Abstract

A system and method for improving radio performance through automatic channel selection utilizing a closed-channel model is disclosed. A measurement engine records maximum user throughput on a per station basis during normal traffic operation. The measurement engine further records throughput metrics based on test traffic sent to all associated stations during idle operation. A policy logic engine utilizes the measurements to determine an optimal transmission channel for transmission and receipt of data.

Claims

1. A method for reducing interference in a network, the method comprising:

determining transmission channel quality metrics for available transmission channels on a per station basis, wherein each transmission channel quality metric is a closed-loop measurement between a measuring station and another station in the network;

selecting a transmission channel based on the determined transmission channel quality metrics; and

selecting an antenna configuration, wherein the selected antenna configuration and the selected transmission channel collectively reduce interference.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein the antenna configuration increases gain.

3. The method of claim 1, wherein at least one of the transmission channel quality metrics is a throughput metric.

4. The method of claim 1, wherein at least one of the transmission channel quality metrics takes into account channel environmental conditions.

5. The method of claim 1, wherein at least one of the transmission channel quality metrics is a power level metric.

6. The method of claim 1, wherein at least one of the transmission channel quality metrics is a frequency response metric.

7. The method of claim 1, wherein at least one of the transmission channel quality metrics is a noise metric.

8. The method of claim 1, wherein the network is a wireless local area network.

9. The method of claim 1, wherein selecting a transmission channel comprises:

determining a first channel quality based on the transmission channel quality metrics for a present transmission channel between the measuring station and the other station;

determining a second channel quality based on the transmission channel quality metrics for an available transmission channel between the measuring station and the other station; and

selecting from amongst the present transmission channel and the available transmission channel based on the first and second channel qualities.

10. The method of claim 9, wherein the present transmission channel is maintained when the first channel quality is greater than or equal to the second channel quality.

11. The method of claim 9, wherein the available transmission channel is selected when the second channel quality is greater than the first channel quality.

12. The method of claim 11, further comprising providing instructions to an access point to change the available transmission channel.

13. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

recording the transmission channel quality metrics; and

maintaining the recorded transmission channel quality metrics across transmission channel changes.

14. The method of claim 1, further comprising determining updated transmission channel quality metrics for the available transmission channels.

15. The method of claim 14, wherein the transmission channel is selected based on the updated transmission channel quality metrics.

16. The method of claim 1, further comprising determining a magnitude and a phase of each available transmission channel.

17. The method of claim 16, wherein the magnitude and phase of each available transmission channel are determined by transmitting a pilot signal to a remote access point.

18. The method of claim 16, further comprising determining weight values for the available transmission channels based on the determined magnitude and phase of each available transmission channel.

19. The method of claim 18, further comprising determining weight values for the available transmission channels based on the determined magnitude and phase of each available transmission channel.

20. The method of claim 19, further comprising adapting a transmission of the available transmission channels based on the weight values.
