Abstract

Whether to enable a packet discarding mode is designated and, if an information processing apparatus operates in a power saving mode and the packet discarding mode is enabled, the information processing apparatus determines processing for a received packet based on a proxy response pattern, a WOL pattern, and a discard pattern, and, if the information processing apparatus operates in the power saving mode and the packet discarding mode is disabled, the information processing apparatus determines processing for the received packet based on the proxy response pattern and the WOL pattern without using the discard pattern.

Claims

1. An information processing apparatus operable in a first power mode and a second power mode with smaller power consumption than the first power mode, the apparatus comprising:

a receiving unit configured to receive a packet sent from an external apparatus;

a storage unit configured to store, as information to be used by the information processing apparatus operating in the second power mode, for determining processing for a received packet received by the receiving unit, a response pattern which indicates a pattern of a packet in which the information processing apparatus responds to the received packet while maintaining the second power mode, a shift pattern which indicates a packet in which the information processing apparatus is shifted from the second power mode to the first power mode, and a discard pattern with which the information processing apparatus discards the received packet and maintains the second power mode; and

a setting unit configured to set whether to use the discard pattern in order to determine the processing for the received packet based on a designation,

wherein, if the information processing apparatus operates in the second power mode and the discard pattern is set to be used by the setting unit, the information processing apparatus determines the processing for the received packet based on the response pattern, the shift pattern, and the discard pattern, and

wherein, if the information processing apparatus operates in the second power mode and the discard pattern is set not to be used by the setting unit, the information processing apparatus determines the processing for the received packet based on the response pattern and the shift pattern.

2. The information processing apparatus according to claim 1, further comprising:

a first determination unit configured to determine whether the received packet matches the response pattern;

a second determination unit configured to determine, after the received packet is determined not to match the response pattern by the first determination unit, whether the received packet matches the discard pattern; and

a third determination unit configured to determine, after the received packet is determined not to match the discard pattern by the second determination unit, whether the received packet matches the shift pattern,

wherein, if the information processing apparatus operates in the second power mode and the discard pattern is set to be used by the setting unit, the information processing apparatus determines the processing for the received packet based on a determination result of the first determination unit, the second determination unit, and the third determination unit.

3. The information processing apparatus according to claim 2, wherein, if the received packet is determined not to match the shift pattern by the third determination unit, the information processing apparatus discards the received packet and maintains the second power mode.

4. The information processing apparatus according to claim 2, further comprising:

a fourth determination unit configured to determine whether the received packet matches the shift pattern after the received packet is determined not to match the response pattern by the first determination unit,

wherein, if the information processing apparatus operates in the second power mode and the discard pattern is set not to be used by the setting unit, the information processing apparatus determines the processing for the received packet based on a determination result of the first determination unit and the fourth determination unit.

5. The information processing apparatus according to claim 4, wherein, if the received packet is determined not to match the shift pattern by the fourth determination unit, the information processing apparatus discards the received packet and maintains the second power mode.

6. The information processing apparatus according to claim 1, further comprising:

a display unit configured to display a setting screen for setting whether to use the discard pattern, and

wherein the setting unit sets whether to use the discard pattern based on the designation via the setting screen.

7. The information processing apparatus according to claim 1, wherein the discard pattern indicates a packet of a particular protocol, and

wherein the response pattern indicates a packet of a particular pattern out of packets of the particular protocol.

8. The information processing apparatus according to claim 1, wherein the discard pattern indicates a Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP), and

wherein the response pattern indicates a particular GetRequest out of packets of the SNMP.

9. The information processing apparatus according to claim 1, wherein the shift pattern indicates a packet for the information processing apparatus.

10. The information processing apparatus according to claim 1, wherein if the information processing apparatus operates in the second power mode and the discard pattern is set not to be used by the setting unit, the information processing apparatus determines that the received packet that matches the discard pattern matches the shift pattern.

11. An information processing apparatus operable in a first power mode and a second power mode with smaller power consumption than the first power mode, the apparatus comprising:

a receiving unit configured to receive a packet sent from an external apparatus;

a storage unit configured to store, as information to be used by the information processing apparatus operating in the second power mode, for determining processing for a received packet received by the receiving unit, a response pattern which indicates a pattern of a packet in which the information processing apparatus responds to the received packet while maintaining the second power mode, a shift pattern which indicates a packet in which the information processing apparatus is shifted from the second power mode to the first power mode, and a discard pattern in which the information processing apparatus discards the received packet and maintains the second power mode; and

a setting unit configured to, if the received packet matches the discard pattern, set whether to enable or disable a packet discarding mode in which the received packet is discarded and the second power mode is maintained based on a designation,

wherein, if the information processing apparatus operates in the second power mode and the received packet matches the response pattern, the information processing apparatus responds to the received packet while maintaining the second power mode,

wherein, if the information processing apparatus operates in the second power mode and the received packet matches the shift pattern, the information processing apparatus is shifted from the second power mode to the first power mode, and

wherein, if the information processing apparatus operates in the second power mode and the received packet matches the discard pattern, the information processing apparatus discards the received packet if the packet discarding mode is enabled by the setting unit, and the information processing apparatus does not discard the received packet if the packet discarding mode is disabled by the setting unit.

12. The information processing apparatus according to claim 11, further comprising:

a display unit configured to display a setting screen for setting whether to enable or disable the packet discarding mode, and

wherein the setting unit sets whether to enable or disable the packet discarding mode based on the input designated via the setting screen.

13. A method for controlling an information processing apparatus operable in a first power mode and a second power mode with smaller power consumption than the first power mode, the method comprising:

receiving a packet sent from an external apparatus;

storing, as information to be used by the information processing apparatus operating in the second power mode, for determining processing for the received packet, a response pattern which indicates a pattern of a packet in which the information processing apparatus responds to the received packet while maintaining the second power mode, a shift pattern which indicates a packet in which the information processing apparatus is shifted from the second power mode to the first power mode, and a discard pattern in which the information processing apparatus discards the received packet and maintains the second power mode; and

setting whether to use the discard pattern in order to determine the processing for the received packet based on a designation,

wherein, if the information processing apparatus operates in the second power mode and the discard pattern is set to be used, the information processing apparatus determines the processing for the received packet based on the response pattern, the shift pattern, and the discard pattern, and

wherein, if the information processing apparatus operates in the second power mode and the discard pattern is set not to be used, the information processing apparatus determines the processing for the received packet based on the response pattern and the shift pattern.

15. A computer-readable storage medium storing a program that causes a computer to execute the method according to claim 13.

14. A method for controlling an information processing apparatus operable in a first power mode and a second power mode with smaller power consumption than the first power mode, the method comprising:

receiving a packet sent from an external apparatus;

storing, as information to be used by the information processing apparatus operating in the second power mode, for determining processing for the received packet, a response pattern which indicates a pattern of a packet in which the information processing apparatus responds to the received packet while maintaining the second power mode, a shift pattern which indicates a packet in which the information processing apparatus is shifted from the second power mode to the first power mode, and a discard pattern with which the information processing apparatus discards the received packet and maintains the second power mode; and

setting, if the received packet matches the discard pattern, whether to enable or disable a packet discarding mode in which the received packet is discarded and the second power mode is maintained based on a designation,

wherein, if the information processing apparatus operates in the second power mode and the received packet matches the response pattern, the information processing apparatus responds to the received packet while maintaining the second power mode,

wherein, if the information processing apparatus operates in the second power mode and the received packet matches the shift pattern, the information processing apparatus is shifted from the second power mode to the first power mode, and

wherein, if the information processing apparatus operates in the second power mode and the received packet matches the discard pattern, the information processing apparatus discards the received packet if the packet discarding mode is enabled, and the information processing apparatus does not discard the received packet if the packet discarding mode is disabled.

16. A computer-readable storage medium storing a program that causes a computer to execute the method according to claim 14.
