Abstract
A tack device for holding plaque against blood vessel walls in treating atherosclerotic occlusive disease can be formed as a thin, annular band of durable, flexible material. The tack device may also have a plurality of barbs or anchoring points on its outer annular periphery. The annular band can have a length in the axial direction of the blood vessel walls that is about equal to or less than its diameter as installed in the blood vessel. A preferred method is to perform angioplasty with a drug eluting balloon as a first step, and if there is any dissection to the blood vessel caused by the balloon angioplasty, one or more tack devices may be installed to tack down the dissected area of the blood vessel surface.

2. A method of further treating atherosclerotic occlusive disease in a blood vessel after a balloon angioplasty, comprising:

advancing a plurality of tacks in a compressed state to a plaque dissection at a treatment area in a blood vessel after a balloon angioplasty has been performed at the treatment area, each of the tacks of the plurality of tacks comprising an annular band and a plurality of barbs on an outer annular periphery, and extending annularly around a longitudinal axis and extending longitudinally between a distal most end and a proximal most end which defines a tack width; expanding a first tack of the plurality of tacks to hold the plaque dissection against a wall of the blood vessel; and expanding a second tack of the plurality of tacks to hold the plaque dissection against the wall of the blood vessel, the second tack spaced away from the first tack a distance equal to at least the tack width of the second tack such that a portion of the treatment area between the first and second tacks that has been treated by the balloon angioplasty includes diseased tissue that is not covered by a tack. - View Dependent Claims (3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10)

advancing a plurality of tacks to a treatment area in a blood vessel after a balloon angioplasty has been performed at the treatment area, each of the tacks of the plurality of tacks having a distal most end and a proximal most end along a longitudinal axis, and having a tack width defined by the distance between the distal most end and the proximal most end; expanding a first tack of the plurality of tacks against a wall of the blood vessel at the treatment area; and expanding a second tack of the plurality of tacks against the wall of the blood vessel at the treatment area, the second tack spaced away from the first tack a distance equal to at least the tack width of the second tack such that a portion of the treatment area between the first and second tacks that has been treated by the balloon angioplasty includes diseased tissue that is not covered by a tack. - View Dependent Claims (12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19)
