Abstract

A resorbable bone graft scaffold material, including a plurality of overlapping and interlocking fibers defining a scaffold structure, plurality of pores distributed throughout the scaffold, and a plurality of glass microspheres distributed throughout the pores. The fibers are characterized by fiber diameters ranging from about 5 nanometers to about 100 micrometers, and the fibers are a bioactive, resorbable material. The fibers generally contribute about 20 to about 40 weight percent of the scaffold material, with the microspheres contributing the balance.

Claims

1. A resorbable bone graft scaffold material, comprising:

a plurality of overlapping and interlinking nonporous, polymer-free bioactive ceramic fibers defining a scaffold structure;

a plurality of pores distributed throughout and defined by the scaffold; and

a plurality of bioactive, resorbable spheres distributed in at least some of the respective pores;

wherein each respective sphere is fused to at least one ceramic fiber;

wherein the fibers are characterized by fiber diameters ranging from about 5 nanometers to about 100 micrometers;

wherein the fibers are a bioactive, resorbable material.

2. The resorbable bone graft scaffold material of claim 1 wherein the fibers are composed of a material selected from the group including calcium phosphate, hydroxyapatite, bioactive glass and combinations thereof.

3. The resorbable bone graft scaffold material of claim 1 wherein the fibers are substantially composed of 45S5 bioactive glass.

4. The resorbable bone graft scaffold material of claim 1 wherein the spheres are solid and wherein the spheres have the same composition as the fibers.

5. The resorbable bone graft scaffold material of claim 1 wherein the spheres are hollow defining respective inner core volumes;

and wherein each respective inner core volume is filled with a filling selected from the group including medicines, nutritive supplements, antibiotics, antivirals, vitamins and combinations thereof.

6. The resorbable bone graft scaffold material of claim 1 and further including a plurality of loose spheres, wherein each respective loose sphere is not fused to a fiber.

7. The resorbable bone graft scaffold material of claim 1 wherein the fiber diameters are substantially between about 10 nanometers and about 10 micrometers.

8. The resorbable bone graft scaffold material of claim 1 wherein the fiber diameters are substantially between about 1 micrometer and about 10 micrometers.

9. The resorbable bone graft scaffold material of claim 1 wherein the fiber diameters are substantially less than about 400 nanometers.

10. The resorbable bone graft scaffold material of claim 1 wherein the plurality of overlapping and interlinking fibers are at least partially fused together.

11. The resorbable bone graft scaffold material of claim 1 wherein the spheres have diameters ranging from about 30 microns to about 3 millimeters.

22. A biologically resorbable tissue regrowth scaffold material, comprising:

a porous support matrix further defining a plurality of overlapping and entangled solid, polymer-free bioactive, resorbable ceramic fibers;

a plurality of pores distributed throughout the support matrix; and

a plurality of bioactive, resorbable spheres distributed throughout the support matrix;

wherein each respective fiber has a diameter from about 5 nanometers to about 100 micrometers.

23. The biologically resorbable tissue regrowth scaffold material of claim 22 wherein the fibers are composed of a material selected from the group including calcium phosphate, hydroxyapatite, bioactive glass and combinations thereof.

24. The biologically resorbable tissue regrowth scaffold material of claim 22 wherein the spheres are solid and wherein the spheres have the same composition as the fibers.

25. The biologically resorbable tissue regrowth scaffold material of claim 22 wherein the spheres are hollow defining respective inner volumes;

and wherein each respective inner volume is filled with a filling selected from the group comprising medicines, nutritive supplements, antibiotics, antivirals, vitamins and combinations thereof.

26. The biologically resorbable tissue regrowth scaffold material of claim 22 wherein at least some of the respective spheres are fused to at least one respective fiber.

27. The biologically resorbable tissue regrowth scaffold material of claim 22 wherein the fiber diameters are substantially between about 10 nanometers and about 10 micrometers.

28. A tissue regrowth support material, comprising:

a flexible porous fibrous tissue regrowth support material further comprising a plurality of overlapping and entangled bioactive, biologically resorbable ceramic fibers;

a plurality of pores distributed throughout the support material; and

a plurality of bioactive, resorbable particles distributed throughout the support matrix.
