Abstract

Among other things, a user of a mobile device who is delivering an ordered product from a store to a customer at a location can confirm that the customer is a proper person to receive the ordered product.

Claims

1. A method comprising

enabling a user of a mobile device who is delivering an ordered product from a store to a customer at a location to confirm that the customer is a proper person to receive the ordered product.

2. The method of claim 1 in which the ordered product is one that may legally be delivered only to a customer who meets a criterion, and the user of the mobile device who is delivering the product is enabled to determine to a legally sufficient degree that the customer to whom the product is being delivered meets the criterion.

3. The method of claim 2 in which the criterion comprises the customer'"'"'s age.

4. The method of claim 2 in which the determining that the customer meets the criterion comprises verifying that an item of identification possessed by the customer is authentic.

5. The method of claim 4 in which the item of identification comprises a driver'"'"'s license.

6. The method of claim 1 in which the verifying comprises scanning the item of identification.

7. The method of claim 1 in which the verifying comprises processing information about the item of identification on the mobile device or remotely.

8. The method of claim 1 comprising presenting information about forensic checks is presented to the user.

9. The method of claim 8 in which the information presented comprises images of at least portions of model identification devices of a kind presented by the user.

10. The method of claim 8 in which the information is updated from a server.

11. The method of claim 6 comprises deriving data from the scanning of the item.

12. The method of claim 11 in which the data comprises a hex-code derived from a bar code.

13. An apparatus comprising

a mobile device,

a scanner to scan an identification device presented by a customer to whom a product is to be delivered from a store at a location,

an application to run on the mobile device to identify data related to the customer from the scan of the identification device, and

a user interface to be displayed on a display of the mobile device to aid a user of the mobile device in verifying the identification device.

14. The method of claim 13 in which the product is one that may legally be delivered only to a customer who meets a criterion, and the user interface aids the user to determine to a legally sufficient degree that the customer to whom the product is being delivered meets the criterion.

15. The method of claim 14 in which the criterion comprises the customer'"'"'s age.

16. The method of claim 14 in which the determining that the customer meets the criterion comprises verifying that the identification device possessed by the customer is authentic.

17. The method of claim 16 in which the identification device comprises a driver'"'"'s license.

18. The method of claim 14 in which the verifying comprises processing information about the item of identification on the mobile device or remotely.

19. The method of claim 13 in which the user interface is to present images of at least portions of model identification devices of a kind presented by the user.

20. The method of claim 18 in which the information is updated from a server.

21. The method of claim 14 in which the data comprises a hex-code derived from a bar code.

22. A method comprising

at a mobile device, capturing information about an identification device presented by a person who is to be verified,

processing the information relative to known information about characteristics of officially issued identification devices to make a determination whether the presented device is, within a forensic standard, an officially issued identification device associated with the person who presented the device, and

providing an indication whether the presented device is determined to be the officially issued identification device.

23. The method of claim 22 in which the identification device comprises a card.

24. The method of claim 22 in which the identification device comprises a driver'"'"'s license.

25. The method of claim 22 in which the information about the identification device comprises a scan of the device.

26. The method of claim 22 in which the information about the identification device is humanly readable.

27. The method of claim 22 in which the information about the identification device is not humanly readable.

28. The method of claim 22 in which the information is processed relative to the known information at the mobile device.

29. The method of claim 22 in which the information about the identification device is sent to a server where the information is processed relative to the known information.

30. The method of claim 22 in which the information about the identification device is characterized and verified using processes that are run locally on the mobile device.

31. The method of claim 22 in which the known information comprises information provided by an official issuer of the identification devices.

32. The method of claim 31 in which the known information comprises known checks.

33. The method of claim 31 in which the known information comprises a hex-code conversion of a bar code on the identification device.

34. The method of claim 22 comprising storing at least some of the known information on the mobile device.

35. The method of claim 34 comprising updating at least some of the known information from time to time from a server to the mobile device.

36. The method of claim 22 comprising storing at least some of the known information on a server accessible to the mobile device.

37. The method of claim 22 in which the forensic standard comprises a standard established by a party that enforces a requirement associated with the presentation of the device.

38. The method of claim 37 in which the standard comprises the adequacy of the presented device to establish the age of the person who presented it as permitting the person to buy alcohol.

39. The method of claim 37 in which the indication is presented at the mobile device.

40. The method of claim 37 in which the indication is presented at a location remote from the mobile device.

41. An apparatus comprising

a mobile device that includes

a device for capturing information about an identification device presented by a person who is to be verified,

a processor to run an application on the mobile device to process the information captured by the device relative to known information about characteristics of officially issued identification devices to make a determination whether the presented device is, within a forensic standard, an officially issued identification device associated with the person who presented the device, and

a user interface device to receive information from a user of the mobile device about the person presenting the identification device or about the person or both, and to provide to the user of the mobile device an indication whether the presented device is determined to be the officially issued identification device.

42. The apparatus of claim 41 in which the identification device comprises a card.

43. The apparatus of claim 41 in which the identification device comprises a driver'"'"'s license.

44. The apparatus of claim 41 in which the information about the identification device comprises a scan of the device.

45. The apparatus of claim 41 in which the information about the identification device is humanly readable.

46. The apparatus of claim 41 in which the information about the identification device is not humanly readable.

47. The apparatus of claim 41 in which the information is processed relative to the known information at the mobile device.

48. The apparatus of claim 41 in which the information about the identification device is sent to a server where the information is processed relative to the known information.

49. The apparatus of claim 41 in which the known information comprises information provided an official issuer of the identification devices.

50. The apparatus of claim 41 comprising storing at least some of the known information on the mobile device.

51. The apparatus of claim 41 in which the forensic standard comprises a standard established by a party that enforces a requirement associated with the presentation of the device.

52. The apparatus of claim 41 in which the standard comprises the adequacy of the presented device to establish the age of the person who presented it as permitting the person to buy alcohol.

53. The apparatus of claim 41 in which the indication is presented at the mobile device.

54. The apparatus of claim 41 in which the indication is presented at a location remote from the mobile device.

55. An apparatus comprising

a mobile device, and

a scanner coupled to the mobile phone and arranged to scan identification devices presented by people for use in verification of the identification of the people,

the mobile device to run an application that accumulates data related to a transaction that occurs in connection with the verification of identity.

56. An apparatus comprising

a mobile app to run on a mobile device to provide local or online access by the mobile device to information that enables the user of the mobile device to make a forensically sufficient verification that a person who has presented identification is a proper person to engage in a transaction at a location based on respective regulatory requirements that apply to such transactions at any such location.

57. The apparatus of claim 56 in which the information comprises an electronic guide to the regulatory requirements at any such location.
