Abstract

A fact checking system is able to verify the correctness of information and/or characterize information by comparing the information with one or more sources. The fact checking system automatically monitors, processes, fact checks information and indicates a status of the information. The fact checking system is able to incorporate a graphical user interface with fact checking icons to indicate fact checking results.

Claims

1. A method programmed in a non-transitory memory of a device comprising:

a. receiving a fact checking result with the device, wherein the fact checking result is based on a comparison of information with source information to determine factual accuracy of the information;

b. automatically displaying the fact checking result in real-time, wherein the fact checking result is represented as an icon on a screen of the device.

2. The method of claim 1 wherein the icon indicates at least one of a factually inaccurate comment, a misleading comment, and a biased comment.

3. The method of claim 1 wherein a list of icons is generated when more than one fact checking result is represented.

4. The method of claim 3 wherein icons in the list are displayed in chronological order.

5. The method of claim 1 wherein the icon is selectable to display additional information.

6. The method of claim 1 wherein hovering over the icon displays the fact checking result as text or audio.

7. The method of claim 1 wherein clicking the icon displays the fact checking result as text or audio.

8. The method of claim 1 further comprising displaying a video on the device wherein the information compared with the source information is from the video.

9. The method of claim 1 wherein the icon is grouped in a characterization group based on a characterization of the information.

10. The method of claim 9 wherein a number appears on or near each characterization group indicating a number of comments with the characterization.

11. The method of claim 9 wherein the characterization group with more than one comment appears three-dimensional.

12. The method of claim 9 wherein the characterization group with more than one comment includes multiple icons in a layered formation.

13. The method of claim 9 wherein when a user selects the characterization group, comments within the characterization group are displayed in a list form for a user to view and/or select for more information.

14. The method of claim 1 wherein the icon indicates an entity providing the information.

15. The method of claim 1 wherein the icon is grouped in an entity group based on an entity providing the information, and icons are displayed in a comparative format comparing each entity.

16. The method of claim 1 wherein the icon is displayed on the device, and a video is displayed on a second device, wherein the video of the second device is fact checked by the device.

17. The method of claim 1 further comprising displaying an entity icon of an entity related to the information wherein the entity icon is distorted based on the fact checking result.

18. The method of claim 1 wherein the source information comprises a plurality of sources, and each source of the plurality of sources has a reliability rating based on the accuracy of information within each source of the plurality of sources, wherein the accuracy is determined based on previous fact checking results, wherein a first source with a first reliability rating is given more weight during fact checking than a second source with a second reliability rating lower than the first reliability rating, wherein each source of the plurality of sources with the reliability rating below a threshold is not used in fact checking.

19. A method programmed in a non-transitory memory of a device comprising:

a. automatically fact checking information to determine a factual accuracy of the information by comparing, with the device, the information with source information; and

b. automatically displaying in real-time an icon representing a status of the information based on a result of the comparison of the information with the source information.

20. A device comprising:

a. a memory for storing an application for automatically performing the following steps;

i. fact checking video content to determine a factual accuracy of the video content by comparing the video content with source information; and

ii. displaying in real-time a list of selectable icons representing a status of the video content based on a result of the comparison of the video content with the source information, wherein the list of selectable icons indicates at least one of a misleading comment, a biased comment, a sarcastic comment, and a questionable comment; and

b. a processor for processing the application.
