Abstract

Systems and methods configured to specify and/or deliver the benefit of an offer, based on the identity of an issuer of a consumer payment account with which the offer is associated and using which account a transaction qualifying for the offer is performed.

Claims

1. A computer-implemented method, comprising:

receiving, in a computing apparatus, an input from a user, the input associating an offer provided to the user with a payment account of the user;

identifying, by the computing apparatus, an issuer of the payment account associated with the offer;

selecting, by the computing apparatus based at least in part on an identity of the issuer, a mechanism from a plurality of mechanisms to deliver a benefit of the offer;

detecting, by the computing apparatus, a payment transaction in the payment account for a purchase qualified for the benefit of the offer; and

providing, by the computing apparatus, the benefit of the offer to the user using the mechanism selected based at least in part on the identity of the issuer.

2. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

notifying the user at a communication reference associated with the consumer account about the mechanism selected to deliver the benefit of the offer.

3. The method of claim 1, wherein the mechanism selected for the offer is statement credit provided to the payment account, in response to a determination that an issuer processor of the issuer is in compliance with electronic financial transaction message standard for statement credit.

The method of claim 1, wherein in response to a determination that an issuer processor of the issuer is not in compliance with electronic financial transaction message standard for statement credit, the mechanism selected for the offer is to use a promotional code transmitted in an authorization response for the payment transaction to apply the benefit at a transaction terminal that initiates the payment transaction.

5. The method of claim 1, wherein the benefit of the offer is applied to the payment transaction during authorization of the payment transaction.

6. The method of claim 5, wherein the benefit of the offer is applied to the payment transaction via adjusting a transaction amount via an authorization response of the payment transaction.

7. The method of claim 5, wherein the benefit of the offer is applied to the payment transaction via reducing a transaction amount in the payment account and generating a second transaction with a sponsor processor of the benefit.

8. The method of claim 7, wherein the transaction amount as reduced in the payment account and the benefit provided in the second transaction with the sponsor processor are combined to meet an authorization request for the payment transaction.

9. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

prior to the receiving of the input from the user, communicating to the user the offer identifying a benefit without specifying a mechanism to deliver the benefit.

10. The method of claim 9, further comprising:

after the receiving of the input from the user, communicating to the user of the payment account to notify the user of the mechanism selected for the offer based at least in part on the identity of the issuer.

11. The method of claim 10, wherein the user is notified of the mechanism selected for the offer, using a communication reference pre-associated with the payment account of the user prior to the receiving of the input from the user.

12. The method of claim 10, wherein the user is notified of the mechanism selected for the offer as a response to the input from the user to associate the offer with the payment account of the user.

13. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

storing data associating issuer identifiers with mechanisms to deliver offer benefits;

wherein the selecting of the mechanism is based on the identity of the issuer and the data associating issuer identifiers with mechanisms to deliver offer benefits.

14. The method of claim 13, further comprising:

transmitting a message to a communication reference pre-associated with the payment account of the user, the message notifying the user of the benefit applied to the payment transaction.

15. The method of claim 14, wherein transmission of the message is initiated during authorization of the payment transaction.

16. The method of claim 14, further comprising:

generating a trigger record to detect the payment transaction, in response to the input from the user.

17. A non-transitory computer-storage medium storing instructions configured to instruct a computing apparatus to at least:

receive, in the computing apparatus, an input from a user, the input associating an offer provided to the user with a payment account of the user;

identify, by the computing apparatus, an issuer of the payment account associated with the offer;

select, by the computing apparatus based at least in part on an identity of the issuer, a mechanism from a plurality of mechanisms to deliver a benefit of the offer;

detect, by the computing apparatus, a payment transaction in the payment account for a purchase qualified for the benefit of the offer; and

provide, by the computing apparatus, the benefit of the offer to the user using the mechanism selected based at least in part on the identity of the issuer.

18. A computing apparatus, comprising:

at least one microprocessor; and

a memory storing instructions configured to instruct the at least one microprocessor to perform operations, wherein the computing apparatus including;

a portal configured to receive an input from a user, the input associating an offer provided to the user with a payment account of the user, identify an issuer of the payment account associated with the offer, and

select, based at least in part on an identity of the issuer, a mechanism from a plurality of mechanisms to deliver a benefit of the offer; and

a transaction handler configured to detect a payment transaction in the payment account for a purchase qualified for the benefit of the offer; and

provide the benefit of the offer to the user using the mechanism selected based at least in part on the identity of the issuer.

19. The computing apparatus of claim 18, wherein the benefit is provided via a statement credit request to an issuer processor of the issuer.

20. The computing apparatus of claim 18, wherein the benefit is provided via a promotional code transmitted to a transaction terminal initiated the payment transaction, the promotional code causing the transaction terminal to apply a discount to the payment transaction.
