Abstract

A controlled area containing items associated with radio frequency identification (RFID) tags is monitored with an RFID tag reader having a phased antenna array for generating a multitude of beams to interrogate the tags in the controlled area, and with a controller for collecting data from the interrogated tags, for automatically configuring the beams based on the collected data, and for processing the configured beams to optimize the monitoring of the controlled area.

Claims

1. An arrangement for monitoring a controlled area containing items associated with radio frequency identification (RFID) tags, comprising:

an RFID tag reader having a phased antenna array for generating a multitude of beams to interrogate the tags in the controlled area; and

a controller operatively connected to the tag reader for collecting data from the interrogated tags, for automatically configuring the beams based on the collected data, and for processing the configured beams to optimize the monitoring of the controlled area.

The arrangement of claim 1, wherein the controller is operative for collecting the data over multiple reads, for identifying when the collected data is the same over the multiple reads, and for rejecting the data collected from any beam when the collected data is identified as being the same over the multiple reads.

The arrangement of claim 1, wherein the controller is operative for identifying tags of a same type, for determining subsets of the beams that each identify the same type of tag, for grouping the subsets of the beams into a plurality of zones each identifying the items associated with the same type of tag, and for processing only the zones to optimize the monitoring of the controlled area.

The arrangement of claim 3, wherein the controller is operative for collecting the data over multiple reads, for identifying when the collected data is the same over the multiple reads, and for rejecting the data collected from any zone when the collected data is identified as being the same over the multiple reads.

The arrangement of claim 1, wherein the controller is operative for identifying tags of different types, for determining subsets of the beams that identify the different types of tags, for grouping the subsets of the beams into a plurality of zones each identifying the items associated with the different types of tags, for processing each zone with performance criteria, and for changing the performance criteria of any zone as a function of the type of tag that is in that respective zone.

6. The arrangement of claim 1, wherein the controller is operative for building a planogram of the controlled area, in which the locations of the items are depicted in the controlled area.

The arrangement of claim 1, and further comprising another RFID tag reader having another phased antenna array for generating another multitude of beams to interrogate the tags in the controlled area, and wherein the controller is operative for automatically configuring the beams from both of the readers based on the collected data, and for processing the configured beams from both of the readers to optimize the monitoring of the controlled area.

8. A method of monitoring a controlled area containing items associated with radio frequency identification (RFID) tags, comprising:

generating a multitude of beams from a phased antenna array of an RFID tag reader to interrogate the tags in the controlled area;

collecting data from the interrogated tags;

automatically configuring the beams based on the collected data; and

processing the configured beams to optimize the monitoring of the controlled area.

The method of claim 8, wherein the collecting of the data is performed over multiple reads, and identifying when the collected data is the same over the multiple reads, and rejecting the collected data from any beam when the collected data is identified as being the same over the multiple reads.

The method of claim 8, and identifying tags of a same type, and determining subsets of the beams that each identify the same type of tag, and grouping the subsets of the beams into a plurality of zones each identifying the items associated with the same type of tag, and wherein the processing is performed by only processing the zones to optimize the monitoring of the controlled area.

The method of claim 10, wherein the collecting of the data is performed over multiple reads, and identifying when the collected data is the same over the multiple reads, and rejecting the data collected from any zone when the collected data is identified as being the same over the multiple reads.

The method of claim 8, and identifying tags of different types, and determining subsets of the beams that identify the different types of tags, and grouping the subsets of the beams into a plurality of zones each identifying the items associated with the different types of tags, and processing of each zone with performance criteria, and changing the performance criteria of any zone as a function of the type of tag that is in that respective zone.

13. The method of claim 8, and building a planogram of the controlled area, in which the locations of the items are depicted in the controlled area.

The method of claim 8, and further comprising generating another multitude of beams from another phased antenna array of another RFID tag reader to interrogate the tags in the controlled area, and automatically configuring the beams from both of the readers based on the collected data, and processing the configured beams from both of the readers to optimize the monitoring of the controlled area.
