Abstract

A surgical implant includes at least two porous film layers each having a plurality of pores. The porous film layers are in a stacked configuration and are interconnected to one another at a plurality of attachment points to define at least one void between the porous film layers.

Claims

1. A surgical implant, comprising:

a first porous film layer including a plurality of pores; and

a second porous film layer including a plurality of pores,

the first and second porous film layers being in a stacked configuration and interconnected to one another at a plurality of attachment points to define at least one void between the first and second porous film layers.

2. The surgical implant of claim 1, wherein each of the first porous film layer and the second porous film layer is fabricated from at least one of a biodegradable material and a non-degradable material.

3. The surgical implant of claim 1, wherein the first and second porous film layers are substantially planar.

4. The surgical implant of claim 1, wherein the plurality of attachment points are substantially evenly spaced about the first and second porous film layers.

5. The surgical implant of claim 1, further comprising a filler material disposed within at least one of the openings of the first porous film layer, the openings of the second porous film layer, and the voids between the first and second porous film layers.

6. The surgical implant of claim 5, wherein the filler material comprises a drug.

7. The surgical implant of claim 5, wherein the filler material is a hydrogel.

8. The surgical implant of claim 1, wherein the first porous film layer has a first thickness and the second porous film layer has a second thickness that is different from the first thickness.

9. The surgical implant of claim 1, wherein the first porous film layer has a first modulus of elasticity and the second porous film layer has a second modulus of elasticity that is different from the first modulus of elasticity.

10. The surgical implant of claim 1, wherein the first porous film layer has a first degree of porosity and the second porous film layer has a second degree of porosity that is different from the first degree of porosity.

11. The surgical implant of claim 1, wherein the first porous film layer is uniaxially oriented in a first direction and the second porous film layer is uniaxially oriented in a second direction that is different from the first direction.

12. The surgical implant of claim 1, further comprising an adhesion barrier layer applied to an outer surface of at least one of the first and second porous film layers.

13. The surgical implant of claim 1, further comprising an adhesive layer applied to an outer surface of at least one of the first and second porous film layers.

14. The surgical implant of claim 1, further comprising a third porous film layer including a plurality of pores, the third porous film layer being interposed between the first and second porous film layers, and interconnected by at least one attachment point with at least one of the first and second porous film layers.

15. A surgical implant comprising a plurality of porous substrates in a layered configuration, the porous substrates being interconnected by a plurality of spaced attachment points defining voids between successive layers of the porous substrates.

16. The surgical implant of claim 15, wherein each porous substrate is formed entirely from a film.

17. The surgical implant of claim 15, wherein the surgical implant is a surgical buttress.

18. The surgical implant of claim 15, wherein the surgical implant is a hernia repair device.

19. The surgical implant of claim 15, wherein the surgical implant is a scaffold.

20. The surgical implant of claim 15, wherein the surgical implant is a tissue sealant patch.
