Abstract

A system for presenting media services is disclosed. A system that incorporates teachings of the present disclosure may include, for example, a portal having a controller element to detect an installation of an Internet Protocol Television (IPTV) media receiver in an IPTV media system and adapt at least a portion of the portal according to the installation. Other embodiments are disclosed.

Claims

1. A computer-readable storage device, comprising executable instructions which, responsive to being executed by a processor, facilitate performance of operations comprising:

submitting a request to a web server via an internet browser to remotely navigate media files stored at a set-top box;

receiving a catalog of the media files from the web server;

presenting the catalog;

submitting a selection of a first media file of the media files from the catalog;

receiving an embedded media player from the web server;

receiving a media stream associated with the selection and originating from the set-top box; and

presenting the media stream at the embedded media player.

2. The computer-readable storage device of claim 1, wherein the media files are stored at a digital video recorder of the set-top box.

3. The computer-readable storage device of claim 1, wherein the catalog is stored at the set-top box.

4. The computer-readable storage device of claim 1, wherein the operations further comprise:

obtaining metadata associated with the media file that is selected; and

presenting information associated with the metadata at a graphic user interface of the internet browser.

5. The computer-readable storage device of claim 4, wherein the metadata comprises one of a name, a date, or a time associated with the media file that is selected.

6. The computer-readable storage device of claim 1, wherein the request to remotely navigate is submitted responsive to a determination that a communication device is roaming in a long-range communication network.

7. The computer-readable storage device of claim 1, wherein the operations further comprise:

receiving a second selection of a selectable graphical user interface element; and

modifying operation of the embedded media player responsive to the second selection.

8. The computer-readable storage device of claim 7, wherein the selectable graphical user interface element commands the set-top box to perform a control operation for a digital video recorder of the set-top box.

9. The computer-readable storage device of claim 1, wherein the web server is associated with a broadcast media communication system.

10. The computer-readable storage device of claim 1, wherein the operations further comprise:

supplying authentication information to a gateway coupled to the set-top box; and

establishing communications with the set-top box responsive to a successful authentication.

11. A media receiver device, comprising:

a memory to store executable instructions; and

a processor communicatively coupled to the memory, wherein the executable instructions, responsive to being executed by the processor, facilitate performance of operations comprising;

transmitting, to a web server, information associated with media files;

receiving, from the web server, a selection of a first media file of the media files;

receiving, from the web server, a command from an embedded media player at a portable communication device to play the first media file; and

transmitting, to the web server, a stream of the first media file for reception and presentation at the embedded media player at the portable communication device.

12. The media receiver device of claim 11, further comprising a digital video recorder, wherein the media files are stored at the digital video recorder.

13. The media receive device of claim 11, wherein the information associated with the media files comprises a catalog of media content stored by the media receiver device.

14. The media receiver device of claim 13, wherein the catalog is presented to the portable communication device as a graphical user interface at an internet browser.

15. The media receiver device of claim 11, wherein the embedded media player has a selectable graphical user interface elements for controlling operations of the media receiver device.

16. The media receiver device of claim 11, wherein the operations further comprise:

transmitting metadata associated with the first media file to the web server, wherein the metadata is presented at the portable communication device.

17. The media receiver device of claim 16, wherein the metadata comprises data associated with the first media file comprising one of a description, an end-user provided name, a recording date, a recording time, a playback duration, or artist identification information.

18. A gateway device, comprising:

a memory to store executable instructions; and

a processor communicatively coupled the memory, wherein the executable instructions, when executed by the processor, facilitate performance of operations comprising;

establishing a communication channel;

transmitting, to a web server, information from a media receiver device, wherein the information is associated with media files stored by the media receiver device;

transmitting, to the media receiver device, a selection from the web server of a first media file of the media files;

transmitting, to the media receiver device, a command from the web server to play the first media file, wherein the command originates from an embedded media player at a portable communication device; and

transmitting, to the web server, a stream of the first media file from the media receiver device for reception and presentation by the embedded media player at the portable communication device.

19. The gateway device of claim 18, wherein the media files are stored at a digital video recorder of the media receiver device.

20. The gateway device of claim 18, wherein the information comprises a catalog of media content that is stored at the media receiver device.
