Abstract

The risk of fraud in point of sale credit card transactions is reduced by providing independently-routed verification by communication between the authorized user of the credit card and the issuer of the credit card through a trusted intermediary.

Claims

1. A system for secure verification of a point of sale transaction, comprising:

(a) a network for allowing a merchant to request authorization of a transaction from a user'"'"'s bank;

(b) a mobile telephone which has been registered with a verifying agency as belonging to said user;

(c) a network for communication between said bank and said mobile telephone, suitable for generating a request for confirmation that said transaction is authorized by said user;

(d) an application running on said mobile telephone, suitable for sending a signal either confirming or refusing authorization to said bank; and

(e) a network for allowing said bank to respond to said merchant with an approval or a denial of authorization in response to said signal from said mobile telephone.

2. A process for verifying the authenticity of a request for authorization of payment in a point of sale transaction, comprising:

(a) Providing a system of networks comprising;

(1) a network for allowing a merchant to request authorization of a transaction from a user'"'"'s bank;

(2) a mobile telephone which has been registered with a verifying agency as belonging to said user;

(3) a network for communication between said bank and said mobile telephone, suitable for generating a request for confirmation that said transaction is authorized by said user;

(4) an application running on said mobile telephone, suitable for sending a signal either confirming or refusing authorization to said bank; and

(5) a network for allowing said bank to respond to said merchant with an approval or a denial of authorization in response to said signal from said mobile telephone;

(b) initiating, by the merchant, of a request for authorization of said transaction;

(c) generating a request to the user'"'"'s registered mobile telephone for confirmation that said transaction is authorized by said user;

(d) generating, by said user, a response to said request, either confirming or refusing authorization;

(e) generating, by said bank, a response to said merchant either confirming or refusing authorization in response to the signal from said mobile telephone.
