Abstract

An implant assembly for a long bone is adapted to support an exo-prosthesis. The assembly includes a stem, a subdermal component and a percutaneous post. The stem has a proximal end that is adapted to be received in a surgically prepared medullary canal of the long bone, and a distal end having a surface that is adapted to promote bone ingrowth. The subdermal component includes a proximal portion that is adapted for attachment to the distal end of the stem, and a fixation surface that is adapted to promote soft tissue fixation. The percutaneous post has a proximal end that is adapted to be attached to the subdermal component.

Claims

1. An implant assembly for a long bone having a longitudinal axis, which assembly is adapted to support an exo-prosthesis, said assembly comprising:

(a) a stem having;

(i) a proximal end that is adapted to be received in a surgically prepared medullary canal of the long bone;

(ii) a distal end having a surface that is adapted to promote bone ingrowth;

(b) a subdermal component having a proximal portion that is adapted for attachment to the distal end of the stem and a fixation surface that is adapted to promote soft tissue fixation;

(c) a percutaneous post having a proximal end that is adapted to be attached to the subdermal component.

wherein at least one of the distal end of the stem and the proximal portion of the subdermal component defines a collar that is adapted to engage an osteotomy created by a cut through the long bone that is generally perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the long bone.

2. The implant assembly of claim 1:

(a) which includes an adapter having;

(i) a proximal end;

(ii) a distal end that is adapted to be attached to the exo-prosthesis;

(b) wherein the percutaneous post has a distal end to which the proximal end of the adapter is adapted to be attached.

The implant assembly of claim 1 wherein the proximal portion of the subdermal component includes a collar that has a radial dimension that is greater than the radial dimension of the distal end of the stem, which proximal portion defines a collar that is adapted to engage an osteotomy created by a cut through the long bone that is generally perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the long bone.

4. The implant assembly of claim 1 wherein the subdermal component includes a distal ring that has a radial dimension that is greater than that of the proximal portion of the subdermal component.

5. The implant assembly of claim 1 wherein at least a portion of the subdermal component has a convex profile.

6. The implant assembly of claim 1 wherein at least a portion of the subdermal component has a concave profile.

7. The implant assembly of claim 1 wherein the stem includes a plurality of splines.

8. The implant assembly of claim 1 wherein the stem includes a central slot.

9. The implant assembly of claim 1 which includes a stoma shield that is adapted to be located adjacent the distal end of the subdermal component.

10. The implant assembly of claim 1 wherein the surface of the distal end of the stem comprises a porous structure that is adapted to support osseointegration.

11. The implant assembly of claim 1, wherein the subdermal component comprises:

(a) a proximal portion that is adapted for attachment to the stem, said proximal portion having a low energy surface that is adapted to inhibit bio-adhesion;

(b) a distal portion having fixation surface that is adapted to promote soft tissue fixation;

(c) an intermediate portion between the distal portion and the proximal portion, said intermediate portion having a transition surface between the fixation surface and the low energy surface.

12. The implant assembly of claim 11 wherein the low energy surface of the proximal portion of the subdermal component comprises a surface that has been treated to increase its hydrophobic characteristics.

13. The implant assembly of claim 11 wherein the low energy surface of the proximal portion of the subdermal component is obtained by a process selected from the group consisting of abrasive blasting, burnishing, grinding, buffing, chemical vapor deposition and combinations of such processes.

14. The implant assembly of claim 11 wherein the fixation surface of the distal portion of the subdermal component is adapted to facilitate soft tissue integration.

15. The implant assembly of claim 14 wherein the fixation surface of the distal portion of the subdermal component comprises a porous structure that is adapted to support osseointegration.

16. The implant assembly of claim 11 wherein the transition surface of the intermediate portion of the subdermal component comprises a surface that has been treated to increase its hydrophobic characteristics relative to the fixation surface.

17. The implant assembly of claim 11 wherein the transition surface of the intermediate portion of the subdermal component is obtained by a process selected from the group consisting of abrasive blasting, burnishing, grinding, buffing, chemical vapor deposition and combinations of such processes.

18. An implant assembly for a long bone having a longitudinal axis, which assembly is adapted to support an exo-prosthesis, said assembly comprising:

(a) a stem having;

(i) a proximal end that is adapted to be received in a surgically prepared medullary canal of the long bone;

(ii) a distal end having a surface that is adapted to promote bone ingrowth;

(iii) a threaded bore in the distal end;

(b) a subdermal component that is adapted for attachment to the distal end of the stem, said subdermal component comprising;

(i) a proximal portion that is adapted for attachment to the distal end of the stem, said proximal portion having a low energy surface that is adapted to inhibit bio-adhesion;

(ii) a distal portion having a distal end and a fixation surface that is adapted to promote soft tissue fixation;

(iii) an intermediate portion between the distal portion and the proximal portion, said intermediate portion having a transition surface between the low energy surface and the fixation surface;

(v) a tapered central bore;

(c) a percutaneous post that is adapted for attachment to the distal end of the subdermal component, said percutaneous post comprising;

(i) a proximal end that is tapered and adapted to be received in the tapered central bore of the subdermal component;

(ii) a distal end that is provided with a threaded bore;

(iii) a central bore having a proximal portion of a first diameter and a distal portion of a second diameter, wherein the second diameter is larger than the first diameter;

(d) an adapter having a central bore that is adapted to receive the distal end of the percutaneous post;

(e) an assembly bolt comprising;

(i) a proximal portion with a threaded proximal end, said proximal portion having a proximal diameter that is adapted to be received in the proximal portion of the central bore of the percutaneous post and said threaded proximal end being adapted to engage the threaded bore in the distal end of the stem;

(ii) a distal portion having a distal end and a distal diameter that is adapted to be received in the distal portion of the central bore of the percutaneous post;

(f) an adapter bolt that is threaded to engage the threaded bore in the distal end of the percutaneous post.
