Abstract

A prosthetic hip installation system comprising a reamer, an impactor, a tracking element, and a remote system. The tracking element can be integrated into the reamer or impactor for providing tracking data on the position or orientation. Alternatively, the tracking element can be housed in a separate module that can be coupled to either the reamer or impactor. The tracking element will couple to a predetermined location. Points in 3D space can be registered to provide a frame of reference for the tracking element or when the tracking element is moved from tool to tool. The tracking element sends data from the reamer or impactor wirelessly. The remote system receives the tracking data and can further process the data. A display on the remote system can support placement and orientation of the tool to aid in the installation of the prosthetic component.

Claims

1. A hip installation system comprising:

a reamer having a tracking element coupled thereto where the reamer is configured to provide tracking data of the reamer;

an impactor having a tracking element coupled thereto configured to provide tracking data of the impactor; and

a remote system configured to receive the tracking data from the reamer and the impactor where the remote system is configured to support positioning the reamer and impactor.

2. The system of claim 1 where the tracking element is configured to sample at greater than 40 times per second.

3. The system of claim 2 where the tracking element of the reamer and the tracking element of the impactor is configured to provide tracking data within 1 millimeter over a path length less of 5 meters or less.

4. The system of claim 3 where the tracking element of the reamer and the tracking element of the impactor is configured to provide orientation tracking data within 1 degree.

5. The system of claim 1 where the remote system is configured to support positioning the reamer or the impactor to a predetermined inclination and anteversion related to anatomical planes.

6. The system of claim 1 where the tracking element of the reamer or the impactor can register points in 3D space and where the remote system has a GUI to support positioning of the reamer or the impactor.

7. The system of claim 1 where each tracking element comprises a first sensor and a second sensor configured to provide redundant tracking data.

8. The system of claim 7 where the first and second sensor comprises an accelerometer, a magnetometer, a gyroscopic MEMs chip, or an INS chip.

9. The system of claim 8 further including:

a tri-axial accelerometer;

a multiplexer (MUX) coupled to the tri-axial accelerometer;

a converter coupled to the multiplexer;

an analog to digital converter (ADC) coupled to the converter;

a transceiver coupled to the analog to digital converter configured to send position data from the system; and

control logic coupled to the tri-axial accelerometer, multiplexer, converter, and transceiver configured to control position and orientation measurement.

10. The system of claim 9 where the remote system combines a first data set of the first sensor and a second data set of the second sensor into a Kalman Filter.

14. The system of claim 1 further including:

a tri-axial accelerometer;

a multiplexer (MUX) coupled to the tri-axial accelerometer;

a converter coupled to the multiplexer;

an analog to digital converter (ADC) coupled to the converter;

a transceiver coupled to the analog to digital converter configured to send position data from the system; and

control logic coupled to the tri-axial accelerometer, multiplexer, converter, and transceiver configured to control position and orientation measurement

15. The system of claim 14 further including a magnetometer configured to provide a second data set where the remote system combines a first data set and a second data set into a Kalman Filter.

11. A hip installation system comprising:

a reamer;

an impactor;

a tracking element that can be coupled to the reamer or the impactor at a predetermined location where the tracking element provides position and orientation data; and

a remote system configured to receive tracking data where the remote system is configured to support positioning the reamer or impactor.

12. The hip installation system of claim 11 where the remote system is configured to support positioning the impactor to a predetermined inclination and anteversion related to anatomical planes to install an acetabular cup.

13. The hip installation system of claim 12 where the tracking element comprises a first sensor and a second sensor configured to provide redundant tracking data and where the tracking element couples to a predetermined location on the reamer or the impactor.

16. A hip installation system comprising:

an impactor configured to install a hip prosthetic component;

a tracking element coupled to the impactor comprising an accelerometer configured to provide a first data set and at least one of a magnetometer, a gyroscopic, MEMs chip, or an INS chip to provide a second data set; and

a remote system configured to receive tracking data from the tracking element where the remote system is configured to support positioning the impactor to a predetermined inclination and anteversion related to anatomical planes to support installation of a prosthetic component.

17. The system of claim 16 where the first data set is compared to the second data set.

18. The system of claim 17 where the accelerometer is a tri-axial accelerometer or a six-axis accelerometer.

The system of claim 18 where the tracking element is configured to sample at greater than 40 times per second, where the tracking element is configured to provide tracking data within 1 millimeter over a path length of less than 5 meters or less, and where the tracking element is configured to provide orientation tracking data within 1 degree.

20. The system of claim 19 further including:

a multiplexer (MUX) coupled to the accelerometer;

a converter coupled to the multiplexer;

an analog to digital converter (ADC) coupled to the converter;

a transceiver coupled to the analog to digital converter configured to send position data from the system; and

control logic coupled to the accelerometer, multiplexer, converter, and transceiver configured to control position measurement.
