Abstract

A mobile wireless communications device may include a portable housing that may include an electrically conductive continuous ring defining a perimeter of the portable housing. The electrically conductive continuous ring may be configured to function as an antenna. The mobile wireless communications device may further include a printed circuit board (PCB) carried by the portable housing and may include an electrically conductive layer defining a ground plane. The mobile wireless communications device may further include wireless transceiver circuitry carried by the PCB and coupled to the antenna. The mobile wireless communications device may also include an electrically conductive shorting member coupled between the electrically conductive continuous ring and the ground plane.

24. An electronic device comprising:

a housing comprising an electrically conductive continuous ring antenna at a perimeter thereof;

a printed circuit board (PCB) carried by said housing and comprising a ground plane;

wireless circuitry carried by said PCB and coupled to said electrically conductive continuous ring antenna;

at least one first body mechanically and electrically coupled between said electrically conductive continuous ring antenna and said ground plane; and

at least one second body mechanically coupled between said electrically conductive continuous ring antenna and said PCB but electrically insulated therefrom.

25. The electronic device according to claim 24, wherein said at least one first body comprises a plurality thereof.

26. The electronic device according to claim 25, wherein said plurality of first bodies are spaced apart.

27. The electronic device according to claim 24, wherein said at least one second body comprises a plurality thereof.

28. The electronic device according to claim 27, wherein said plurality of second bodies are spaced apart.

29. The electronic device according to claim 24, wherein said electrically conductive continuous ring antenna comprises metal.

30. The electronic device according to claim 24, wherein said PCB and said electrically conductive continuous ring antenna are spaced apart to define an air gap therebetween.

31. The electronic device according to claim 24, further comprising a dielectric material between said PCB and said electrically conductive continuous ring antenna.

32. The electronic device according to claim 24, wherein said wireless circuitry is configured to operate at a frequency within a range of 800 MHz to 3.25 GHz.

33. An electronic device comprising:

a housing comprising an electrically conductive continuous ring antenna at a perimeter thereof;

a printed circuit board (PCB) carried by said housing and comprising a ground plane;

wireless circuitry carried by said PCB and coupled to said electrically conductive continuous ring antenna;

a plurality of first bodies mechanically and electrically coupled between said electrically conductive continuous ring antenna and said ground plane; and

a plurality of second bodies mechanically coupled between said electrically conductive continuous ring antenna and said PCB but electrically insulated therefrom.

34. The electronic device according to claim 33, wherein said plurality of first bodies are spaced apart.

35. The electronic device according to claim 33, wherein said plurality of second bodies are spaced apart.

36. The electronic device according to claim 33, wherein said electrically conductive continuous ring antenna comprises metal.

37. The electronic device according to claim 33, wherein said PCB and said electrically conductive continuous ring antenna are spaced apart to define an air gap therebetween.

38. The electronic device according to claim 33, further comprising a dielectric material between said PCB and said electrically conductive continuous ring antenna.

39. The electronic device according to claim 33, wherein said wireless circuitry is configured to operate at a frequency within a range of 800 MHz to 3.25 GHz.

40. A method for making an electronic device comprising:

forming a housing to have an electrically conductive continuous ring antenna at a perimeter thereof and carrying a printed circuit board (PCB) comprising a ground plane and wireless circuitry coupled to the electrically conductive continuous ring antenna;

mechanically and electrically coupling at least one first body between the electrically conductive continuous ring antenna and the ground plane; and

mechanically coupling at least one second body between the electrically conductive continuous ring antenna and the PCB but electrically insulated therefrom.

41. The method according to claim 40, wherein the at least one first body comprises a plurality thereof.

42. The method according to claim 41, wherein the plurality of first bodies are spaced apart.

43. The method according to claim 40, wherein the at least one second body comprises a plurality thereof.

44. The method according to claim 43, wherein the plurality of second bodies are spaced apart.

45. The method according to claim 40, wherein the electrically conductive continuous ring antenna comprises metal.

46. The method according to claim 40, further comprising relatively positioning the PCB and the electrically conductive continuous ring antenna to be spaced apart to define an air gap therebetween.

47. The method according to claim 40, further comprising positioning a dielectric material between the PCB and the electrically conductive continuous ring antenna.

48. The method according to claim 40, wherein the wireless circuitry is configured to operate at a frequency within a range of 800 MHz to 3.25 GHz.
