Abstract

An optical system configured to detect optical signals during imaging sessions. The optical system includes an objective lens that has a collecting end that is positioned proximate to a sample and configured to receive optical signals therefrom. The optical system also includes a removable path compensator that is configured to be located at an imaging position between the collecting end of the objective lens and the sample. The path compensator adjusts an optical path of the light emissions when in the imaging position. Also, the optical system includes a transfer device that is configured to move the path compensator. The transfer device locates the path compensator at the imaging position for a first imaging session and removes the path compensator from the imaging position for a second imaging session.

2. An assay system for biological or chemical analysis, the assay system comprising:

an optical assembly having a plurality of optical components, the optical assembly configured to receive first and second optical signals from different first and second samples, respectively, and direct the first and second optical signals to a detector assembly for detection;

an optics adjustment system configured to selectively move at least one of the optical components to change the optical assembly between a first collective arrangement for detecting the first optical signals and a different second collective arrangement for detecting the second optical signals; and

a system controller configured to control the optics adjustment system, wherein each of the first and second samples in configured to have a priority status during operation of the assay system, the system controller configured to control the optics adjustment system to change the optical assembly to the first collective arrangement or to the second collective arrangement based on the priority statuses of the first and second samples.

The assay system of claim 2, wherein the system controller is configured to, based on the priority statuses of the first and second samples, pause detection of the first optical signals prior to completion of the detection of the first sample and detect the second optical signals of the second sample.

4. The assay system of claim 2, wherein the system controller is configured to change the priority statuses of the first and second samples based upon a state of the first and second sample.

5. The assay system of claim 2, wherein the system controller is configured to lower the priority status of the first sample or the second sample after detecting the corresponding optical signals.

6. The assay system of claim 2, wherein the priority status of at least one of the first sample or the second sample is automatically determined by the system controller.

7. The assay system of claim 2, wherein the system controller is configured to receive user inputs provided by a user to establish the priority status of at least one of the first sample or the second sample.

8. The assay system of claim 2, wherein changing the optical assembly to the first collective arrangement or to the second collective arrangement includes removing one of the optical components of the optical assembly.

9. The assay system of claim 2, wherein the first collective arrangement causes the first optical signals to propagate along an optical path that is different than an optical path propagated by the second optical signals when the optical assembly has the second collective arrangement.

10. The assay system of claim 2, wherein the first optical signals are directed to a first detector and the second optical signals are directed to a second detector.

11. The assay system of claim 2, further comprising the first and second samples, the first and second samples being the same type of sample.

12. The assay system of claim 2, further comprising the first and second samples, the first and second samples being different types of samples.

13. The assay system of claim 2, further comprising an excitation light source assembly configured to illuminate at least one of the first and second samples.

14. The assay system of claim 2, wherein the optical assembly includes an objective lens having a collecting end that receives the first and second optical signals from the first and second samples, respectively, and wherein a working distance between the collecting end and the first and second samples is less than 5000 microns.

15. The assay system of claim 2, wherein the at least one optical component that is selectively moved by the optics adjustment system includes at least one of a path compensator, an afocal compensator, or an optical wedge.

16. The assay system of claim 2, further comprising a sample stage that includes first and second sample interfaces configured to hold the first and second samples, respectively.

17. A method of operating an assay system, the method comprising:

providing first and second samples to the assay system, the assay system including an optical assembly having a plurality of optical components and an optics adjustment system configured to selectively move at least one of the optical components to change the optical assembly between a first collective arrangement for detecting the optical signals from the first sample and a different second collective arrangement for detecting the optical signals from the second sample; and

identifying a priority status of the first and second samples;

automatically determining whether the first sample or the second sample has a higher priority based on the priority statuses;

changing the optical assembly to the first collective arrangement or to the second collective arrangement based on which of the first sample or the second sample has the higher priority; and

detecting the optical signals of the sample that was determined to have the higher priority.

18. The method of claim 17, wherein identifying the priority status of the first and second samples includes receiving user inputs from a user of the assay system or automatically determining the priority status using a system controller of the assay system.

19. The method of claim 17, wherein the assay system is configured to, based on the priority statuses of the first and second samples, pause detection of the first optical signals prior to completion of the detection of the first sample and detect the second optical signals of the second sample.

20. The method of claim 17, further comprising changing the priority statuses of the first and second samples based upon a state of the first and second sample.

21. The method of claim 17, further comprising lowering the priority status of the first sample or the second sample after detecting the corresponding optical signals.
