Abstract

Techniques and tools are described for facilitating user reflection on past decisions in order to determine trends and to assist in future decision-making. Technologies for administering a career history exercise and for visualizing results of the career history exercise are described. Visualizations include using stage cards representative of stages in a user'"'"'s career history. User ratings of the stages in his or her career history are displayed on the stage cards using color-shaded ratings units.

Claims

1. A method, implemented at least in part by one or more computing devices, for presenting a user interface for facilitating user evaluation of past career decisions, the method comprising:

presenting at least three stage cards representing different stages in a career history of a user;

responsive to activation of one of the at least three stage cards, presenting a user interface element for receiving a stage name to be assigned to the activated stage card;

presenting the stage name with the activated stage card;

presenting, on the at least three stage cards, groups of ratings units representing at least three ratings categories; and

color-shading individual ratings units according to user rating of the career history stages, wherein the color-shaded ratings units are color-coded according to ratings category.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein presenting the user interface element comprises presenting a list of potential stage names collected from pre-existing career history data.

3. The method of claim 1, wherein the user interface element is a text box and the method further comprises:

responsive to text entered into the text box, presenting a stage name that matches with the entered text.

4. The method of claim 1, wherein the user interface element is presented responsive to hovering of a pointer over the one of the at least three stage cards.

5. The method of claim 1, wherein presenting the groups of ratings units comprises presenting a series of ratings units as a vertical, linear series for each of the at least three ratings categories on each of the at least three stage cards.

6. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

presenting text describing one of the at least three ratings categories in response to a user-initiated gesture directed at a ratings unit representing the described ratings category.

7. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

responsive to user selection of one of the at least three ratings categories, presenting color-shaded ratings units for the selected ratings category on the at least three stage cards.

8. The method of claim 1, wherein the user interface element is a first user interface element, the method further comprising:

presenting a second user interface element associated with one of the at least three ratings categories; and

responsive to activation of the second user interface element, presenting color-shaded ratings units that correspond to the ratings category associated with the second user interface element.

9. The method of claim 1, wherein the user interface element is a first user interface element, the method further comprising:

presenting additional user interface elements on remaining stage cards for receiving additional stage names; and

presenting the additional stage names with the respective stage cards.

10. A computer system, comprising:

a processor; and

memory storing computer-executable instructions for causing the computer system to perform a method of presenting a user interface for administering a career history exercise, the method comprising;

presenting at least three stage cards representing different stages in a career history of a user;

responsive to activation of a first stage card of the at least three stage cards by the user, presenting a first user interface element for receiving input of a first stage name to be assigned to the first stage card;

presenting the first stage name with the first stage card;

responsive to activation of a second stage card of the at least three stage cards by the user, presenting a second user interface element for receiving input of a second stage name to be assigned to the second stage card;

presenting the second stage name with the second stage card;

presenting a series of ratings units for each of at least three ratings categories on each of the at least three stage cards;

responsive to mouse gestures directed at individual ratings units, color-shading the individual ratings units, wherein each series of ratings units is color-coded based on the corresponding ratings category; and

presenting the at least three stage cards with the respective stage names and with a portion of the ratings units color-shaded according to user rating of each stage in the career history.

11. One or more computer-readable storage media storing computer-executable instructions for causing a computing device to perform a method for administering a career history exercise, the method comprising:

displaying three or more stage cards operable to be associated with a stage in a career history of a user;

interpreting user input as an activation of one of the three or more displayed stage cards;

receiving a stage name for the activated stage card;

displaying the stage name associated with the activated stage card;

displaying a plurality of ratings units representing three or more ratings categories on the activated stage card;

receiving user ratings of the stage corresponding to the activated stage card for the three or more ratings categories; and

displaying the user ratings as color-shaded ratings units on the activated stage card, wherein the color-shaded ratings units are color-coded according to the corresponding ratings category.

12. The computer-readable storage media of claim 11, wherein the three or more stage cards enable freeform navigation during the administration of the career history exercise.

13. The computer-readable storage media of claim 11, wherein the receiving of a stage name for the activated stage card comprises accessing stored career history data and retrieving the stage name.

14. The computer-readable storage media of claim 11, wherein the receiving of a stage name for the activated stage card comprises sending a request to a database for information stored as part of career history data stored in the database.

15. The computer-readable storage media of claim 11, wherein the method further comprises:

posting the three or more stage cards with color-shaded ratings units to a webpage associated with the user.

16. The computer-readable storage media of claim 11, wherein the method further comprises:

displaying a list of potential stage names for the activated stage card, wherein the receiving a stage name for the activated stage card comprises receiving a selection from the displayed list.

17. The computer-readable storage media of claim 11, wherein the interpreting user input comprises interpreting a pointer hovering over the one of the three or more displayed stage cards as the activation.

18. The computer-readable storage media of claim 11, wherein the method further comprises:

receiving additional stage names for remaining stage cards; and

providing the additional stage names for display with the remaining stage cards.

19. The computer-readable storage media of claim 18, wherein the method further comprises:

displaying additional ratings units representing the three or more ratings categories on the remaining stage cards;

receiving additional user ratings of the stages corresponding to the remaining stage cards for the three or more ratings categories; and

displaying the additional user ratings as additional color-shaded ratings units on the remaining stage cards, wherein the additional color-shaded ratings units are color-coded according to ratings category.

20. The computer-readable storage media of claim 19, wherein the method further comprises:

receiving a user selection of one of the three or more ratings categories; and

displaying only color-shaded ratings units corresponding to the selected ratings category on the three or more stage cards.
