Abstract

A device including a port barrel, a ball spring, a first enclosure part, and a mounting plate disposed adjacent to the first enclosure part is disclosed. The mounting plate includes a mounting hole. The port barrel is arranged to extend through the mounting hole, and the ball spring is arranged between an inner surface of the mounting hole and an exterior surface of the port barrel.

Claims

1. An apparatus comprising:

a port barrel;

a ball spring;

a first enclosure part; and

a mounting plate disposed adjacent to the first enclosure part and comprising a mounting hole,

wherein;

the port barrel is arranged extending through the mounting hole, and

the ball spring is arranged between an inner surface of the mounting hole and an exterior surface of the port barrel.

2. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein;

the port barrel comprises a double flange, and

the ball spring is arranged in an interior of the double flange.

3. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the mounting plate extends from the first enclosure in a direction normal to a surface of the first enclosure, and the ball spring is arranged such that a radius of the ball spring is substantially parallel to the direction in which the mounting plate extends.

4. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the port barrel comprises an optical port for at least one of a receiver optical sub-assembly or a transmitter optical sub-assembly.

5. The apparatus of claim 4, further comprising:

a second enclosure part; and

a printed circuit board electrically connected to at least one of the receiver optical sub-assembly or the transmitter optical sub-assembly,

wherein the first enclosure part and the second enclosure part enclose at least a portion of the printed circuit board, the port barrel, and at least one of the receiver optical sub-assembly or the transmitter optical sub-assembly.

6. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the ball spring supports the port barrel in the mounting hole.

7. The apparatus of claim 1 further comprising:

a first clip contacting the mounting plate on a first side of the mounting plate; and

a second clip contacting the mounting plate on a second side of the mounting plate,

wherein the first clip and the second clip maintain the axial position of the port barrel relative to the mounting plate.

8. The apparatus of claim 7 wherein the second clip comprises a connector cage.

9. The apparatus of claim 1, further comprising:

a second port barrel; and

a second ball spring,

wherein;

the mounting plate comprises a second mounting hole;

the second port barrel is arranged extending through the second mounting hole; and

the second ball spring is arranged between an inner surface of the second mounting hole and an exterior surface of the second port barrel.

10. The apparatus of claim 9, wherein the port barrel comprises an optical port of a receiver optical sub-assembly and the second port barrel comprises an optical port of a transmitter optical sub-assembly.

11. A method comprising:

extending a port barrel through a mounting hole of a mounting plate, wherein the mounting plate is disposed adjacent to a first enclosure part;

arranging a ball spring between an inner surface of the mounting hole and an exterior surface of the port barrel; and

placing a second enclosure part in sealing contact with the first enclosure part such that the port barrel is at least partially enclosed by the first enclosure part and the second enclosure part.

12. The method of claim 11, wherein arranging the ball spring comprises arranging the ball spring in an interior of a double flange of the port barrel.

13. The method of claim 12, further comprising:

arranging a first clip on a first side of the mounting hole and arranging a second clip on a second side of the mounting hole such that the ball spring is enclosed between the inner surface of the port mounting hole, the interior of the double flange, the first clip and the second clip.

14. The method of claim 12, wherein arranging the ball spring between the inner surface of the mounting hole and an interior of the double flange comprises arranging the ball spring such that the port barrel is supported in the mounting hole by the ball spring.

15. The method of claim 12, wherein arranging the ball spring between the inner surface of the mounting hole and the interior of the double flange comprises:

placing a first tool on a first side of the mounting plate to extend the port barrel through the mounting hole so that the double flange extends past the mounting plate on a second side opposite the first side;

expanding and arranging the ball spring in the interior of the double flange with a second tool;

removing the first tool so that the port barrel travels in the direction of the first side to arrange the ball spring between the inner surface of the mounting hole and the interior of the double flange;

inserting a first clip on the first side of the mounting plate; and

inserting a second clip on the second side of the mounting plate to enclose the ball spring within the first clip, the second clip, the inner surface of the mounting hole, and the interior of the double flange.

16. The method of claim 11, wherein extending the port barrel comprises arranging at least one of a receiver optical sub-assembly or a transmitter optical sub-assembly integrally formed with the port barrel on the first enclosure part.

17. The method of claim 16, further comprising arranging a printed circuit board on the first side of the mounting plate;

and

electrically connecting the printed circuit board to the at least one of the receiver optical sub-assembly or the transmitter optical sub-assembly.

18. The method claim 11, wherein inserting the second clip comprises inserting a second clip comprising a connector cage.

19. The method of claim 18, wherein placing the second enclosure part in sealing contact with the first enclosure part comprises placing the second enclosure part such that the port barrel is partially enclosed by the first and second enclosure parts, and the connector cage provides access to the port barrel.

20. The method of claim 11,

extending a second port barrel through a second mounting hole in the mounting plate;

and

arranging a second ball spring between an inner surface of the second mounting hole and an exterior surface of the port barrel.

21. The method of claim 20, wherein:

extending a port barrel comprises arranging a port of a receiver optical sub-assembly integrally formed with the port barrel on the first enclosure part; and

extending the second port barrel comprises arranging a transmitter optical sub-assembly integrally formed with the second port barrel on the first enclosure part.

22. A method comprising:

combining an electro-optical sub-assembly with an optical port barrel comprising a double flange;

electrically connecting a printed circuit board to the electro-optical sub assembly;

electromagnetically isolating a printed circuit board, wherein electromagnetically isolating the printed circuit board comprises;

arranging the printed circuit board and the electro-optical sub-assembly within a first enclosure part;

extending the port barrel through a mounting hole of a mounting plate, wherein the mounting plate is disposed adjacent to the first enclosure part;

arranging a ball spring between an inner surface of the mounting hole and an interior of the double flange; and

placing a second enclosure part in sealing contact with the first enclosure part such that the printed circuit board and the electro-optical sub-assembly are enclosed by the first enclosure part, the second enclosure part, the mounting plate, the ball spring and the port barrel.

23. The method of claim 22, wherein arranging the ball spring between the inner surface of the mounting hole and the interior of the double flange comprises supporting the port barrel in the mounting hole with the ball spring.
