes an interior cavity and a substrate provided in at least a portion of said interior cavity, said at least one aperture being provided in said substrate.

12. The system of claim 11, wherein said substrate is a wire mesh material.

13. The system of claim 11, wherein said substrate is a polymeric material.

14. A system for replacement of at least a portion of a comminuted humeral head, the system comprising:

a prosthesis having an exterior surface and at least one aperture formed therein, said exterior surface being sized and shaped to approximate the surface of the at least a portion of the comminuted humeral head;

a first plate including a first surface and an opposite second surface, said first surface adapted to contact an exterior portion of a humerus;

a second plate including a first surface and an opposite second surface, said first surface including at least one post extending outwardly therefrom, and said second surface being adapted to contact an interior portion of the humerus; and

at least one fastener adapted to attach said first and second plates to one another and the humerus, wherein, when the system is position with respect to the humerus, said first plate and said second plate are attached to one another and the humerus with said at least one fastener, and said at least one post extends through the humerus and engages said at least one aperture formed in said prosthesis to connect said prosthesis and said second plate to one another.

15. The system of claim 14, wherein said first surface of said first plate and said second surface of said second plate are adapted to clamp a portion of the humerus therebetween.

16. The system of claim 14, wherein said prosthesis and said first surface of said second plate are adapted to clamp a portion of the humerus therebetween.
