Abstract

A method is presented for communicating data in a multibeam satellite system utilizing frequency re-use. The method comprises establishing uplink service beams and downlink service beams between a satellite and a plurality of subscriber terminals. A plurality of the uplink service beams are transmitted to the satellite by re-using at least one common uplink frequency channel. A plurality of the downlink service beams are transmitted from the satellite by re-using at least one common downlink frequency channel. The method further comprises establishing at least one uplink feeder beam and at least one downlink feeder beam between the satellite and a gateway terminal. The at least one uplink feeder beam is transmitted to the satellite by further re-using the at least one common uplink frequency channel. The at least one downlink feeder beam is transmitted from the satellite by further re-using the at least one common downlink frequency channel.

2. A method for communicating data in a geosynchronous satellite system, the method comprising:

receiving, at a geosynchronous satellite, a plurality of uplink service signals, at least one of the plurality of uplink service signals including a request from a subscriber terminal for data, the at least one uplink service signal being received using a first uplink frequency range and a first polarization;

frequency translating the uplink service signal at the geosynchronous satellite into a downlink feeder signal;

transmitting the downlink feeder signal to a gateway, the gateway communicatively coupled to a network providing access to the data;

receiving, at the geosynchronous satellite, an uplink feeder signal from the gateway, the uplink feeder signal including a response to the request, the response comprising the data, the uplink feeder signal from the gateway being received using a second uplink frequency range and the first polarization, wherein the first uplink frequency range and the second uplink frequency range contain at least one common frequency;

frequency translating the uplink feeder signal at the geosynchronous satellite into a downlink service signal; and

transmitting the downlink service signal to the subscriber terminal, to provide the response comprising the data to the subscriber terminal,

wherein the subscriber terminal is located within a beam coverage area that is geographically separated from a beam coverage area where the gateway terminal is located.

The method of claim 2, wherein the plurality of uplink service signals include a second uplink service signal from an additional subscriber terminal, wherein the additional subscriber terminal is located within a beam coverage area that is geographically separated from a beam coverage area where the subscriber terminal is located, the second uplink service signal being received using a third uplink frequency range and the first polarization, wherein the first uplink frequency range and the third uplink frequency range contain at least one common frequency.

The method of claim 2, further comprising receiving a second uplink feeder signal from an additional gateway, wherein the additional gateway is located within a beam coverage area that is geographically separated from a beam coverage area where the gateway is located, the second uplink feeder signal being received using a fourth uplink frequency range and the first polarization, wherein the second uplink frequency range and the fourth uplink frequency range contain at least one common frequency.

5. A geosynchronous satellite for communicating data in a geosynchronous satellite system, the communications satellite comprising:

a first frequency translator configured to;

receive a plurality of uplink service signals, at least one of the plurality of uplink service signals including a request from a subscriber terminal for data, the at least one uplink service signal being received using a first uplink frequency range and a first polarization;

frequency translate the uplink service signal into a downlink feeder signal; and

transmit the downlink feeder signal to a gateway, the gateway communicatively coupled to a network providing access to the data; and

a second frequency translator configured to;

receive an uplink feeder signal from the gateway, the uplink feeder signal including a response to the request, the response comprising the data, the uplink feeder signal from the gateway being received using a second uplink frequency range and the first polarization, wherein the first uplink frequency range and the second uplink frequency range contain at least one common frequency;

frequency translate the uplink feeder signal into a downlink service signal; and

transmit the downlink service signal to the subscriber terminal, to provide the response comprising the data to the subscriber terminal,

wherein the subscriber terminal is located within a beam coverage area that is geographically separated from a beam coverage area where the gateway terminal is located.

The geosynchronous satellite of claim 5, wherein the plurality of uplink service signals include a second uplink service signal from an additional subscriber terminal, wherein the additional subscriber terminal is located within a beam coverage area that is geographically separated from a beam coverage area where the subscriber terminal is located, the second uplink service signal being received using a third uplink frequency range and the first polarization, wherein the first uplink frequency range and the third uplink frequency range contain at least one common frequency.

7. The geosynchronous satellite of claim 5, wherein the second frequency translator is further configured to receive a second uplink feeder signal from an additional gateway, wherein the additional gateway is located within a beam coverage area that is geographically separated from a beam coverage area where the gateway is located, the second uplink feeder signal being received using a fourth uplink frequency range and the first polarization, wherein the second uplink frequency range and the fourth uplink frequency range contain at least one common frequency.

8. The geosynchronous satellite of claim 5, wherein the first frequency translator includes a first plurality of downconverters, a first switch, and a first plurality of upconverters.

9. The geosynchronous satellite of claim 5, wherein the second frequency translator includes a second plurality of downconverters, a second switch, and a second plurality of upconverters.

10. A geosynchronous satellite system, the system comprising:

means for receiving a plurality of uplink service signals, at least one of the plurality of uplink service signals including a request from a subscriber terminal for data, the at least one uplink service signal being received using a first uplink frequency range and a first polarization;

means for frequency translating the uplink service signal into a downlink feeder signal;

means for transmitting the downlink feeder signal to a gateway, the gateway communicatively coupled to a network providing access to the data;

means for receiving an uplink feeder signal from the gateway, the uplink feeder signal including a response to the request, the response comprising the data, the uplink feeder signal from the gateway being received using a second uplink frequency range and the first polarization, wherein the first uplink frequency range and the second uplink frequency range contain at least one common frequency;

means for frequency translating the uplink feeder signal into a downlink service signal; and

means for transmitting the downlink service signal to the subscriber terminal, to provide the response comprising the data to the subscriber terminal,

wherein the subscriber terminal is located within a beam coverage area that is geographically separated from a beam coverage area where the gateway terminal is located.

11. The system of claim 10, wherein the plurality of uplink service signals include a second uplink service signal from an additional subscriber terminal, wherein the additional subscriber terminal is located within a beam coverage area that is geographically separated from a beam coverage area where the subscriber terminal is located, the second uplink service signal being received using a third uplink frequency range and the first polarization, wherein the first uplink frequency range and the third uplink frequency range contain at least one common frequency.

12. The system of claim 10, further comprising means for receiving a second uplink feeder signal from an additional gateway, wherein the additional gateway is located within a beam coverage area that is geographically separated from a beam coverage area where the gateway is located, the second uplink feeder signal being received using a fourth uplink frequency range and the first polarization, wherein the second uplink frequency range and the fourth uplink frequency range contain at least one common frequency.

13. A method for communicating data in a geosynchronous satellite system, the method comprising:

receiving, at a geosynchronous satellite, a plurality of uplink service signals, at least one of the plurality of uplink service signals including a request from a subscriber terminal for data;

frequency translating the uplink service signal at the geosynchronous satellite into a downlink feeder signal;

transmitting the downlink feeder signal to a gateway, the gateway communicatively coupled to a network providing access to the data, the downlink feeder signal being transmitted using a first downlink frequency range and a first polarization;

receiving, at the geosynchronous satellite, an uplink feeder signal from the gateway, the uplink feeder signal including a response to the request, the response comprising the data;

frequency translating the uplink feeder signal at the geosynchronous satellite into a downlink service signal; and

transmitting the downlink service signal to the subscriber terminal, to provide the response comprising the data to the subscriber terminal, the downlink service signal being transmitted using a second downlink frequency range and the first polarization, wherein the first downlink frequency range and the second downlink frequency range contain at least one common frequency,

wherein the subscriber terminal is located within a beam coverage area that is geographically separated from a beam coverage area where the gateway terminal is located.

14. The method of claim 13, wherein the plurality of uplink service signals include a second uplink service signal from an additional subscriber terminal, and further comprising frequency translating the second uplink service signal into a second downlink feeder signal, wherein the additional subscriber terminal is located within a beam coverage area that is geographically separated from a beam coverage area where the subscriber terminal is located, the second downlink feeder signal using a third downlink frequency range and the first polarization, wherein the first downlink frequency range and the third downlink frequency range contain at least one common frequency.

15. The method of claim 13, further comprising receiving a second uplink feeder signal from an additional gateway and frequency translating the second uplink feeder signal into a second downlink service signal, wherein the additional gateway is located within a beam coverage area that is geographically separated from a beam coverage area where the gateway is located, the second downlink service signal using a fourth downlink frequency range and the first polarization, wherein the second downlink frequency range and the fourth downlink frequency range contain at least one common frequency.

16. A geosynchronous satellite for communicating data in a geosynchronous satellite system, the communications satellite comprising:

a first frequency translator configured to;

receive a plurality of uplink service signals, at least one of the plurality of uplink service signals including a request from a subscriber terminal for data;

frequency translate the uplink service signal into a downlink feeder signal; and

transmit the downlink feeder signal to a gateway, the gateway communicatively coupled to a network providing access to the data, the downlink feeder signal being transmitted using a first downlink frequency range and a first polarization; and

a second frequency translator configured to;

receive an uplink feeder signal from the gateway, the uplink feeder signal including a response to the request, the response comprising the data;

frequency translate the uplink feeder signal into a downlink service signal; and

transmit the downlink service signal to the subscriber terminal, to provide the response comprising the data to the subscriber terminal, the downlink service signal being transmitted using a second downlink frequency range and the first polarization, wherein the first downlink frequency range and the second downlink frequency range contain at least one common frequency,

wherein the subscriber terminal is located within a beam coverage area that is geographically separated from a beam coverage area where the gateway terminal is located.

17. The geosynchronous satellite of claim 16, wherein the plurality of uplink service signals include a second uplink service signal from an additional subscriber terminal, and wherein the first frequency translator is further configured to frequency translate the second uplink service signal into a second downlink feeder signal, wherein the additional subscriber terminal is located within a beam coverage area that is geographically separated from a beam coverage area where the subscriber terminal is located, the second downlink feeder signal using a third downlink frequency range and the first polarization, wherein the first downlink frequency range and the third downlink frequency range contain at least one common frequency.

18. The geosynchronous satellite of claim 16, wherein the second frequency translator is further configured to receive a second uplink feeder signal from an additional gateway and frequency translate the second uplink feeder signal into a second downlink service signal, wherein the additional gateway is located within a beam coverage area that is geographically separated from a beam coverage area where the gateway is located, the second downlink service signal using a fourth downlink frequency range and the first polarization, wherein the second downlink frequency range and the fourth downlink frequency range contain at least one common frequency.

19. The geosynchronous satellite of claim 16, wherein the first frequency translator includes a first plurality of downconverters, a first switch, and a first plurality of upconverters.

20. The geosynchronous satellite of claim 16, wherein the second frequency translator includes a second plurality of downconverters, a second switch, and a second plurality of upconverters.

21. A geosynchronous satellite system, the system comprising:

means for receiving a plurality of uplink service signals, at least one of the plurality of uplink service signals including a request from a subscriber terminal for data;

means for frequency translating the uplink service signal into a downlink feeder signal;

means for transmitting the downlink feeder signal to a gateway, the gateway communicatively coupled to a network providing access to the data, the downlink feeder signal being transmitted using a first downlink frequency range and a first polarization;

means for receiving an uplink feeder signal from the gateway, the uplink feeder signal including a response to the request, the response comprising the data;

means for frequency translating the uplink feeder signal into a downlink service signal; and

means for transmitting the downlink service signal to the subscriber terminal, to provide the response comprising the data to the subscriber terminal, the downlink service signal being transmitted using a second downlink frequency range and the first polarization, wherein the first downlink frequency range and the second downlink frequency range contain at least one common frequency,

wherein the subscriber terminal is located within a beam coverage area that is geographically separated from a beam coverage area where the gateway terminal is located.

22. The system of claim 21, wherein the plurality of uplink service signals include a second uplink service signal from an additional subscriber terminal, and further comprising means for frequency translating the second uplink service signal into a second downlink feeder signal, wherein the additional subscriber terminal is located within a beam coverage area that is geographically separated from a beam coverage area where the subscriber terminal is located, the second downlink feeder signal using a third downlink frequency range and the first polarization, wherein the first downlink frequency range and the third downlink frequency range contain at least one common frequency.

23. The system of claim 21, further comprising means for receiving a second uplink feeder signal from an additional gateway and means for frequency translating the second uplink feeder signal into a second downlink service signal, wherein the additional gateway is located within a beam coverage area that is geographically separated from a beam coverage area where the gateway is located, the second downlink service signal using a fourth downlink frequency range and the first polarization, wherein the second downlink frequency range and the fourth downlink frequency range contain at least one common frequency.

24. A method for communicating data in a geosynchronous satellite system, the method comprising:

receiving, at a geosynchronous satellite, a plurality of uplink service signals, at least one of the plurality of uplink service signals including a request from a subscriber terminal for data, the at least one uplink service signal being received using a first uplink frequency range and a first polarization;

frequency translating the uplink service signal at the geosynchronous satellite into a downlink feeder signal;

transmitting the downlink feeder signal to a gateway, the gateway communicatively coupled to a network providing access to the data, the downlink feeder signal being transmitted using a first downlink frequency range and the first polarization;

receiving, at the geosynchronous satellite, an uplink feeder signal from the gateway, the uplink feeder signal including a response to the request, the response comprising the data, the uplink feeder signal from the gateway being received using a second uplink frequency range and the first polarization, wherein the first uplink frequency range and the second uplink frequency range contain at least one common frequency;

frequency translating the uplink feeder signal at the geosynchronous satellite into a downlink service signal; and

transmitting the downlink service signal to the subscriber terminal, to provide the response comprising the data to the subscriber terminal, the downlink service signal being transmitted using a second downlink frequency range and the first polarization, wherein the first downlink frequency range and the second downlink frequency range contain at least one common frequency,

wherein the subscriber terminal is located within a beam coverage area that is geographically separated from a beam coverage area where the gateway terminal is located.

25. The method of claim 24, wherein the plurality of uplink service signals include a second uplink service signal from an additional subscriber terminal, wherein the additional subscriber terminal is located within a beam coverage area that is geographically separated from a beam coverage area where the subscriber terminal is located, the second uplink service signal being received using a third uplink frequency range and the first polarization, wherein the first uplink frequency range and the third uplink frequency range contain at least one common frequency.

26. The method of claim 24, further comprising receiving a second uplink feeder signal from an additional gateway, wherein the additional gateway is located within a beam coverage area that is geographically separated from a beam coverage area where the gateway is located, the second uplink feeder signal being received using a fourth uplink frequency range and the first polarization, wherein the second uplink frequency range and the fourth uplink frequency range contain at least one common frequency.

27. The method of claim 24, wherein the plurality of uplink service signals include a second uplink service signal from an additional subscriber terminal, and further comprising frequency translating the second uplink service signal into a second downlink feeder signal, wherein the additional subscriber terminal is located within a beam coverage area that is geographically separated from a beam coverage area where the subscriber terminal is located, the second downlink feeder signal using a third downlink frequency range and the first polarization, wherein the first downlink frequency range and the third downlink frequency range contain at least one common frequency.

28. The method of claim 24, further comprising receiving a second uplink feeder signal from an additional gateway and frequency translating the second uplink feeder signal into a second downlink service signal, wherein the additional gateway is located within a beam coverage area that is geographically separated from a beam coverage area where the gateway is located, the second downlink service signal using a fourth downlink frequency range and the first polarization, wherein the second downlink frequency range and the fourth downlink frequency range contain at least one common frequency.

29. A geosynchronous satellite for communicating data in a geosynchronous satellite system, the communications satellite comprising:

a first frequency translator configured to;

receive a plurality of uplink service signals, at least one of the plurality of uplink service signals including a request from a subscriber terminal for data, the at least one uplink service signal being received using a first uplink frequency range and a first polarization;

frequency translate the uplink service signal into a downlink feeder signal; and

transmit the downlink feeder signal to a gateway, the gateway communicatively coupled to a network providing access to the data, the downlink feeder signal being transmitted using a first downlink frequency range and the first polarization; and

a second frequency translator configured to;

receive an uplink feeder signal from the gateway, the uplink feeder signal including a response to the request, the response comprising the data, the uplink feeder signal from the gateway being received using a second uplink frequency range and the first polarization, wherein the first uplink frequency range and the second uplink frequency range contain at least one common frequency;

frequency translate the uplink feeder signal into a downlink service signal; and

transmit the downlink service signal to the subscriber terminal, to provide the response comprising the data to the subscriber terminal, the downlink service signal being transmitted using a second downlink frequency range and the first polarization, wherein the first downlink frequency range and the second downlink frequency range contain at least one common frequency,

wherein the subscriber terminal is located within a beam coverage area that is geographically separated from a beam coverage area where the gateway terminal is located.

30. The geosynchronous satellite of claim 29, wherein the plurality of uplink service signals include a second uplink service signal from an additional subscriber terminal, wherein the additional subscriber terminal is located within a beam coverage area that is geographically separated from a beam coverage area where the subscriber terminal is located, the second uplink service signal being received using a third uplink frequency range and the first polarization, wherein the first uplink frequency range and the third uplink frequency range contain at least one common frequency.

31. The geosynchronous satellite of claim 29, wherein the second frequency translator is further configured to receive a second uplink feeder signal from an additional gateway, wherein the additional gateway is located within a beam coverage area that is geographically separated from a beam coverage area where the gateway is located, the second uplink feeder signal being received using a fourth uplink frequency range and the first polarization, wherein the second uplink frequency range and the fourth uplink frequency range contain at least one common frequency.

32. The geosynchronous satellite of claim 29, wherein the plurality of uplink service signals include a second uplink service signal from an additional subscriber terminal, and wherein the first frequency translator is further configured to frequency translate the second uplink service signal into a second downlink feeder signal, wherein the additional subscriber terminal is located within a beam coverage area that is geographically separated from a beam coverage area where the subscriber terminal is located, the second downlink feeder signal using a third downlink frequency range and the first polarization, wherein the first downlink frequency range and the third downlink frequency range contain at least one common frequency.

33. The geosynchronous satellite of claim 29, wherein the second frequency translator is further configured to receive a second uplink feeder signal from an additional gateway and frequency translate the second uplink feeder signal into a second downlink service signal, wherein the additional gateway is located within a beam coverage area that is geographically separated from a beam coverage area where the gateway is located, the second downlink service signal using a fourth downlink frequency range and the first polarization, wherein the second downlink frequency range and the fourth downlink frequency range contain at least one common frequency.

34. The geosynchronous satellite of claim 29, wherein the first frequency translator includes a first plurality of downconverters, a first switch, and a first plurality of upconverters.

35. The geosynchronous satellite of claim 29, wherein the second frequency translator includes a second plurality of downconverters, a second switch, and a second plurality of upconverters.

36. A geosynchronous satellite system, the system comprising:

means for receiving a plurality of uplink service signals, at least one of the plurality of uplink service signals including a request from a subscriber terminal for data, the at least one uplink service signal being received using a first uplink frequency range and a first polarization;

means for frequency translating the uplink service signal into a downlink feeder signal;

means for transmitting the downlink feeder signal to a gateway, the gateway communicatively coupled to a network providing access to the data, the downlink feeder signal being transmitted using a first downlink frequency range and the first polarization;

means for receiving an uplink feeder signal from the gateway, the uplink feeder signal including a response to the request, the response comprising the data, the uplink feeder signal from the gateway being received using a second uplink frequency range and the first polarization, wherein the first uplink frequency range and the second uplink frequency range contain at least one common frequency;

means for frequency translating the uplink feeder signal into a downlink service signal; and

means for transmitting the downlink service signal to the subscriber terminal, to provide the response comprising the data to the subscriber terminal, the downlink service signal being transmitted using a second downlink frequency range and the first polarization, wherein the first downlink frequency range and the second downlink frequency range contain at least one common frequency,

wherein the subscriber terminal is located within a beam coverage area that is geographically separated from a beam coverage area where the gateway terminal is located.

37. The system of claim 36, wherein the plurality of uplink service signals include a second uplink service signal from an additional subscriber terminal, wherein the additional subscriber terminal is located within a beam coverage area that is geographically separated from a beam coverage area where the subscriber terminal is located, the second uplink service signal being received using a third uplink frequency range and the first polarization, wherein the first uplink frequency range and the third uplink frequency range contain at least one common frequency.

38. The system of claim 36, further comprising means for receiving a second uplink feeder signal from an additional gateway, wherein the additional gateway is located within a beam coverage area that is geographically separated from a beam coverage area where the gateway is located, the second uplink feeder signal being received using a fourth uplink frequency range and the first polarization, wherein the second uplink frequency range and the fourth uplink frequency range contain at least one common frequency.

39. The system of claim 36, wherein the plurality of uplink service signals include a second uplink service signal from an additional subscriber terminal, and further comprising means for frequency translating the second uplink service signal into a second downlink feeder signal, wherein the additional subscriber terminal is located within a beam coverage area that is geographically separated from a beam coverage area where the subscriber terminal is located, the second downlink feeder signal using a third downlink frequency range and the first polarization, wherein the first downlink frequency range and the third downlink frequency range contain at least one common frequency.

40. The system of claim 36, further comprising means for receiving a second uplink feeder signal from an additional gateway and means for frequency translating the second uplink feeder signal into a second downlink service signal, wherein the additional gateway is located within a beam coverage area that is geographically separated from a beam coverage area where the gateway is located, the second downlink service signal using a fourth downlink frequency range and the first polarization, wherein the second downlink frequency range and the fourth downlink frequency range contain at least one common frequency.
